I just picked this game up for cheap and thought it looked interesting. I started playing it tonight and I have been enjoying it! It's like Ys III meets Rygar with muzak.
It's a platformer with a strict time limit per level with a boss every couple stages. Your character has a weapon that can be upgraded by collecting colored spheres. The enemies are a little cheap but have predictable patterns. The Graphics are nothing special but the stages are quite colorful so it makes for a nice looking game. The anime cutscenes are very colorful and well animated. The music is straight up elevator music but it doesn't get annoying and is very well composed.
It always surprises me at how many PCE games there are that you never here about. There is no Japanese text at all so it's completely playable by anyone with two thumbs.  I would recommend picking this game up if you can get it for $15 or less.
Has anyone else played this? PCEDAI only lists 1 user as clearing this game and it seems like a fun game to try and clear.

I have been really interested in this game since I read Chris Covell's writeup on it (click here if you've not yet seen). I must admit I tried it out on an emulator and couldn't get past the irritating disappearing platforms on stage 2  #-o

The story and atmosphere seems nice so I've been keeping an eye out for it on the cheap. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out the timing of those damn platforms...

People probably don't talk about this game because it has NO in-game screenshots at all on the back cover (like quite a few later PCE games...) and thus many people didn't buy it from cinemas alone.

Yeah, I mentioned the game and a few others by ARC in this post:  https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=10254.0

Its funny you add "with muzak". I think a lot of PCE games on CD could have "with muzak" in their description.

This game is indeed very difficult. I'm not really into platformers so I didn't really try to clear this game. Too hardcore for me.

Yeah  I had a problem with that too until I realized that the platform you stand on doesn't disappear from underneath you while you are standing on it.

I always thought this game was pretty neat.

Kinda wish the heroine didn't have a massive fuckin head though.

This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

Awesome, I'm always game for trying a new platformer out. Thanks for the heads up.

Are there any good resources out there for gaijin friendly PCE games? By chance I managed to end up with Galaxy Fraulien and Burai II. Both are just sheer walls of Japanese text.

I actually remember BITD seeing a pic or 2 of this game in EGM, or maybe it was Die Hard Gamefan?

It was advertised with screen shots quite often in ads for mail order stores.

Thanks. :) Most of my walkthroughs on that list are outdated and most likely aren't online at all in their latest form. They have all been updated with ascii art, but I still have several unfinished walkthroughs. I've been planning on putting the latest versions and the partials up on a page on my site, but it's just one more item on my long to-do list.

I first saw your walkthrough for Kabuki Den on Gamefaqs and the ascii art level of detail made my jaw drop.  I think you recently posted an updated version here (as of a few months ago?) and I downloaded that as well.  Really impressive work.  I'd never seen a text faq for a game look that nice.

Back when I was in high school I was really into ansi art.  I probably spent more time using TheDraw than was healthy.  It was the bbs ansi art community that probably led to my going to college for 3d animation and graphic design.  Ascii art is a higher level than ansi imo (because it's stripped down to black and white).  The stuff you've come up with is truly impressive.

I apologize for the tangent. :)  Folks really ought to check out Black Tiger's faqs if they haven't.  They're really cool.

Even though I didn't realize it at the time, it really helped to prepare me for pixel art. :)

When I first attempted ascii art, I couldn't believe that I managed to pull this off-

By the time I began a full in-depth Kabukiden walkthrough, I put this together very quickly-

I don't know if it would be possible due to memory, but those old text-only adventure games could have had nice text-only graphics and functioned like a modern digicomic adventure game.

Heck yes, we have played this game.  :pcgs:

It was one of my "Unsung" (unappreciated) games  back in 2007:

QuoteChris' Adventure (Hihou Densetsu Kris No Bouken) -  Wait! Don't crucify me! Initially, I thought this game was infuriating. Maybe it still is. But, for some reason, I've been really into it recently. Perhaps the dearth of platformers available on the PCE has nurtured my unhealthy attraction to this game, but I've been really addicted to it and each time I play I know I can get a *little* bit further, so I keep plugging away. Be forewarned: some of the platforming is incredibly unforgiving (i.e. jumping up on disappearing blocks to get to the next level, the TIME LIMIT that prevents "lame" players from slowly plodding through the game, the hit detection may or may not be accurate -- I can't tell, etc.).

I'm a sucker for the setting of this game, and I think the designers did an adequate job creating some atmosphere. The music complements the setting, and at least one track is pretty kool (so far).

Bottom line: Masochists will enjoy this platformer. Unsung? I don't know. I don't have high expectations for any game that is branded with "Pack-in Video".
Now, part of my inability to sway lots of folks is the fact that I have championed some pretty goofy/quirky games (I still stand behind all of them) that may leave a bad taste (follow aforementioned link for a few).

We need more Mayan Mayhem, as far as I'm concerned. More Aztec Agony. More Incan Indignities.

The RPG walkthroughs are cool. But I meant Japanese games that don't have much Japanese text in them, like this Kris's Adventure for example.

Many of the PCE RPGs that are light on text are very difficult for non-Japanese speaking players and many that aren't light on text are a breeze to play through.

You should start with the Legend of Xanadu II.

That could be any RPG. One item you need, or stupid conversation, and we are good to go. From what I understand Chris is basically another Indiana Jones wanna be, type of game.

Oh Indian Jones, yes we had a whole bunch of videogames staring him and his whip. Too bad everything is rated G.

I personaly realy liked this game, but that's all I can say about it. Never got too frustrated wth dissapearing things, but I remember there were some jumps that annoyed me for some reason.

So I just getting into this game as well. The first glance, as an experienced fiction fan/lover you will notice how this game takes after Indiana Jones, clones. However it lacks the speed, of those games. Another thing you will notice is how those tombs fall from the sky. So I consider this game an extremely mild Ernest Evans, or Ghost and Goblins. It can be very challenging, especially when you have one heart left and you fight like six enemies in a row, and then a lighting bolt comes out of nowhere and kills you. This game could be compared to "Future Boy Conan" and "Facuet Armour" in terms of difficulty.

The music of this game is reasonable. Traditional, lenguido cool sounding tracks. Some rock, nature, and other forms of music. You can leave the music running on and listen to it, for hours, so far.

Being a heroine character, sorta make this a magical girl game. Their is some sorta goddess, or force you hail to, and the game falls in line with, Valis, but she dresses like a tom boy, which makes the game kinda depressing.

Honest to gosh, this game is too serious, but is reasonable for a time killer. A plain looking female character, with another plain looking female and no comical outburst. However do not spend too much money on this game, at all. Unless their is something that I am missing, please tell me.

Oh about the powers, well think of it like a light Gunstar heroes. Sometimes they enhance, while other times they do not. If your a room with a bunch of enemies, chances are you need
to know how to use what. Enemies fire at you off screen, as you can do to them.

If you do not like challenging pot holes, and surrealism, then stay away. However if your looking more JRPG bliss, and you have nothing up your sleeve, then get this game

.................

INDIANA JONES, CLONES...............Okay seriously, great music, great action, but seriously the is a challenger. I do not know what to think about this game.

Started playing this one again. It's a pretty rad game once you get into it and get used to the controls. I'm on stage 5 but think I'll quite for the night. a lot of the levels are very tough from all the cheap shots plus you have to solve a puzzle in a very short time. A lot of trial and error involved in this one for sure.

I know (from the other thread) that you finished this game, but, yes: there are some really frustrating moments in this game.

You know how a goddamn poet expresses this frustration with unforgiving, cheap challenges and trial-and error?

Like so: "Mayan Mayhem. Aztec Agony. Incan Indignities."

HELL YES I QUOTED MYSELF.

DOUCHEBAG MOVE.
