I dont think Jackie Chan gets talked enough. I love it on both the PCE and Famicom. One of my favorite games ever. Great graphics, music and gameplay. I love the pixelart. And nice use of parallax scrolling too!

Quote from: Sarge on 05/22/2018, 03:48 PMI like the SNES game, actually.  It's certainly not perfect, but then again, neither is Rondo.  I put them both in the 8.0-8.5 range; great games, but not my favorite of the series.  Of the classic games, I think I lean toward the NES original and Super Castlevania IV, even if the latter feels like a bit of a one-off.
Really, you would score them that close to each other? Richter on SNES feels like a broken man, compared to its PCE counter part. The PCE Richter is so smooth and fast in comparison. That alone gives the PCE game a big edge IMHO. Then you add the better level design, cd music and just more assets  and content all over the place... i cant help but give the PCE game at least a full point over the SNES game. At least...

Quote from: guest on 10/29/2017, 02:24 PMOf course. Purely from a graphics point of view I think you could get decent results although you'd be looking at some rather harsher contrast. Looking at sprite sheets, the colour count isn't greatly out of the PCE's reach. But it's a fun experiment.
Indeed it is fun, which is why I still plan on porting it someday to the Super Grafx Arcade CD-ROM2 System, because the world needs an "SGXACD"!   (Although I'm working on Mega Man X for straight PCE first as a learning experience.   )
I like the way you think... but at what point do you get to port the Arcade Contras to the PCE?

Yeah, but I think PC-FX would have had the best SF dating sim.

Imagine the Ken/Ryu sub arc.
THIS. THIS made me laugh.
LOL, that one was worth the thread, hehe.

And the technical post before that one was great too. So, way to go Arkhan.

Michirin9801, i read that they did something like that with the Sega Master System ports of Mortal Kombat. One of the characters was made out of sprites, while the other was part of the background layer or something like that. Would there be any disadvantage by rendering the characters with the background layers?.

I am reading that the prcessor King, has access to 1MB of RAM. If you could do what you say and use King to render the characters as background layers, you would have more memory for character animation, than the 256KB VRAM you get for the legacy background and sprite layers.
#7
Great points, i hadnt considered those situations were you have more than 2 characters on screen.

Quote from: guest on 09/28/2017, 03:54 PMThe SuperGrafx with the load space of the PC-FX could do an "arcade perfect" port of SFZ2, aside from color. But a PC-FX version could use PC-FX hardware for most or all of the background with authentic looking color and the sprites would look close enough using PCE/SGX graphics/color.

The PC-FX isn't a 2D powerhouse by PSX/Saturn standards, but is better than 3DO and 32X.
Really?, the SGX by itself could do that?!. Pretty impressive. You dont think the RAM configuration of the PCFX would be an issue at all, for a game like SFZ2?
#9
Thanks for the explanation gilbert.

I was daydreaming about the PCFX being a success and how some of the popular 32-bit era games would look on it. Before reading, have in mind i have no tech knowledge. So correct me on whatever (everything?), i get wrong.

I have read the PCFX being called a 2d powerhouse, but is it really compared to contemporary consoles? Before you keep reading, have in mind i have no tech knowledge. So correct me on whatever (everything?), i get wrong.

From what i have read, PCFX has the Supergrafx 2 background and 2 sprite layers (128 sprites?). Is that with improved colors? For this part of the graphics hardware, it has 256KB of VRAM. My guess is that it wouldn be enough for a port of, say Street Fighter Zero 2, comparable to the Playstation/Saturn versions. PS1 has 1MB of VRAM and, in terms of animation, fell a bit short from the arcade game. While the Saturn has 1.5 MB of VRAM and was noticeable closer to the arcade. Not to mention both have much superior sprite capabilities.

The PS1, can display a ton of sprites, from which it also has to build its background layers, since it has no dedicated hardware for them. The Saturn has great sprite capabilities thanks to its VDP1, although not as good as the PS1 (i read). But Saturn also has its VDP2 which is a monster background processor, and ultimately gives it a big edge for most 2d engines.

So we have the PCFX with its 2 background layers, 128 sprites and 256 KB of VRAM from its legacy Supergrafx hardware. But seeing how the Neo Geo ports turned out on PCE AC, with only 1 background and 1 sprite layer, i have the feeling that the bigger issue would be VRAM.

But PCFX also has a pretty powerfull processor called King(?), which is said to be a pretty powerfull background processor itself. How much RAM does this procesor have access to? Although a game like SFZ2 doesnt really need memory for the backgounds, but rather for the tons of frames of animation for each character.

Do you guys think King would be the key for comparable ports of 2d games from the other 32-bit systems? The likes of Rockman X4, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Darius Gaiden, Street Fighter Zero 3, Shienryu, etc.

I guess games with full screen scaling like Silhouette Mirage, Samurai Shodown 4, Soukyugurentai, etc are out of the question, since King might be able to do background scaling, but there would be no support for sprite scaling from the Supergrafx sprite layers.

Sorry, i might be over my head with this discussion, i dont really have much technical knowledge, only stuff i have read. I just  tought it would be interesting to hear and get corrected by people who actually know about the PCFX hardware. It usually doesnt get mentioned enough when comparing hardware.
#11
Tech question regarding those Arcade Card NG ports. So the AC adds 2MB of RAM to the PCE, but i think i read that its not a full 2MB bank of memory, but its segmented into smaller banks. So lets say, in Garou Densetsu Special, on any given match, how much RAM does the PCE have access too after loading the match.

Sorry if my wording isnt correct, not much of a tech head myself, and english isnt my first language.

Quote from: guest on 08/20/2017, 08:44 PMI couldn't find any stage or sprite rips from Samurai Showdown during a quick search, so I can't do a mockup, but the PCE is the perfect 16-bit console to do a good-for-consoles version of the game. The PCE can do pretty much any horizontal resolution between its minimum and maximum. So you could have the entire width of the stage visible at all times. It might mean that Earthquake doesn't make the cut, but it would still be a nice addition to fighting games for proper consoles.
Sounds pretty cool. Hope you can get those Samurai Shodown mockups done.

Quote from: saturndual32 on 08/12/2017, 01:20 AMWould love to have a King Of Fighters game on PCE, but the game has to load 6 characters for the matches, thats beyond the capabilities fo even the Arcade Card. Having long loading times between rounds would totally break the game. Maybe if they simplified it to 1 on 1 matches. Would still be pretty cool.

And would love to have seen Last Resort on the PCE. Would be a nice substitute to RType 2, which the PCE should also have received.

Samurai Spirits for sure, dont mind missing the zooming effect. The effect used on the Art of Fighting port would do fine.
1) You don't need six chara in RAM at a time with KOF unless it's 2003, which is the only one with full tag available. Load times *are* murder, but that didn't stop Playstations version of KOF from selling very well. Also, have you heard of Neo CD? It has KOF 94-99.

2) why even play Samshow without scaling? It loses all of its atmosphere. Just say Last Blade.
Yeah and load times, i am afraid, would be even worse on PCE AC than on PS1. And KOFs on Neo CD are almost unplayable, and that system has 7MB of RAM!, no comparison. I had a NeoCD, KOF looked and sounded great, but loading times totally crippled the games and other late generation titles. The Neo CD was fine for ports of early Neo games. PS1 and Neo CD ports of KOF were getting mediocre to bad reviews,

No zooming doesnt break Samurai Shodown for me, after all we arent expecting arcade perfect ports on PCE, as long as they play fine, its ok. Megadrive, Mega CD and SNES ports of it were mediocre, each for diferent reasons. A PCE version of the quality of FFS and WH2 would put them to shame. As for the 3DO port, unfortunately, the zooming seems to have killed its frame rate. Its so choppy.

And why would i mention The Last Blade?, first of all, it wasnt around when the PCE was still alive and kicking. Second, it also had zooming AFAIK. And the game is even more hardware intensive than Samurai Showdown.

Anyways, if we are counting games released after the PCE was relevant, then i dont care about the downgrades, i want Metal Slug on the PCE, it needs some run and gun action! Oh and Pulstar too. But i was only mentioning games that came out when PCE was sill supported (by KOF, i meant 94).

Hey, but to each their own, hehe.

really though, MG2 on PCE would've owned.  The soundtrack would've been about the same, but in stereo.

The PCE could have easily handled that game, too.   It might have actually been easier to write on the PCE vs. MSX.

But yeah, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake getting the PCE CD treatment... if only.

My top 10 would be:
Samurai Spirits
Super Street Fighter 2
Mortal Kombat
NBA Jam
Final Fight
Thunder Force 3/Spirits
Arcade Contra (any of them)
R Type 2
Metal Gear Solid 2
SD Snatcher

Quote from: CGQuarterly on 11/24/2015, 04:11 PMI don't think it got ugly.  I think you're being pretty reasonable in your attitude.  I personally don't like the whole "offers" thing because you aren't selling anything that is so rare that it's value is semi-unknown.  You can look on eBay or PriceCharting to at least get an idea of a starting price, or you can literally post the list of games here and ask us to tell you what a fair price would be for each.  When you yourself aren't sure the value of your stuff, "listening to offers" is a bad idea because you could be getting lowballed and not know it, which is why I doubt that most people like yourself ACTUALLY don't know what their stuff is worth.  You just don't want to list prices because maybe someone will offer you more than you would have asked.  For instance, if I had a spare loose Splatterhouse HuCard, I would probably price it at about $25.  But apparently by not pricing it, I could get $40...
I appreciate the advice. Thanks.

I sold Splatterhouse for 40 dollars, plus 5 dollars of shipping. Not exactly Ebay pricing. Dont know much about TG16 pricing, thats why i said i would take offers. I was offered 40 for Splatterhouse, and 60 for Neutopia 2, here on the forum. I charged 5 dollars for each games shipping. Are those prices too high?. Buyers seemed ok with it.
