10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Quote from: InfraMan on 04/14/2014, 10:30 PMThe newness factor always helps when you first get into collecting for a different system. I find that I have temporary tunnel vision when it comes to retro gaming... when I first get into a new system, I'll collect for it almost exclusively for a month or two. After that, I'll get back into a regular groove of jumping from system to system.

There are certain ones I go back to more than others, though. I really have a soft spot for the early-to-mid 90s CD-based consoles for some reason... it's interesting to see how developers were trying to figure out what to do with this new format. Plus, I really love the semi-sort-of animated cutscenes that were so popular at the time. For that reason, I don't think I'll ever get tired of the Duo (or its slightly "special" cousin, the Sega CD).
I feel very similar.

What really drew me in additionally is the feel of the controller.  Man I just really like the way it feels, better than any other retro console I own (30 + consoles and I own every major console from NES on).

The games feel fresh and new to me,because I never played them as a child and I really enjoy some of the silliness that some of the Japanese games show.  I have never been into imports until this system.

Can you even "beat" sim earth?

And Mr Wunder:  if you pay anywhere near $85 for the duo Ys disc, please dont come back here. Its for you own protection.
I wasn't planning on it, don't worry.  This isn't my first rodeo.

I sent you a pm about ys1 and 2.

Quote from: guest on 04/09/2014, 10:56 PMYep hold both, bullets will fly out of your chest cannon, you can even adjust the direction of the bullets with the directional buttons while firing. Do not underestimate it as it is quite powerful when you upgrade it to 3+.
Oh ok that makes sense. I was just tapping them.

This is the part I could not beat.  I cannot for the life of me figure out how to kill those little sleds!  I just end up taking a pounding from them until they take off.

I really enjoy the controls except for the fact that you cannot turn around unless you are firmly on the ground.  That has screwed me up a couple times.

@esteban  Powering up vernier is awesome.

Ps. how do you use your chest cannon?

Bah, throw that shit in the trash.
Haha Never!

I will def. admit the tg16 is far better than the snes and genesis for many reasons. I just never had a tg16 and did have Nintendo products and have a nostalgic attatchment. Plus I really enjoy the homebrew community nes still has.

I was looking for tg16 homebrews and hacks, are they common?

Quote from: guest on 04/07/2014, 03:42 AMThat's what I did along with Gradius II to get an initial taste of the PCE, before spending money on the actual hardware.
All i had to do to get hooked was feel the amazing controller and play shadow of the beast once.

Dat parallax scrolling!

I am trying really hard to dig up a copy right now. I am cool paying around 100$ too (yay tax return). All i hear is how great this game is and I cant wait.

Im 31, an Electrician from northern CA.

I have been a gamer my whole life, and just started collecting pce/tg16 with my purchase of a modded duo from keith courage on this site. I have also bought some games from 2 other members.

I also collect NES, SNES, genesis and more modern consoles as well.

I think they are derivatives of the original boxes.
Is that what yours are?  I tried the dragon spirit one and it didn't work for me.

I always wanted a tg16, but just never had enough money. Fast forward a lot of years, I got really into NES collecting, then retro in general. That brought me here.

I would contact him, his price was pretty reasonable. Or if you do wind up getting your hands on one you could always contact him for a region mod.
I am actually working on a deal with him right now (great guy BTW, he is very patient with all my noob questions)  Probably going to pick up some games too.

Great Idea!  I do that with my gameboy games.

I just need to figure out how to store loose hu cards........

PS.  If anyone has any loose hu cards they want to sell me in lots or whatever, shoot me a PM!  I need to buy more!

Are these going to be considered the best replacement storage option for hu card cases (aside from the sleeves?)

Quote from: Arjak on 03/26/2014, 02:42 PMWelcome to the club! :D

The Turbo truly is an amazing console, one of the most underrated ever, and considering the fact that you like shmups, I have a feeling that you'll love it. There are many excellent shooters for the system, many of them exclusive to it. Definitely look for the following:

-Blazing Lazers (HuCard)
-Gate of Thunder (Super CD)
-Lords of Thunder (Super CD)
-Star Soldier series (HuCard)

Those are just a few of the very best (that I've played). There are many others that will be worth your time. And, of course, there are many other different genres of games to play.

Still, I recommend you at least consider looking for a Japanese system. The PC Engine (as the Turbo was known over there) was much more popular there and will most likely be easier to find. They're also easy to get modded to play both American and Japanese HuCards (CD games are not region locked). If you're looking for an American Turbo Duo, you might be looking for a while, especially if you're looking for a good price.

Thanks for coming here! I hope your stay is long, yet pleasant.
Awesome advice! Thanks so much

Looking to buy NTSC-US  TG-16 Games (common and maybe not so common) in lots.  Yes even TV sports games.  They can be loose or CIC but I have some decent cash right now and I am looking to build up my library fast.  Please PM me or link me to your FS thread if you have any games for sale.

I am looking for PCengine hu and cd games too, but only if they are cheap- I want to focus on the North american games mostly.

I have already bought from keith courage (hope he can vouch for me as my payment is very fast) and I have bought some games off another member but I have not received them yet so I will not say his name.

Specific games I am looking for:

Splatterhouse
Ys 1 and 2

I use paypal.

Thanks- looking forward to getting some games!

Original post

Hey everyone,

I am a new member. I found this site VIA Nintendoage, from a member whose username here is Red Ghost (I guess he sponsored me).

I am looking to buy a Pcengine duo, to get into playing the games on this system (mainly shmups).

I will need a controller and cords, and I am not too concerned about it being modded (if it is, great!)

I have a 30 successful transactions on Nintendo age (same username) over 260 100% feedback on ebay, and I am a paypal verified member. If you would like to know anymore please message me.

I would like to see your references as well and hopefully pics too. I have paypal money ready and waiting to pick up one of these amazing consoles.

Thanks for reading.
