10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

If this is too close to being the "what are you currently listening to?" thread, then feel free to lock it, but I decided we need a thread for the singular purpose of posting really good video game music!  Post what you think are some of the best songs from any game on any console (including PCE/Turbo!)  I'll start:

Stage 2 - Crisis Force (Famicom)

Fine choice, fine choice, I always liked that one too (and the only one out of that game if memory serves). But I'll raise you a Super Star Soldier: Stage 6, another one of my favorites:
Actually, no, I'll raise you a stage 2, too! It was this chip tune that was one of my all time favorites:
Nostalgia moment: I tried to master this shooter many many eons ago. I could get to stage 6 with my first guy on the maximum difficulty level (that's after you've unlocked the menu with the secret code). I always loved how everything could go perfect, then the one mistake causes everything to fall apart and turn into a debacle, usually at the boss. Then you can't do nothing but keep dying because you've lost your fully powered up weapons with the first death, so all those free guys you earned mean nothing - no choice but to get completely killed off and use a continue to get another shot, eh, not always, but that was my experience a lot of the times. Fun little gem of a shooter, though!

Speaking of stage 2's I raise you Outzone Stage 2! Uemura 4 lyfe

Nice choice Henry! I like how the music changes when you start zipping through those mazes. It's a great transition and fits really nicely with the mood of the level.

It is so darn tough to choose just one track from one of this game, but I am going with the Cavern theme in Shadow of the Beast. What an amazing composition, especially with the inclusion of wind instruments.

Dragon Saber - Stage 2 is the bee's knees!
Shadow of the Colossus - Revived Power.  Fantastic!
Shubibinman 3 - Stage 2 - short but magnificent.
Assassin Title on Amiga.  Might not grab you, but its prog-rock-ish tune stayed in my head for weeks recently!
All of Legendary Axe II's soundtrack!

That was one of my many PS2 games purchased years ago that had been sitting around doing nothing until a couple of weeks ago when I somehow managed to break my spell of non-game-playing and decided to start with this! I think seeing Adam Sandler's character playing this game in his movie "Reign Over Me" also had me wondering about it, which added to my decision to finally play it! I finished it in a couple of days and while the plot is basically riding around with your horse to fight the next gigantic boss, it's an excellent game and I enjoyed it!

It is, but the arpeggios in the melodies sort of compensate for the few sound channels on the Game Gear, producing a fuller-sounding melody.  You see that trick a lot in 8-bit chiptunes (the good ones, anyway :P )

Nexzr Stage 2 - Doesnt hurt that its one of my favorite PC Engine games but great music none the less.
Ys 1/2 Termination - maybe someone alread posted this but I just love it at 1:30 in this video.
Dune 2 Battle Theme - One of my favorite games as a kid (I was a Dos gamer) and this theme always got me excited.  This video sounds pretty close to what my Dos machine sounds like.  It depends on your sound card.  I use a basic SB16/AWE32 card.

What an amazing thread!  You guys have made my list shorter.  I would add GoT stuff but it's already on there.  Same with Ys I&II so I'll add some others:

Ys III Wanderers from Ys PCE - Shock of the Death God
Actraiser Original Soundtrack - 12 - World Tree
Contra 3 The Alien Wars Music - Stage 3: The Old Cyber Steel Mill
I fucking miss the old Konami.  They had some of the best music in their games.

Dungeon Explorer All of it!!!!!!
Quartet
Original Ridge Racer is still the best out of the whole series for music!
M.U.S.H.A. - Aggressive Attack
Devil's Crush - Main Stage Theme
Axelay Colony (2nd BGM)
Zuntata is the best ever!!  One of my favorites.
Last one!...for now!  These are all my top personal favorites.  Sorry for so many!

Glad you liked it too geise. :) The whole game has an incredible soundtrack. Follin was a genius at pushing hardware to its limits in terms of sound. The soundtrack for Plok doesn't sound anything like a typical SNES game. It's a great game too BTW, very cool level designs.

The Hybrid Front is a Genesis game that I've never even played, but I listen to its soundtrack all the time. The main composer is Naofumi Hataya, who did stuff like the totally bitchin' Virtua Racing replay track. Also, Sonic CD.

Youtube is shockingly short on tracks for it right now, but here's a decent one.

No joke, I actually put this stuff on when I work out.

Download the set at http://project2612.org/

While you're there, pick up the soundtrack to Cosmic Carnage. It's a terrible 32X game, but it maybe has the best soundtrack out of all the games on the system. Sample.

I won't lie, I'm kind of a Sega junkie.

The Hybrid Front has got to be my favorite sleeper soundtrack. The whole thing is good, and there are plenty of tracks. If you get the set, load up "Rebellion Fight BGM 2" and the next one, "PETO Fight BGM 1".

One more rare one. Listen with extra base for Japanese 80's PC game music at it's finest. Never played this one, either.

You know, speaking of game music, if we could make an archive-torrent of all PCE game music, specifically the chip stuff, I would download and seed the shit out of it. I feel like there must be some fantastic stuff that I don't know about, but I'm kind of turned off by the current state of HES rips and players. Even using emulators like Ootake sounds quite a lot more accurate and would be better for making rips.

Anyway, I'll shut up now, but not before posting my favorite track from Legend of Xanadu II.

(1) I'm loving all these tunes, especially the specific tracks you singled out. Everything is great :pcgs:

(2) A few of us are trying to create ONE massive archive for all TG-16/PCE music. Honestly, I don't even care if it is redundant, I want to create ONE place where EVERYTHING  can be found (.hes, mp3, whatever).

(3) My dream is that we will be able to include excellent metadata for everything, plus cover art. This will be the most labor intensive aspect, but we can slowly chop away at it. First, get all the music in one place. Next, fastidiously document/tag everything.

(4) A fellow PCE fan created something that I'll share with everyone tonight. I've been too busy to check it out myself. Hopefully some folks will enjoy it  :pcgs:.

Awesome news all around, my friend. :)

You should try to find a couple PCE music junkies and do it with them. If you throw it out there for everyone, it will be too hard to manage, but a couple key people to split the workload with you could make things look a lot more doable.

Hope to see it happen!

Since someone posted a track from Dune 2 I though some Dune tracks are in order. First, the intro, this thing not only is really great mood setting music but the visual are absolutely a work of art in and of themselves.

Then there is the travel music.

Lastly a track from one of my personal favorites on the NES, Guardian Legend.

BlueBMW

Wow!  I almost posted some music from Dune on PC... glad someone else did!  Excellent music / game that one was.

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!

Burning Force on the Genesis is an average game with some respectable visuals and some good songs. The arcade version is better on each front. This is maybe the best tune in the game, from stage four of the arcade version. Journey back to 1989...
As an odd aside, I think the simple image of the collapsed dome on the edge of the scrolling ocean's horizon in stage one of the genesis version is actually really cool. The music goes well with it. Sound effects are too loud, though.

Lots of folks have tried the amazing Gimmick! on the Famicom, if only through emulation. It's an amazing game with a happy soundtrack that compliments the visual atmosphere perfectly. The first stage music is great, but if you ask me, it's the music to the paradise-in-the-clouds last stage (only reachable by collecting hidden items in the other stages) that's the best. Be sure to listen with some bass!

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32377930/Gimmick%20-%20Sophia.mp3

Gimmick used a sound enhancement chip called the FME-07, so even if you find ordinary Famicom music a little on the primitive side, this one might surprise you.

I immediately hunted down the complete soundtrack. Awesome pick! The music gets a little drowned out in the game itself, so it's nice to get a straight take of it.

One of my all-time favorite soundtracks is Battle Garegga's. Every track is good, and there's plenty of variety - so much that I hate to pick one track to represent the whole thing. Here's Stage 1, and with a nice bonus - while the track on the CD doesn't really loop at all, I went ahead and manually looped it three times.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32377930/Battle%20Garegga%20%28J%2904.mp3

Funny thing about this track - it sounds good coming out of crappy speakers. Somehow, I think that's how it would sound playing through some crude old radio headphones in a WWII fighter cockpit.

Johnny Turbo

I know metal squad has been mentioned but this song is awesome!
