10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Rather than keep clogging the N64 thread up with PSX memories

I made a thread.

Obvious games aside, there were some other sweet experiences.  hybrid heaven reminded me of two:

Broken Helix and Fade To Black.

F2B was a little doofy, but overall a pretty nice transition from 2d to 3d for that game.  I wish we'd gotten more of that setting.

At least we got that remake a few years ago?

.. and it's on Dreamcast now?

how about TRAG.  Anyone else play that ?

Anyone have an interest in one?

no pics at the moment, but it is CIB with an RGB cable.  It works.   The floppy drive was fine last I tried it, but you may need/want to replace the belt.  It's a cheap task.

These things are apparently expensive now.   like, 1200$ expensive.   Loose ones gravitate around 1000 or so here, and 700$+ in Japan.

I am selling because I don't use it.  I prefer a different model, and this thing just sits there as a result.

If anyone has an actual interest in buying it though, PM me and I'll whip out the dick pics of the thing.

So really,  who the fuck came up with turning Wataru into Keith Courage?

Does anyone know, or have interviews/stories about it?

I just want to know what prompted them to turn a like 9 year old kid into a 45 year old with a mullet, wearing paintball armor.

They could have done so much better with the naming.

They could have just called it Alphaman, Alphaknight, or anything that sounded cool as fuck.

and then draw him in his full getup instead of a halfassed motocross suit with a toy lightsaber.

what the fuck.

I like the game alot, but what the fuck lol.  Its so stupid.

and why is he posing like Bender at the end of The Breakfast Club?
#4
I always personally liked this one more than the actual arcade one because of the music, and the graphical style being changed.

you basically look like Krillin now, except you're not a fucking lameass like Krillin.

The gameplay felt a little tighter, too, but that might just be because I only ever played it on a shitty arcade machine at a bowling alley that probably needed cleaned up.

As far as arcade conversioning goes, I thought they did a good job of consolizing it.  It makes me wonder why we never saw something like Black Tiger brought onto PCE

So, lets play a game.

Winner gets to go next.

You have to, using flailing onomatopoeia bullshit, put a song into your post.

and then we all have to try and guess what in the fuck it is you're doing.

I wonder how this is going to turn out, lol.

For sake of not being too idiotic (its already idiotic), at least name the platform the game is on, and maybe the genre, otherwise everyone's just going to start making baseball music noises.

Could you imagine if Rare had developed TurboGrafx-16 games?

They were already fist-fucking the NES with their talents.   Seeing Wizards and Warriors or something like Captain Skyhawk for Turbo would have been kind of awesome.

It might have also made the thing do better here.

Battletoads for Turbo?  Snake Rattle n Roll?

I wonder if they've ever said why they didn't bother.  It seems like something the would've been really good at taking advantage of, and putting out good shit for.

#7
The Namco thread that spawned the Taito thread spawned this thread.

Lets all talk about how awesome this game is.

It's one of those games that rarely gets talked about when shooters come up.

It's great for various reasons:
1) It's not in fucking outerspace
2) You're a helicopter
3) the mechanic where bombs dropping off you and blowing shit up if you get shot is sweet

Tiger Heli on NES was one of my favorite games.  Eventually, when I found this existed on PC Engine, I peed a little.  I was fortunate enough to get it in a stack of games that came with the Duo-R I got years ago.

The actual art in Kyuukyoku is nicer than the NES obviously, but I do kind of miss the ... plastic/glass looking forests and stuff in the NES one.

I think the PC Engine's version of the soundtrack was better than the arcade, too.  The percussion was better for sure, and I prefer the PCE's leads.

If you took the arcades bass, with the rest of the PCE one, that would probably sound pretty dope.

I'm going to punch thehaze or paul and make them mash it up into an acidtrip remix.

http://www.aetherbyte.com/aetherbyte-nantettatte_engine.html

https://aetherbyte.bandcamp.com/releases (MUSICCCCC)

In honor of the PC Engine's upcoming birthday, we present to you: Nantettatte Engine.

It's a few days early so you can play it on the weekend here instead of a random surprise on Monday when you're not paying attention or at work. ;)

IMG

It's a goofy, free little high score game in the same style as Astrosmash, and those early 90s bitwar/PC war games where you're shooting whichever machine you aren't fanboying over.

I remember playing one on Windows in the early 90s that was a Space Invaders clone that had you shooting Macintosh computers with X_X faces on them.

It always made me laugh, so I'm happy we could finally do the same thing here.  I hope this reminds everyone of simpler times.

The objective is simple.  Shoot everything.  If the Amiga Ball or Game and Watches hit the ground, you die immediately.   You can press I to move faster.

Also of note, I present to you Aetherbyte's new, long needed/overdue mascot, RomRom.

I had been milling over ideas for a real mascot instead of just having a frigging pillar logo for a long time now.  I always wanted something like Rolfee and could never quite pinpoint what I wanted.

The final idea for her and this game basically hit me all together the one day when I was riding a train in Japan.  It was strongly fueled and influenced by the record shop I was just at, and all of the candy I inhaled that day.

Her name's a play on Kyonkyon (Kyon2), arguably one of the most famous 80s JPop singers.  I brought her up in that one thread awhile back about the CD-ROMROM naming and all of that Japanese word math, and I chuckled to myself and went  'heheheeee', and that's basically how she got her name.  It seemed like a comical perfect fit.

RomRom is essentially a combination of all of the kickass things about the 80s with some of my personal tastes sprinkled in.

You can expect to see more of her on the site, maybe on some pins/stickers or something, and probably in some other upcoming stuff we're doing.

It was fun keeping this under wraps, telling people I wasn't doing any PCE stuff.  Sometimes, while I was literally working on it.   Paul had posted a small snippet of her black and white face on FB, but I don't know that anyone suspected a thing.

Also,

We can't in good conscious release this on a physical card for money for various reasons, including the fact that I covered KyonKyon's Nantettatte Idol for this.... so just play it in an emulator or use a flashcart.

CHRISTMAS IN OCTOBER:
^^^ This is the song, that's Kyonkyon.  Hell yeah.

I'll ship anywhere with USPS.  You get to pay shipping.   Since this is PCEFX, I'd prefer the friend/gift thing instead of getting wanged by fees.

We don't have a "nesdev.com" , or any centralized source of information.

We have the mostly defunct Archaic Pixels, info floating around ChrlyMac's site, and stuff on Tom, or Magic Engine's places.

since I highly doubt anyone wants to maintain a site+wiki, I fired up a Wikia.

http://pcedev.wikia.com/?wiki-welcome=1

Should we use this instead, and centralize crap?  Enterprising individuals with copious amounts of free time could sit and migrate stuff, or add new stuff.   Maybe centralizing crap would be a good idea.

Assuming people like the idea, should we basically mimic the categories of NesDev?

on the topic of mirroring documents, does anyone have a place they can do that from?

I can make a new dropbox as one point of linkage.

I think this would work better than relying on one of us to maintain a site.   I can't even find time (or motivation) to finish PCFXTOO because it turns out doing webpage stuff is kind of tedious and boring.

Everyone else is busy or gets sidetracked easily...

so this takes most of the effort away.

What do we think?

EDIT: Also, assuming this is good to go, we should migrate the forum topics here where we can, because these stickied threads are only visible to registered members.   Not everyone does that.

Facebook is basically a fucking cesspool of fuckboy collectards.  They're ruining everything.

It was funny at first to watch them talk of their asses, but, they seem to have run unchecked for far too long.

Why?

A good majority of us that are into/good at keeping their bullshit in line don't use Facebook.   They don't come to forums because they're too stupid for that, and it has no "like" system or easy way to post photos, so they can't get their retarded ego-masturbation.

I think we need to fix that.  Even if it's just to make accounts specifically to join and lay waste to idiots in the Turbo groups.

They're damaging the scene.  While I don't particularly care if they fuck up the SNES/MD/etc. regions of life, I hate seeing what they are doing to the PCE scene.

We've lost people either due to literally losing them (dead), or they just said "fuck this" and bailed.

now we have...

prices going full tits
people parading around profiteering off of bootlegging
people parading around making fun of the actual community members who do work
people talking out of their asses

It's all a shitshow.  What happened.  Who are these fuckups?   They shouldn't be allowed to fuck everything up.

They think they're the PCE scene now, all because they photograph their purchases and post pics of title screens like a bunch of cunts.

All this rambling about HuC/MML/Mod players has me wanting to ask some questions, as a survey.

So

1) What actually scares you about MML?
2) How is MML any scarier than trackers, which are just columns of bullshit that look like a bad session of VIM that happens to make sounds?
3) Are you aware that you can use any fancy-as-piss DAW to craft PCE songs, and then simply MIDI-->MML---> Run it through Squirrel (for example) to get it to play something on PCE?

I am just trying to sort out why people run to the hills or completely give up on it.   It get's such a bad rap for no reason, I think.   It's not isolated to these scene.   There are people everywhere who go OMFG MML JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, NO.   GIVE ME TRACKER.

Also, perks to using MML for PC Engine:

1) If you did everything in a DAW, you accidentally made a CD soundtrack too probably
2) If you're using Squirrel, you get the magic of sound effects.  See: Atlantean.   It's got chiptunes and SFX.
3) It's super usable for creating a game.

This is my workflow for creating music for PCE and MSX:

1) I open up FruityLoops
2) I use the mouse cursor to pet the cute girl that is my wallpaper in FruityLoops
3) If PCE, I make a 6 channel song.  If MSX, I make a 9 channel song.
4) If PCE, I use Chip32 to approximate instruments.  If MSX, I use an MSX PSG VST, and an OPL2 FM VST.
5) I make the songs with MIDI controllers/piano roll editing.
6) Ok cool, it's done.  I hit the "midi" button and export a MIDI
7) import midi into 3MLE.  Every channel is conveniently converted to MML
8) If the songs are long, I use 3MLE's optimize button to shrink em up.
9) Paste into Squirrel file, or Musica file for PCE and MSX respectively.
10) Hit a button or two.  Done.

I made YouTubes about this before.   It's stupidly simple.
https://youtu.be/XeZTqqN0FtM
https://youtu.be/yy9gNPfTmgU

I really want to basically dispel all these myths about MML, and get you goons to use it and get somewhere with tunes.

General Gaming / Inferno for MSX2
10/05/2016, 05:52 AM
So, I've been working on this MSX2 game called Inferno on and off for a few years between Atlanteaning and such:
http://www.aetherbyte.com/aetherbyte-inferno_for_msx.html

Inferno.jpg
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1180821755323526

It's not PCE, and it's not coming to PCE, but I figure people here may be interested anyways.

It's getting fairly close to being done, and is currently being playtested.

You'd need

A) an emulator
or
B) An MSX2 with FM, or MSX2+

to play.

For anyone curious why it's not coming to PCE:

1) The sprites are all >32 pixels wide, and most are >32 pixels tall, and would ALL need redone.  It would be a bit of a nightmare, on top of Inferno being 16 colors total, so it would all need reshaded.
2) MSX is a good time.  Hudson got some of their starts there, and Mr. HueyCard's starts are on MSX, so you should like it too
3) I don't really feel like it. :)  Saber Rider (once it gets rolling), and fresh topics will be more fun than porting a game you guys could play already anyways.

I might be needing a few more playtesters, if anyone is interested.

Buy/Sell/Trade / THREE Atlanteans for sale
07/24/2016, 08:41 PM
I have three white plastic'd PC Engine version Atlanteans available with the old design (long board.  See thread in Turbo sales for new version, or go to our Facebook/twitter).

They're 60$ as usual.   They look like everyone is used to seeing, but the plastic and case are all white.

If more than 3 of you message, I will randomize and go with the top 3.

More PC Atlanteans are coming soon.  We're waiting on some new manuals since we ran out of them.

Buy/Sell/Trade / Fresh Atlanteans for Sale

Announcing it here first.

This sale only applies if

1) You don't have a copy yet
2) I like you

There are TWELVE (12) brand new TurboGrafx-16 version Atlanteans for sale

There will be some PC Engine versions coming soon.  I need more manuals printed before I can rifle those cunts out.

Atlantean.jpg

Note: It's a NEW design.  One plastic piece, half height board.

If more than 12 people contact me here about it, I am not doing first come first serve.  I'm entering everyone into a randomizer and that's how the top 12 will get chosen.

I don't think it'd be fair if someone misses it because they're sick, asleep, at work, vacation, or something.

More USA versions will be coming too, once we get the manuals (and more ROM chips for those).

The new setup costs 70$ instead of 60$.    Boards/chips/printing prices have increased a bit since we started this, unfortunately.

ALSO:  Blue cards don't exist for the time being, because we apparently bought all of the stock of good blue plastic.  Some of the other blues print like total shit.  If more blue comes back in stock, that will be a thing again.

Hurrayyyyy.

I am going to be changing the PCFXTOO's name.

Because I registered the domain as pcfxtoo.com already, I need a name that still fits this acronym.

Also, I intend to begin work on the site more once Inferno wraps up.    I might piddle out some pages when I am bored in the meantime.

I really hate site editing.

Anyway:  Anyone got any ideas for a name?

You should go spend the 19.99$ required to get it.

It's probably the best reboot of any of the ones that have come out.

They didn't abuse quicktimes (the quicktime event in it actually has a purpose and is basically like playing Parappa The Rapper while punching the fuck out of stuff).

The atmosphere is intact.

They have the old game on there.  and soundtrack.

It's replayable as fuck.

Toshiba HX-21 + BASIC books: 125$ + shipping
Metal Gear 1 MSX: 110$ + shipping

The Toshiba is an MSX1.  It's rarer and does RGB out.  It's one of the few MSX1s to do this.   I cleaned it up and fixed the cartridge door because it was all not-attached, but it's a spare one, so I don't need it.

Metal Gear 1 is loose, and the label has a little goony spot in the corner.

NOTE:  Metal Gear 1 is an MSX2 game.   It won't work on this Toshiba.   This Toshiba is great for:

1) Playing MSX1 games in RGB
2) Playing MSX1 games in composite
3) Looking awesome
4) Experiencing MSX1 with one of the most high quality MSX1 models that was produced.
5) It has stereo audio out, which is also not common.  Aw. Yeah.

I have the INTV2 (nameplate fell off.  Needs glue.)
The system changer
the computer addon
the voice thing

a ton of games, which includes the expensive baseball game for the computer.

Was hoping for like 300$ (based off my last checks of INTV2 prices, and gauging eBay completed listings plus local game store prices).

Seems like a fair price given the condition some of my stuff is in (The stupid baseball game is like 130$ if it's nice.  Mine just has a tardy box, etc.)

INTV2 turns on, but power button wont turn it off.   The switch was being goony last time I tried using it which was like 4 years ago.

I honestly forgot I had the thing.

I have this thing.  It's a Doujindance'd boxed Duo-R.   So, it's RGB modded, had the ports rediddled, and all of that shit.

I am debating getting rid of it because I have a CIB RGB modded Beefcase that has recently been resexed-up by BlueBMW.

Since I can cram my RAU-30 into that and also use the SuperGrafx...  I am not really seeing a need to keep both around.  I have an Arcade Card Pro anyways.   So, I'd rather keep the most effective setup, even if it looks the most defective.

So, what's the current going rate on something like this?

I wouldn't mind getting rid of it to make room for more crap that adds new functionality to my life.

The power brick died so it's missing that.   I can include it, but it sure don't work (I've been using a RadioShack one with it).

#42
Hey.  Looking for a non-shitty Duo-R or RX, preferably RGB modded and/or region modded.

1) Earthbound SNES loose.  Slight nick on label, pretty much great otherwise.  150$.   Still bafflingly idiotic for a price, but less than eBay.

2) Pier Solar SuperLameAssReprintEdition 95$. I opened it, laughed at them, and put it on a shelf.  I thought I sold it already but just spotted it on my shelf earlier today and went "oh.  no. get that out of here."

3) TG16+CD.  Region Modded.  Beemer fixed the CD drive.  Has case.  Case has no clips, as usual.   No controller.   Comes with System Card 3.0 (JP region!  SAVE THEM MONEY) 300$ (possibly gone).

4) Chrono Trigger SFC loose: 10$

5) Secret of Mana SFC loose, janked up cartridge (clips broke.  Tape holding together).  3$.  Free with any other purchase if you want it.

6) RAU-30 loose. 20$

7) Can Can Bunny PC-FX 30$

I'll add pics later today.

The recent Game Sack video discussions, and me revisiting my semi-half-baked PC-FX page that I've yet to finish has got me thinking.

If we're going to spread the word and encourage more people to possibly *try* the system, what sort of approach do we think needs to be taken?

I was planning on brief commentary (that ends up being enthusiastically biased half the time) for PCFXTOO, but maybe at this point, that is not what is needed for the game library, since brief commentary on the games already exists and has sort of been done to death.

I don't intend to change the layout, because it's pink/purple/pretty, but do you think the "comments" section might be better suited to full in depth reviews only, as opposed to brief paragraphs in most cases?

The original idea was just to become a centralized location for brief overviews of the games, with boxart/screens/maybe videos, but, maybe it needs to be something cooler.

We're going to cease taking orders for this beast on 12/24.

Why?

Well it's something like:

1) It lets us wrap up all of the orders and have an idea of what kind of supplies we need.  This is important because:

2) It gives us more time to continue focusing on the next board + plastic idea.  We don't want to have a ton of extra crap from this design laying around doing nothing.

3) It gives us even more time to WRITE SOME FRIGGIN' GAMES.   Really, this is the most important part.

If there's some sort of crazed demand for more, maybe in the future we can make more, but I would not count on it until the new and improved board + plastic is done.

So, place an order if you haven't.

You don't pay til yours is ready to ship, so, you've got plenty of time on the money front.    I invoice you once yours is ready.   It's a bit of a slow going process since I'm doing all of that during my free time between working on games, and working at a real place.

There is a decent sized waiting list (still somewhere around 100 orders left to go).

this is where everyone panics.

I keep finding dumb shit I don't remember having that I don't use.  Someone else can use it.

It's a Commodore 64C CIB.

It's the one with the 6581 SID chip in it, which is rare, awesome and sought after because it doesn't sound like shit like the 8580.

I also have a 1571 drive, boxed.   You can partake of this too since you'll need it to play all the excellent games.

I'll take pictures later once I sort it all out better.  There's a metric dickton of cables too.  Aw yeah.

I'm thinking (price wise):

64C: 100$
1571: 50$  (Needs whitened.  Thankfully, it's square so it's easy.  It's boxed!)
1351 mouse: 30$

This thing is basically the best Commodore 64 you can end up with, which to me, isn't saying much because they're all retarded.

I'll throw in some floppies, and I might have some spare cartridge games.

If you buy this hot mess together, I will take 150$ + shipping.  You're essentially getting the mouse for free.

this stuff is tested/worked last I messed with it.   I just kind of have no interest in C64 stuff sitting in boxes.

----------------------------------
ALSO AVAILABLE FOR C64, IF YOU'RE ACTUALLY INTO THIS CRAP:

Ultima IV boxed, no Ankh: 45$
Parallax EA album box version: 30$
Neuromancer EA album version: 100$
Wasteland EA album version: 70$

Buy/Sell/Trade / SHIT I BE SELLIN
09/14/2014, 08:37 PM
Attention, penis grapplers:

I have some games for sale.

It's always a great feeling when you go HEY, I WANNA PLAY ALSHARK

and find two copies on the shelf.

Anyway, here they are.

Keith Courage loose
China Warrior loose (I bet China Warrior's mom is loose after unleashing him onto the planet)

both for 5$ total. 5$ for China Warrior. I'm mailing you Keith Courage even if you don't want it.

Alshark PCE Super CD ROM ROM ROM----15$
Macross Eternal Boredom Song PCE Super CD ROM ROM---15$
Lady Phantom PCE Super CD ROM ROM ROrrom----5$
Super Schwarzeneggarchild PCE super CD Romrlrmrlhn---5$
Gain Ground SeX PCE Super CD romrgr---35$ (Why do the projectiles move at the speed of ass)
Motoroader Run DMC SCD---25$

All work and are tested. They're all in VG to NM shape. The manuals have your usual goofy wrinkles from sliding them in/out. You may want to wipe the discs down. Most of this crap was never touched by me because I accidentally'd two copies.

Motoroader MC has a label on the spine that I am too lazy to take off.

GG SX has a spine card. Oh boy.

FIRST OFF:

PROTOCARD FOLKS.   PLEASE PAY ME OR SOMETHING IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

I will hold your entitled copy, but if you leave me hanging for like 2-3 weeks, someone else is getting it and you can wait.

EVERYONE ELSE:
Pay attention Friday.   That's when I will give you information on the orders.

Everyone will e-mail me with the provided button thing on aetherbyte.com, and it will be first come, first served.   I will send PayPal invoices to the first lucky bitches.

I have like 40 available, split about evenly between regions.   They are almost all going to you guys, with a small bit going to other key supporters who don't post here but have been equally supportive of Aetherbyte since day 1.

If you miss the first go around, you will be first in line for the next batch that is in the works.

So, don't panic.   Bare with us.   Also, the shipping will be Priority, but may take a bit longer, because I am doing all of the packing/shipping myself after work.  This includes making the badass trinkets, and all of that.

Those who miss the first go around have the option to buy the ROM for 10$, and then you will only owe me 50$ + shipping when your turn in line comes for the card.

Said ROM will have some personal information wedged in it somewhere, so if you go uploading it to ROM sites, you'll be easily spotted by everyone, and they will hate you forever.   Don't be a RoyVegas and ruin life for everyone.

Speaking of RoyVegas:

Don't even bother.  You're not allowed to have Atlantean.

and last, but not least:

Remember, these are the first of their kind.   They're 3D printed.   They are not factory precision!

As such, there are slight oddities with the cases and cards.
Mainly:
-you may see some stray adhesive bits.
-The case trays are slightly larger than normal, so the back insert didn't quite clear the spine (should be addressed hopefully in the next batch, meaning we can figure out who has first prints! YEAH)
-The labels on the cards may not be 100% lined up.  They're applied by hand.  We're not machine perfect.   We're basically fidgety programmers running on caffeine.

These things will improve over time so future projects will be even better than this one.

OH. AND FINALLY:

I'm not all about the whole "second printing!!12" Super Watermelon Factory bullshit.

The second batch will have lighter blue than the first print.

This was basically because I said "hey look at this shade of blue that wasn't available before!" when I went to buy more plastic filament.

This does not mean the different colors of blue, or different cuts of the manual, or any of that have any bearing on the actual value of the game package because of different print runs.

Anyone who thinks otherwise, stop being dumb.

Each and every copy is worth exactly 4902230235832598$.

The only thing of any collectible spastic value is the almighty trinket I hand made with a Christmas present I got in like 1995:

It's the best of the 1990s.   New HuCard.   New Pogs.

I am making those things by hand.   The adhesive on the blank Pogs is completely shot.   I have to reapply adhesive (but this means I can make them double sided instead of having the goofy yellow backs!).

They weren't kidding when they said use that shit in a well ventilated room.

They're hand made.   They're not totally perfect.   However, they're awesome.
