Quote from: Ayce on 09/22/2014, 09:59 PMMaybe someone can explained this whole "collectard" thing to me. If I'm not mistaken most of the users on this site are collecting video games, are they not? It's hard to play a game if you don't buy it. Sure you can go the route of using an Everdrive, but I have a feeling there are more collectors on the forums than there are who stick to the Everdrive.

I'm a gamer... I have been ever since my parents bought a VCS around 1980. Ever since then I have been not only playing games but collecting them. There have been occasions that I've sold off large portions of my collecting when in times of need, but then I eventually buy it back from another source. Sorry for my ignorance here, but I don't understand why people of this community are so harsh against collectors.
A collectard is anyone who pays more than what the game was sold for in 1995 in the bargain bin at Babbages.
Unless you are finding Turbo Grafx games for $2 CIB, I doubt it, so everyone is pretty much paying the going rate these days.
I think he was joking, lol.

I never got into Saturn, but I did pick one up about 10 years ago?  I think I got the system CIB with like 6 games or so.

Still have it in my basement, I actually think I have some rares titles too, which I got all for like $50.

I was tho a HUGE Dreamcast fan, to this day I have like 4 systems, 3 US and 1 JP, and I don't remember why I have so many.

Quote from: guest on 09/15/2014, 12:57 PMFact #1: the Turbob wasn't "impossible to find".  It was carried by Sears, Service Merchandise, Montgomery Ward, JC Penney, and Radio Shack, which were all nationwide.
The Sears and Radio Shack stores in my town did not carry the TG16.  Sears had the Genesis, SNES, Game Boy, even the Virtual Boy, but not the TG16.  Radio Shack had almost no console stuff.  Service Merchandise... there was one of those nearby, but I don't remember going there for videogames much; if they had anything, it was probably even less than Ames (another department store there was one of around here back then), and I doubt very much they had anything TG16.  If those chains carried the system in some places, it was far from nationwide.  The only place I ever remember seeing a TG16 was in the Toys R Us near the mall (~40+ minutes away, so we went there quite rarely).

QuoteFact #2: Mortal Kombat wouldn't have been a huge system seller, as few people would've been willing to pay $200 to play MK ($90 for the system, $50 for the game, $20 for a Tap, and $40 for a pair of 6-button controllers).  That's mighty steep to get a game that wouldn't have been exclusive for any length of time, 90 days tops.
Yeah, the length of exclusivity would be pretty important.  I do agree on that point.
Black Falcon,

What state were you in during that time? I had no trouble seeing TG-16 stuff, without even having to look for it.
I don't remember seeing many where I live in Columbus, Ohio.  They did have em at Toys R Us but it was the only store I remember.

BUT we did have Incredible Universe which still is the greatest electronic store ever.

Quote from: guest on 09/15/2014, 03:11 PMI don't have an iAnything, so can you check a few titles and post the dates here?  I think the only titles we have solid dates for are Keith Courage and the WD games, so perhaps they're using the PCE release dates.
K.

Dragon Spirit: Jan 1 1989
Keith Courage: August 29th 1989
Splatterhouse: April 21 1990
YS III: Dec 31 1991
Dragon Slayer: Dec 31 1992

Quote from: guest on 09/15/2014, 01:47 PMIt has dates for TG-16 games?  Where'd they come up with those?
Yea,it has the dates, but I'm not sure if they're correct.
#7
There's an app called game vault that has the dates of released games.  I use it to see what I have, I'm not sure if they have all PCE and TG games, but all the games I've added they have had and the dates released.  It goes as far as dates for different regions.

Quote from: CGQuarterly on 09/14/2014, 06:37 PMI've listened to several of the episodes, and I want to like it a lot more than I do.  It sounds to me like the host  *REALLY* wishes that he was about 10 years older so that he would have lived through the stuff that he talks about.  The show needs someone older to sit in as a co-host.  As it is, they just sound like 20-something hipsters who try too hard to make themselves sound legit.  I remember the host, in an early episode, saying that he "totally remembers the SNES launch" because when he was FIVE YEARS OLD his mom took him to the mall where they had some set up.  Based on a lot of stuff that he's said both on the show, and on the Neo-Geo forums that he was frequenting before he was run off, it sounds like he just recently got into retrogaming and is just buying shit up on eBay as fast as he can.

I haven't listened in a long time, but in the early episodes there were three dudes.  The host I don't care much for, and then there's some snarky hipster dude that I also didn't like, but the third guy had a pretty thick southern twang to his voice.  That guy I liked a lot.  He should have his own show.

Bottom line: What makes these shows enjoyable for me are hosts with knowledge, experience, and a passion for old games.  That's what makes Game Sack so great.  They lived through that shit, and seemingly never quit playing the old stuff, while also getting into the new stuff.  So they have a vast knowledge that comes from years of experience.  You can't buy that on eBay.
Yea, I do find it funny that he's younger than me and I'm 30.  I mean you can still remember playing these games at a really young age, but like you said the Game sack guys where in their teen or early 20's during the era.

I mean you can't blame him for being young during that era and wanting to 'relive' it again as if he was a teen at that time and not 5.

Another good show is retronauts as all of them have or are in the game business for a long time.

I was lucky enough to have 2 small video game stores when I was young that imported Japanese games so I got to play some of them, but not many TG16.

It's your prototypical jrpg of that time. It's a fun game and challenging but the voice acting is so bad.

So I started playing DS and man it's a pretty tough game.  The battle system reminds me of Dragon quest, nothing flashy, but it's pretty unforgiving.  It's a pretty good game, but the voice overs are laughably bad, but the music is actually pretty damn good.

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 09/13/2014, 10:56 PMLCD has screen retention. After the screen ages, you'll begin to see what looks like a burned in image, especially high contrast stuff. It'll go away after a short while. There is no permanent damage. I notice this on my computer screen from 2004.
Thanks Joe.  That's good to know.

Yea, I'm playing Dragon slayer and it leaves stuck pixels all over, so I have to run a burn in fix on YT which works, but it really sucks how it's doing this.

I have an older LCD monitor I'm gonna try, maybe it's this one.

Hey ya guys.

So I got my Duo all set up running through my XRGB Mini via the regular composit, but after a couple hours of play I noticed significant screen burn in on my PC monitor.

I ran some youtube burn fix and that did the job, but now I'm worried firing it up again and it doing the same thing.

My monitor is a 1444p IPS monitor, it's only 2 years old.  I'm just wondering if there is anything I can do about it.

I don't know if the RGB mini its self or if there are any option i'm using that is causing this problem.
#22
Have any of you had burn in using the Mini?  I connected my Duo to it and used it on my PC but it left petty bad burn in,

I'm not too sure why since I've never had anything burn in.

What do you want me to do?

I get it I have not been collecting turbo stuff for over 20 years like a lot of you, but there is nothing I can do about that now, so asking if it's a good deal from people who know is helpful to me. I'm pretty damn frugal with my money, so spending a lot of money kills me.

I'm just trying to find good games and good deals so I can pop em in and enjoy.

Believe me, in the past month I've been going all around the city looking for TG16 stuff, from Flea markets, Thrift Stores, and Garbage sales.  I check Ebay and see what the price that are non BiN go for, so I do my homework when buying stuff before I shell out money.

Quote from: Azzurri on 09/10/2014, 09:25 AMPrices right now seem to be crazy high, and this is not just Turbografx stuff, but SNES, Sega Saturn, and other retro consoles.  Even the stuff that isn't 'rare' is double or even more than it was a couple years back.

Do you guys think the prices will eventually level out, once resellers move out and the gouging stops?  Or are we in for these prices for the foreseeable future?

Part of me thinks it's here to stay since these games are not getting any newer, and over the years people lose stuff or it breaks.

Anyways, what say you?
I don´t think prices will ever significantly drop in the future. TG and PCE are now vintage items, hence there is a price rise. Whether it is justified or not, prices will continue to rise and might rise into heights we probably now just have a mere imagination of.

And since we´re talking about vintage items, they will have a certain base price point that is dictated by their rarity, age and of course, availability to a certain market. If you live in Japan you will be happier than in the EU, since you pay less for items in general.

It is the same with classic cars. They never drop in price, they cost you money to drive them, they cost you money to stay in good shape (so does a game console, unless you can service it yourself), and they become more and more expensive due to less and less available original parts and of course generally models in running condition. There´s no way around it.

So I expect to rise certain games and items to become more and more expensive within the coming years. So I´d better start with the more rare items and purchase the less expensive ones later, since they are way more common and will stay common, hence become less expensive over a longer period of time.

Just my 2 cents. Anybody else perhaps with a different opinion?
I agree with you, just like you said the price for vintage cars just keep going up as the years pass by, and since none of these games are in production and haven't been for over 20 years now, I don't see prices really dropping, especially for rare titles.  The commons ones probably won't move all that much.
