12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

I have a new Pro Action Replay 3-in-1 coming from NCS, but I don't have any imports to play yet. I know the popular ones like DonPachi, Radiant Silvergun, etc. I want to know what you guys love from this under-loved system? Text heavy RPGs should be omitted. Thanks my friends. :)

Opethian

Batsugun
Blast Wind
Castlevania
Dungoens & Dragons collection
Silhouette Mirage
Battle Garegga
Crows Zero

Mathius

Cool! A few of those I have never heard of before like Crows Zero and Blast Wind. By Castlevania do you mean Nocturn in the Moonlight?

rag-time4

The first thing I would get is the Image Fight / X-Multiply 2-in-1 if I didn't already have it for Playstation. This disc features the arcade versions.

Nice! Is it expensive?

SignOfZeta

Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter (some of the best 2D ever)
Assault Suit Leynos 2
Galaxy Force 2
Astra Super Stars (this is, unfortunately, super expensive now)
Pocket Fighter
Waku Waku 7
The Gundam Gaiden games
The side scrolling Gundam games
Macross: Do You Remember Love?
Real Bout Special
The KOFs

Castlevania is better on PS, IMO.

Layer Section II, Elevator Action 2, KOF's, Realbouts, Castlevania and waku waku 7 are a MUST.

Other titles that are best bang for a few bucks:
All Japan Pro Featuring Virtua
Virtua Fighter Kids (If you like VF games)
Panzer Dragoon Zwie
Panzer Dragoon Azel (Saga)  ;)

What are some other hidden gems in the $10 or less category?

As others have said, Castlevania is better is the Playstation.

As for Saturn imports, I like:

X-Men vs Street Fighter
Street Fighter Zero Three
Soukyugurentai
Battle Garegga
Radiant Silvergun
Thunder Force 5

+lots more that I can't recall without looking at my collection.

TheClash603

I don't have this game, but it is the one Saturn import I desperately want and would be jealous of you if you had:

Final Fight Revenge

I love Final Fight and I love Sega Saturn, it seems like a natural fit.  I just don't wanna pay $150 for it, so I've held back.  If I ever find this game cheap, I will be a very happy man!

Opethian

Final Fight Revenge is a fighting game. It not very good (to capcom standards I think). I Dont know why its priced so high? Maybe low production numbers since it didnt sell very well?? heh

It was one of the last Saturn games, it also requires that infernal 4 meg cart that can be a challenge to get to work due to the Saturn's notoriously terrible cartridge slot.
--DragonmasterDan

Joe Redifer

As far as I know it was THE last official Saturn game released.  It was programmed in the US but released only in Japan.  It does run at a constant 60fps.  I have it on CD-R but that's it.

Ah yes, Vampire Savior.

I also greatly enjoyed Parodius Forever With You.  I have Silhouette Mirage and I don't really find much redeeming value in it, not that I am looking to sell it or anything.

Dude...wake up. Don't let high prices draw your attention to a game. FF Revenge is GARBAGE. The Saturn is one of the best fighting systems ever and FFR is tied for last place with a few others. Utter garbage.

I can't believe I forgot Vampire Savior. Its like $10 or something and utterly fantastic.

But yeah, the game is crap.  Here is some 60fps video at 240p (320x240) of me playing it on my Saturn.  You can see how the game is pretty much crap:

Windows Media - 16.1 MB

Quicktime - 16.6 MB

I doubt I'll be uploading these (or something longer) to Yout00b unless there is a complete dearth of FFR video there.

And the awesomely bad Final Fight Revenge. I thought it was an alright game, the humorous vibe the game gives is offsetting from other FF games.

The Saturn Lunar's aren't a bad pick except for the fact if you're in the US, there are nearly identical versions for Playstation that are in English. Except for Magic School, which isn't a great game to begin with.

The Saturn Symphony of the Night... well.. it's bad. Playing as Maria is cool but the extra areas were poorly designed tack on areas.

The last Saturn game was Yuukyuu Gensoukyoku Hozonban Perpetual Collection. Came out about 9 months after Final Fight Revenge.

Yeah, the end of the Saturn was like the end of the DC. Tons of galget garbage ported from Windows. Actually, it was worse since the DC got a bunch of shooters at the end too, and Puyo Puyo 4.

As for Castlevania, yeah. I'd put up with the Saturn version just for Maria if she wasn't so LAME. She's not much like the Rondo version.

The slowdown, the choppiness, there's a lot of other irritants with the Saturn version, it's just a sloppy sloppy port.

Agreed i have the saturn port as well.Though mostly for collection sake while it's fun to use maria it's realy a bad port. Now if konami, took the time and build the game from the ground up for the ss it could have been much better.

hahah I forgot about that...

for some reason I thought they were shown in negatives

Some other FFR stuff I found funny were
> Edi.E, actually saying "BANG!" when he fires his gun and his elegant display of police brutality by turning into a police car and running you over.
> Damnd poplocking winning pose. I wanna battle and serve him now!

Mathius

I have Layer Section already in its US form as Galactic Attack. Fantastic shooter I might add!

I might go with Sexy Parodius. I don't know. I can't make my mind up. :-k

Mathius

Just bought a stateside copy of Sexy Parodius!

Now all I need to worry about is my Saturn's cart slot is functional.  :-k Either way I am glad it's on its way. :)

I found my Sexy Parodius for 40 bucks in the wild many years ago....

So rare an occasion

Here's all you need to know about the Saturn version.

Igarashi (the producer of Symphony of the Night and many other CV games) was asked about the Saturn port right before Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles for PSP came out. When the interviewer mentioned it Igarashi asked "Have you played the Saturn port?" the interviewer replied "yes" at which point Igarashi said "I'm sorry".

What does Sexy Parodius have to do with the Saturn's cartridge slot?  No Konami game ever made use of extra RAM that I know of.

My Saturn is an North American version. It isn't modded so I am going to have to use an Action Replay 3-in-1 cart.

Joe Redifer

Oh yeah, mine has a region switch and I always forget about the people who don't.  Region switch is the way to go, though.  As a bonus, you get to drill a hole in your Saturn.  What could be better than defacing a classic game console?  Yeah yeah, I'm being facetious, but I do like the switch.

My goal is to play around with this Saturn for a while until I can afford to get a Japanese Victor Saturn. Then try to find someone around here who can drill as many holes in it as physics will allow, and...then have them mod it. :)

TheClash603

The slot on the Saturn sucks so bad.  The only thing that works in my slot is my official memory cartridge, my Gameshark no longer works, so now I can't play any of my imports.

...which is okay, because all the best games came out in the US anyway.  :)

I love how they look, and after watching a lukemorse1 vid where he demonstrates the system intro, I just had to have one! The US system intro is boring in comparison.

I know!  Sega did a great job making sure that US gamers got all of the best and only the best games.  Anything that was left in Japan wasn't very good. In fact it could be successfully argued that the US Saturn is far better than the Japanese Saturn based on the libraries alone.  They also did gamers right by enlarging the boxes when they brought over games because the tiny boxes the Japanese games came in were pathetic.  Sega knew that if games were released in boxes that size, people would probably lose them before they even got home.  With the large US boxes, there is no way to ever lose them because you can see them no matter what direction you are facing from anywhere on the planet.

The US cases can also be used as child seat boosters.

In fact I strap a case on each shoe so I can look down on the world!
