I just watched this new Pat the NES Punk video
And basically he says he doesn't believe there's much interest in Super Famicom and Famicom games. Well I'm not up on Famicom but this couldn't be any further from the truth with Super Famicom. In the last two years demand for Super Famicom games has gone absolutely crazy, to meet the demand prices have gone through the roof, tons of games have quadrupled in price.
They also talk a bit about TurboGrafx and PC Engine.

I like to watch Pat but its funny how off or clueless he is on some things. On one video he was talking about Razer buying Ouya, and he was like don't they make scooters. I've never bought a Razer product but I  thought most people with any interested in gaming at least knew they made PC peripherals.

Why do people dislike Pat the NES Punk so much?  I mean, I'm not a fan OR hater but I don't see how he's different than any other popular YouTube gaming personality.  What did he do to rub people the wrong way?

Sometimes he is accurate—he seems to be speaking from experience (rooted in a lifelong love for games).

He seems reasonable with most of his ideas/arguments (I've only seen a few of his videos, mind you).

However, like most folks who speak off-the-cuff...he over-generalizes, says silly stuff that is illogical) because he hasn't fully considered the implications/counter-evidence)....relies on faltering memory (when it would take mere seconds to verify online, etc.

I think he has charisma and is entertaining (at times).

It's youtube shows like this that actually drive up older game prices. Popular personality loves or plays a game = a new demand for said game.

I buy three copies of every game Joe and Dave recommend. Sometimes even four.

(Serious note, I only went out and bought a game once on their recommendation for fear of a price hike, and that game was Bee 52. It wasn't nearly as good as Dave implied it being.)

Some of the Gamesack videos are really well thought out and all, and have great content. Some of them though feel like time wasters put out there to just to say "Hey we are still here". I wish they would go bi-weekly or something instead of every week, and do better videos then filler about demo disc.

And I mean, each episode doesn't have to be about a bunch of games from some specific genre or whatever. It would be cool to see someone take the time to focus on one specific game, dig up as much dirt about it as possible including regional differences or last min changes made to the game, and do a good piece on it. There are plenty of games that deserve that kind of video. Akumajo Densetsu, Run Sabre, Bionic Commando etc.

I agree. I think that *depth* is seriously lacking everywhere (not just GameSack).

Sure, a handful of articles/videos/posts might dig into something, but it is rare.

(A) The dude from magweasel...he digs into things sometimes. It might not have been groundbreaking stuff for Japanese PCE fans, but it was fun for non-Japanese speaking folks. I wish he didn't abandon his PCE magazine project—he put things *into context*, which is something that requires knowledge of Japan, and historical events in pop culture history.....not simply language skills.

I saved all his PCE posts because I know I'll re-read it.

(B) I really don't know the French PCE scene (I have a toddler's grasp of the language), but I get the impression that they had a somewhat informed view of the PCE that we (NA TG-16 fans) lack, even to this day. I'm talking about possessing a basic, solid understanding of the Japanese market, economics of industry, role of developers, etc.

Anyway...

I don't find Pat super entertaining, but he is knowledgable about some things and does go about seeking out answers the right way even if it's too late.

He actually did take the time to post here around the time of his TG16 video and got a lot of answers and clarifications to misconceptions he had about the system and how the US side of the business was run. I appreciate the effort even if he could handle it better.

Pat the NES Turd sometimes has some hairier turd with him in his videos and they sit there and bitch about shit they know nothing about or even other youtube gamer personalities like they are some authority. And I'm fine with bitching, I do an awful lot of it, but The NES Turd isn't entertaining. I don't want to use language like "retarded" but this is the grown up (I use that term lightly "Broadcasting live from my mom's basement, I'm Pat The NES Turd") version of the kid that got that treatment on the playground in grade school.

Also, Why does everyone need a title? "The NES Turd," "Angry Video Game Nerd," "Happy Video Game Nerd," Metal Jesus," ...???! This is like the dude that introduces himself with the nickname he chose for himself. "No, no, no, dude. You're shit doesn't pick your own nickname. Your friends do and they do it to bring you down a peg or mark you for something awesome or awful that you did. That's how it works!"

I don't like how Pat and the other guy talk about how lame it is that people have a collection on their shelves/whatever while sitting in front of that many NES games.  I'm convinced that anyone who owns a NES World Championship cart is a collectard of the highest order and to look down on other people for trying to do exactly what Pat's done is hypocritical.

That really is unfathomable how collectard-ish that is. I mean they aren't even complete games. They are a couple levels from a bunch of bad games. It's not like anyone picks those up and decides to play them at all. The value is absolutely only in rarity and not 1% in playability.

No... He is 100% certified hoarder collectard of the highest order. Its one thing to collect shit to sit on a shelf so you can look at it, admire it, and use it to boost your self esteem, but he has tons of shit boxed up in his garage that he never even sees or uses. What's the point!?

If he has extensively documented each game and hosts a mega site dedicated to the NES, where he makes all the info and media free to the public and is helping to preserve history, that would be a huge achievement.

Spending money is nothing to brag about.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Credit to Pat he does do an annual NES marathon, where he gives all the money raised to charity.
Not sure the exact details of the marathon but I think he plays a bit of all the NES games in his collection in one sitting??

He did that for the first year (maybe second as well, I can't remember). He mainly has a set # of games that he plays now if they hit goals or if you donate a certain amount then you can request a game to be played. He and Ian usually do it for about 24-30 hours straight and they normally raise in the range of $15,000 a year for charity

This a thousand times. What fucktards think that someone who can just ebay a collection has achieved anything? Mention his charity work, not his collectardation.

Just like that guy that bought every single PS2 game. Way to go, guy. You bought a bunch of games you'll never play, you'll never think about twice, just to say you did. You've successfully started a circle jerk.

Mzo

Pat's a horrible actor and I really dislike his skits and hackneyed writing.  I feel embarrassed for him when I watch them and, if someone were to walk into the room while I was doing so, I would probably die of embarrassment myself.

I enjoyed his flea market madness videos until he changed his reaction faces to go out of their way to show his flexed bicep somehow.  They're still ok, though.

I listen to the Completely Unnecessary Podcast because I really like Ian.  They're wrong about a bunch of stuff but it's ok.  In the last one I listened to someone wrote in asking their opinion on Rare Replay fixing the Battletoads glitch and Ian had it in his head it was running out of lives for one player leading to a continue and level restart in a two player game, which isn't a glitch at all.  Weird they wouldn't have ever heard of the glitch that disables the second player's controls during the Clinger Winger stage, but sure!

I assume he's popular because he's been around forever and not because he's particularly talented or charming in any way.

I don't base any of my opinions of Pat on his videos. Well... maybe just one. His NES Punk videos seem awfully similar to Irate Gamer videos in the way they flow and are edited, except Irate Gamer has more green screen effects. But still, they're the same. Gameplay with someone decent dialog, pop back out (re: interrupt) to Pat (or Chris Bores) on camera for an awful joke, then back to more gameplay. But anyway my opinions of Pat are based on working with the man himself. Any of you guys ever have a manager who thinks he knows your job better than you even though he absolutely doesn't? A manager that places more stock in his ego and control than the quality of the product being produced? That's Pat. I have not heard of one editor from The Video Game Years that likes the guy. Oh sure, we all start out liking him. But make a suggestion and BOOM Pat blows up because A) He didn't come up with it and B) You posted it so all the other editors can see it and that is embarrassing for Pat... even though the suggestions involve the other editors. Pat told one of the editors to fuck off at Too Many Games. Can't remember why but not at all surprised.

Bottom line: He takes himself too seriously and that's why he's always getting pranked by Billy and Jay from the Game Chasers. He gets really quiet when that happens.

He talks a lot about his Writing and Acting, capital letters implied.  If he was humble about it and it was the best he could do, I'd be cool with it.  It's the way he's cocky about something terrible that makes me think less of him.

He does come off as exactly the kind of guy you're describing, Joe.  That sucks =/
