The artwork and mechanics are nice but there really is little to no challenge.
If you use the blue ship with the laser then it's really pretty easy as soon as you get some power-ups. However, I found it quite challenging with any of the other ships, especially the green one with this phallus-like sword sticking out of the front which is probably one of the worst weapons ever (no obeying here).
I actually might replay it with that one, I haven't seen his weapon fully powered up yet. The last boss though didn't even shoot me once. It's just too weird. When it's on manual too you can just save your transformation for the bosses, might be a bit more challenging if it's set to automatic.l
If you set the transformation to automatic, you morph whenever your lifebar decreases to the danger level. Since that almost never happens except for the boss battles (at least for me), it's basically the same as playing with manual transformation and saving them for the bosses.

As a side note, AV Tanjou is now in the list.

The site has moved to a different host and is now up and running again (hopefully more stable than before :-&). You might still see the old graveyard site, as it takes some time for the DNS entry to get updated. I apologize for the inconvenience [-o<

I contributed to both the English and the Japanese version of the PCE page, but everything was re-edited or deleted. This made me add "Hardware section" to the list of things to implement for PCEDaisakusen II.

I can only think of three possible reasons:

1.) DNS problem: pcedaisakusen.net is resolved to the wrong IP (the correct one is 85.25.62.71). You can check that by using the nslookup command.

2.) Filter problem: Somebody blocks the site (provider, company firewall, etc.). You can try using a proxy server to circumvent that.

3.) Obey problem: There's an automatic obeyness check with every request sent to the page. If you fail it, no content will be delivered. You should obey more to be sure to pass this test.

$20 seems too low to me, I think you have to spend at least $30, since the game is not very common and also not that cheap in Japan either.

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 09/11/2009, 04:28 AMThe problem with the Wiki article is that is says SYN was formed in 1998, well after Gate of Thunder's 1992 copyright.
Agreed, the Wiki article is very misleading and I was confused by the timeline as well. At first I thought Tats made a bad hoax :-"
But actually, they only mention the date the Entertainment division of SYN was set up, which was indeed in 1998, but not a single word about when the main company was formed, which had to be around 1991.

Besides Gate of Thunder, Nick Wood is also responsible for the terrific BGM of Dynastic Hero! =D>

I voted for Kung Fu because the only good thing about it is the sprite size. I rather get eye cancer from the Shanghai board than playing this fark game!

This happens every once in a while, usually the mail gets into the spam folder or the mail server blocks it completely. Actually, my email is mentioned in the About section, but I guess it's easily overlooked. However, if you send me your username, I can activate your account manually. The email address is elnino@pcedaisakusen.net. I'm sorry for the inconvenience and see you soon! :)

I gave it a 9 since I can't vote for 8.5. It's not as excellent as Soldier Blade but comes in second in the series. Thumbs up for the robot boss who shoots his arms at you, he's the man!!

Very late but I just ordered it as well :D

My first Duo had the same problem, the laser is moving but cannot really read the cd. I think I could have fixed it by replacing the laser module but since I couldn't find any of them for a reasonable price, I just bought myself a new Duo.

Haha, I remember clearing this as well. It has only four levels if I remember correctly. I almost wet myself when I saw the CRAB for the first time!! Be aware of the fact that the repetitive music can drive you nuts within a couple of minutes!

Off-Topic / pcedaisakusen.net update!
08/04/2008, 08:01 AM
I'm currently working on a new release of the framework the daisakusen page is based upon. This took me quite some time as about 75% of the code has been completely rewritten. However, the new release is in the pipeline and I'm about to start planning the daisakusen update. Below is a list of things I want to include or improve.

  • Adding missing games to the database (mostly promos, demos, prototypes)
  • Adding a section for PC-FX games (I'm not sure yet how to integrate this part into the rest of the page, suggestions are welcome)
  • Redoing filter/countdown feature: I'm thinking about giving a pool of filters/countdowns to choose from in the profile page so everybody can customize his search/collection page (e.g. shoot'em ups, RPGs, mahjong games, Hudson vols, etc.).
  • Collection options will depend on the actual game (e.g. atm it's not possible to mark the spinecard checkbox of a hucard game which came in a big case)
  • All system cards and other unclearable stuff will be removed from the clearing countdown
  • Gallery/game room feature for users to share pics of their game environment
  • Adding more profile options (avatar, multiple templates to choose from, ...)
  • Collection compare feature (games you have which the other don't and vice versa)
  • Advanced search feature
  • More statistics
  • Full redesign
  • Translate the Japanese parts which are still in English (help  [-o< )
  • Adding more information about games

About adding more game information: Since I can hardly find any time to add missing genres or stuff like that, I've recently been thinking about a link on each game page which leads the user into a contribution mode where he can add/revise missing information about the game. The infos would be checked before added to the DB. However, I don't know if people would use this, therefore I'll be waiting and make my decision later based on the number of positive/negative comments I've received about this.

If somebody has another feature request or a suggestion about a point listed above, please let me know and I will see what I can do :)

Quote from: Lochlan on 08/02/2008, 10:49 PMI just picked up Bomberman '94 Taikenban for next to nothing.  I tried looking on ebay to see what it goes for but couldn't find anything for sale now or within the last 30 days.

Anybody have any ideas?  The case is a little scratched and there's no spine card, but the disc is MINT and the insert is near mint.
Taikenban stuff never comes with a spine. The actual value of the game is not high, I got my copy for less than $20 from Yahoo Auctions Japan where you can easily pick it up for that price. Because of its rare appearances on eBay I think you could fetch quite a ridiculously high sum, for some people will surely fall into the "boa I've never seen this one, it surely has to be rare and expensive!" trap.

The music is really great! I've just played it a few minutes but that was enough for me to get quite annoyed about the mecha bumping around like a freakin' idiot when you got hit!

no, only if the share of the shmups-part is more than half of the overall game (rule)
Never heard of this rule IMG
However, we have to think about adding them to the database, not as actual games of course but as some in-games related to Tokimeki.

How long do you have to play the uber interesting Tokimeki Memorial until you reach the 2nd / 3rd school tournament where you unlock these two hidden eggs?

Definitely Bazaaru de Gozaaru no Geemu de Gozaaru! I haven't played all of the other games but I can't imagine anyone of them to be better than O-Saru! I've been stuck in the last desert level for ages though.

2 adventures and 1 shooter with no connection to the other put together in a collection doesn't make much sense to me, seems like they just took all the games for the PCE which started with 銀河 / ginga / galaxy, rofl! But even then they forgot about the Galaxy Fraulein HuVideo "game".

I would've voted for the Simpsons if I had the choice but now my vote goes to Married With Children. Everybody in school was talking about Al Bundy at that time, it was great. Except for these two shows though I've never been a big sitcom viewer, e.g. I've never watched an episode of Seinfeld or Friends in my life! ()

04/22/2008, 07:27 AM
As of now, you can manage a wishlist to which you can add games you haven't already in your collection. You can add the games from the database list as well as from a specific game page. To access your wishlist, simply go to your collection and you will see a link on the top right. The same link is on your profile page as well. I will post some further information on the front page as soon as I'm through with the other updates I'm currently working on.

As usual, please drop me a line if something is not working the way it should.

You cannot view the games not in your collection on the site, the only way to get them is via the Export function. But being able to view your to buy games seems like a good idea and since it wouldn't cost me a lot of time, I think I will implement such a function. I let you know when it's done. Please refrain from creating multiple accounts, they will get deleted fo'sho!

Lmaomg, I've never paid attention to the pics on the anime4ever page, they really are the same as used in the auction, haha. Btw the poor fools have passed the 2k limit now.
#45
I always thought this game was to be released as a Super CD-ROM, however, I've just seen this auction:

http://page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f61765966

The type can be clearly seen as a CD-ROM and I'm kinda confused now. Maybe this guy has somehow managed to get his hands on a "real" copy. Even if it's a fake ass self-made copy, it seems hardly believable that someone would make such a basic mistake. This leaves us with the other possibility that I've just been foolishly assuming that it was a SCD, although everybody knew it was not. Given my Charles Xavier like brain power, this makes even less sense!!

Does anybody know something about this matter?

Quote from: TurboXray on 04/02/2008, 11:35 PMBeginners usually use "III" right off the bat, but in the end "I" is the best weapon in the game. That with the two pods kicks ass, though homing missiles makes for a good second.

Anyone have pics or video of the "secret" weapon you get from collecting nothing but orbs?
I prefer "IV" over any other weapon in the game, though it's quite weak until you've fully powered up. I haven't seen the secret weapon in action yet, maybe I'll give it a try. :)

Quote from: elninoIf you go down in the final stage you have no fucking chance to get back on track.
Every shooter I've ever finished from back then was a one credit clear. Even Gate of Thunder, which is probably my favorite shooter ever, has that problem where if you die once in the later levels you might as well just reset. Its a flaw for sure, but a flaw that effected virtually every shooter made up until the mid 90s.
I didn't mean that having a damn hard time coming back after losing a life is a bad thing in general and I wouldn't even consider this as a flaw. I like shmups which are hard and challenging a lot. The problem with Gunhed is the difficulty gap between the final stage and the rest of the levels. Every other shooter where you're doomed after you've died is basically challenging throughout the whole game. Gunhed, however, lets you sleep through the first few levels, requires maybe average skills in the mid-levels and then all of a sudden gets freaking difficult in the final stage. If the difficulty increased constantly I wouldn't have a problem with it but knowing that after reseting the game I won't be challenged until I get to the final level again is quite a frustration and makes me think twice if I should give it another try.
#49
The only criticism which comes to my mind is the unbalanced difficulty. The first few levels are way too easy and you manage to get on your feet after being destroyed in pretty much every situation in every level except the last one, which is about 634 times harder than all the rest put together. If you go down in the final stage you have no fucking chance to get back on track. The 14'000 lives you've saved up until this time won't help you either since you go down again before you can rebuild your weapon arsenal, therefore I usually reset the game as soon as I lose a life. I find this very frustrating because I don't have to use much skill until the final level.
