10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Well....It's late and my eyes bleed so that's about all I can come up with for now. Hopefully Mike will be by with both barrels loaded. IMG

First, where have you been. You gotta post at least 3-4 times per year. :)

Second, anything that will inspire Mr. H. to post is a good thing.

Third, in general, everyone benefits when they learn how to distinguish a hack (OGHUGO) from a halfway-decent craftsman.

QUICK, link to the "Mods of Shame" thread.

Bright blue and red huge caps description.  Totally professional.  :D

I hope somebody saves these poor machines one day.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)
BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere. You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

Why do people feel the need to add an LED when you can clearly tell if the unit is on or off just by looking at the switch. Is it blocking the HuCard slot? Congratulations, it's on! See a big, bold color by the switch? Holy crap, another indicator that it's on!

DeshDildo

I actually like the electrical tape more than the glue.  I have been noticing those pictures on the bay and wondered who it was.
"You CAN'T prove Nulltard/DoxPhile caused ANY harm/damage/sabotage to PCEFX!! You have NO evidence he poached ANY members for his own failed PC Engine forum/site or was a conniving destructive saboteur! ZERO, ZIP, NADA!!! Nulltard did nothing wrong!"

ToyMachine78

I don't mind the LEDs. I think it looks nice. But my god that is a cheap looking switch. It looks like the end of a zip tie is sticking out the console.

cjameslv

How dare you people mock this mans work. He is a professional!!! Did you not see his font choices and colors stating clearly right in his description "professional". Wait professional isn't enuf... nay FUCKIN nay i say, this man is a god among men and you mere mortals know not of what you speak.

Nazi NecroPhile

Hot glue, fuck yeah!

Real ballers game in the dark.  You could always look at the screen to see if it's on or not, but that's just too easy.

'Tis a perfect match for a paperclip sticking out of a PVM, no?

To make sure it's receiving power. Could be useful for troubleshooting.

the glue is actually not a bad idea there as it relieves stress on the pins
the board mounting on the other hand not so great

Ahh yeah been a while since I have posted. At any rate, less concerned about him using glue on the pins that were soldered to, or to hold wires down. That is actually beneficial as it will keep things in place. Over all I have seen better, I have seen worse. Not sure what to make of the electrical tape thing. He could have done that a little cleaner if tape was a must.

I have been in spots before though where I was less concerned with how the tape looked and more concerned about just covering an area to make sure the metal shielding did not make contact. Typically work done on tight spots at the bottom of a pcb where I just had to lay a couple of layers down to act as a barrier between the wires and pcb and the fcc shield.

If he was just wrapping a low profile breadboard though then he could have just as easily taken the clear plastic from a blister pack from a toys package or something, cut it to cover both sides and glued it down with some epoxy or something.

To mount switches however, I don't get that. Over the long run that wont hold up. Can he not find a single switch that can be panel or screw mounted?

In the end though I think the major thing is that the level of work he is doing would be considered fine if it was for personal use or just as a free service to someone who is not expecting high quality craftsmanship. When you are doing stuff for yourself specifically you can get into a tendency to get a little sloppy or creative. Since it is on your dime no harm, no foul.

A major worry with modders is burn out. You do it long enough, and too often at that, then you will eventually burn out. Usually your only major concern is that it works and will hold up at that point, and you start caring less and less how nice your work looks. Maybe he is burned out? I would really like to see what is under the tape wrap before I say much more though on the quality of his work though.

I am at that point now myself, the burnout, which is why I don't want to mess with any of it anymore. Doing any projects for anyone or anything like that. The need/want to care about doing this stuff has kind of left me, so quality will suffer and I would rather not subject anyone to that on any future mod projects until I can get properly motivated and take pride in the work again.

Its hard to do because I am really not caring about the scene much these days since Sini was killed. He was keeping me actively interested in it, so without him prodding me into playing/clearing games, things are just not the same for me. He made the scene be about more then just daily drama or lulz for me. Outside of the forum stuff,  he simply was a true friend and a great gamer who knew his shit and he knew how to get me properly motivated and challenged. He really did keep me going, and managed to get me back into it a couple times there after I was getting severely burned out.

I tried to stick with it all still for a bit after what happened last year. I thought swapping over to playing Genesis/Mega Drive and trying stuff I never played prior for a bit would help by keeping things fresh and new, but it didn't. The interest is just gone.  The fact of the matter is that without someone there discussing the stuff almost weekly, if not daily with me on a personal level, not just forum posting, and trying to keep me challenged/motivated, and pointing me to new games to try, it just is not the same for me. Moving and downsizing things last year did not help either.

Now the prices are so crazy on TG/ PCE hardware that even if I wanted to I couldn't afford to get back into it anyway. My kids are teens now, so everything they need cost more, so trying to toss $250-300 down on a Duo-R is simply not going to happen. I simply can not justify the cost for a system I know I wont play when I don't have any friends who will motivate me to do so, that are currently actively playing it too. So I am afraid my time is up, and my love affair with all things NEC/Hudson has run its course.

Due to that my only gaming activity anymore as of late has been World of Tanks for PC. It's cheap to play and fun, and I have a guy I chat with and platoon with often on there that keeps me motivated and challenged. My wn8 rating for the game is currently above 1700, which is considered very good/way above average. That in itself is both a blessing and a curse. People can use XVM to see my ratings in matches, and teammates who are terrible at the game will expect me to carry them to wins constantly.

I hear you.

Of course, don't sell your games and gear. You might be back here in a year, or two, or five.

You think you're done with this.

But it's in your heart and soul. It's tattooed on your brain.

Do that real life stuff.

I know you will be back. Re-energized. Faith restored. Interest renewed.

I've had many months/years of disappearing and re-appearing here. Which, of course, coincided with playing and not playing games (on any platform).

Also, and most importantly, if you are going to go on "hiatus" in the near future....promise me you'll sing the title song from Final Zone II every once in a while. When you're bored, perhaps. Or happy. Or when facing a difficult decision. It can be your mantra.

That's all I ask, comrade.

P.S. I'll be here when you stop back in a decade. Promise.

Part of the problem for me is the challenge is gone. Honestly I just have this tendency to blow through games way to easily, new ones or old ones. Sini kept me going by constantly introducing me to new titles, the harder the better, but those days are over now.  As of late, I think it took me less then a day to finish Wolfenstein the New Order on its release, which was the last modern single player game I played. I have other modern titles here waiting to be played, but I am just like fuck it, who cares. Last classic game I beat was The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy on Mame, which took I guess around 40 mins. I kinda had to force myself to finish that one. It wasn't a bad game by any means, but part of me felt like I was just doing it by the numbers. It just wasn't hard really and I started to get bored half way through it.

Just at that point where I need to be consistently challenged. World of Tanks is keeping me going since there is enough quality players to run into on public matches, and there is a lot of player interaction. AI based stuff just isn't doing it for me these days. There just isn't any satisfaction in beating the cpu into the ground anymore. No ego or pride is involved. It doesn't get offended and rant or whine back to you about how unfair the world is like some noob you pubstomped in a multiplayer match. And if you don't have anyone close who is into the same single player/classic games, then you don't have anyone to discuss the game clears with on a consistent basis. It all just feels isolated and meaningless playing the old stuff anymore.

Trust me, there is nothing like going into a match and posting "May Stalin's hand guide my shells to victory", then spamming HE and HEAT shells out of a tier 7 Russian SU-152 with a crew set up with camo, sixth sense, and deadeye, into a bunch of Tier 8-9 tanks and watching the players on the enemy team rage. Better still, trolling tier 7-8 players with a German Tier 9 VK 45.02B, watching them waste shots as they try to pen your angled frontal hull. Or after a hard fought victory having random teammates tell you how impressed they were and thanking you for doing your part.

Maybe something will change down the road, but I am just kinda doubtful. Just at that point now where when I game I want a lot of interaction with other players and a high level of challenge.
