First time I've ever owned RGB -anything- ... I need to start looking into mods for my PCE haha.
Nice pick up!  I saw you went to Magfest in another thread, I don't know if that means you are close to or from Maryland, but I am trying to find one locally too, so I'd be curious as to where you scored it.
I got it from a guy who went to MAG, but he was from Georgia. I'm actually from NJ, so it was a couple hour drive to get it back home. Best of luck on the hunt though, I feel the best places to source stuff is from places like MAGFest for sure- just be ready to pay market price because people obviously know what they are selling.

I have been saving/ talking to my co-worker for 4 months. Said he had a old turbo unit, and games. Told him I was interested if he ever wanted to sell it all.

We spoke, and I admitted it was a somewhat expensive proposition. He looked up prices off ebay and said that was all too high.

He said he wanted 300 and asked that I not get rid of any of it. I told him its a deal.  Best Day EVER!

agreed. I do have a loose that I think I am for sure going to raffle baffle off. Because I don't need 3 copies, haha. But it is extremely cool to be able to play most of the games on both my DUO or the TGCD unit, and just get to have that part of history. Very cool. Works great too, haha.

Make sure you check out the CD+G if you've not seen 'em before.  They're kinda neat as an oddity.

Just overpaid on an Ebay auction (GB stuff) because I got in a bidding war frenzy.  Kinda hoped I would get sniped at the last minute, didn't.  Ah well, it was only like $15 bucks I'm quibbling over.  Looks like I got a nice copy of Kirby's Block Ball which is what I wanted, and some other crap but all in the protective cases.  So I got some extra cases out of the deal too.  I just wish the other stuff was worth something to re-sell.

You can just send it to me. Ill give it a good one :P Nice pickup though. I fear I may have made a mistake on putting a bid on this as high as I did. But its a cool T shirt.

The other games I got were Tamagotchi (no interest really), Home Alone 2 (the kind of game I try not to have around if I can help it), Battleship, and Wave Race.  Wave Race is the only other one I might kinda want because it's a 1st party Nintendo title, but it doesn't look mindblowing to me.  Kirby in good condition and the extra cases are worth the money though.  If you or anyone else is interested the other three games I mentioned (even possibly wave race, lemme try it out) for a couple bucks, shoot me a PM.

I saw those Splatterhouse shirts in my travels, pretty cool!  You will look all GQ smoov in that for sure.

I just got in this PC-98 notebook from Japan. It's a PC-9821Na13. This is one of the models that has the ability to use the FM sound a lot of games use. This is also a later model so it has a nice big screen. Usually when you see these on yahoo Japan the screens are messed up but I made sure to get one that had a nice screen. I plan on installing a Compact Flash hard drive on this. Now I have the big 4 Japanese computers- X68000, FM Towns, MSX2+ and PC-98

Although I am familiar with the other gaming computers you mentioned thanks to Game Sack I am rather clueless to the PC 98. Could you elaborate more?

tknjin

@Medic_wheat while it was similar to the things such as x68k and other things of that nature.  NEC also produced their line of computers.  Their first one being the NEC PC88 and then this one being the NEC PC 98. It was to a lot of eroge visual novels that have been featured on both the pc engine and the saturn.  Things like Dead of the Brain, Steam Hearts, Yu-NO, Desire, Eve Burst Error and things of that nature.  It was their 16/32 bit computer and had quite the color palette to really bring the characters to life.  Here is a picture from eve burst error(http://www.mobygames.com/images/shots/l/473043-eve-burst-error-pc-98-screenshot-wow-looking-stylish-marina.gif).  Depending on the model they will either have 3.5 inch floppy drives, or the 5.2.  This is an important note because some of the games are in different types of floppy formats, so that is also something to take into consideration.  For example, Dead of the Brain 1 is on 3.5 inch floppy while the 2nd game is on 5.2 in.  That is about the extent of my knowledge.

While I may not know the entire library of this computer in particular, however, PunkCryborg will be able to possibly elaborate on the specs moreso than I could.

The PC-88 and PC-98 computer line was much more popular in Japan than X68000 and FM Towns but it doesn't have as many arcade and action type games as those other computers. There's also a lot of different models and not one system that does it all. You don't hear about it as much from westerners because it scares off a lot of people from getting into it and most people just emulate the games instead. There's also TONS of porn games. If you see computer pixel art from some 90s JP pc game of some anime babe on tumblr it probably came form a PC98 comic adventure game. There's a couple cool platformers, puzzle and even a couple shooters I'm mainly interested in playing

Thank you for providing more details regarding this computer.

It's seems to be much like the Marty and other computers used for JP gaming emulation will be the easiest and more approachable way for me to experience these games. I have yet to dip my toe in it.

I guess it comes down to my preference for system games where it is much less likely to need extensive knowledge of computer systems and repair to enoy original hardware/games.

The extent of my PC gaming as amid was Blood and Duke Nukem 3D which would cause the family computer to crash at times and lead a ban on using the expensive family computer that was ment for taxes and home work to be used in such a matter.

PunkCryborg

Yeah I don't recommend getting real Japanese computers if you want to just check out the games. They are all emulated pretty well and a lot of the games are in Mame, anthologies or ported elsewhere

I feel you are correct in this assessment. I'd have no attachment to the way in which I would play these games and possibly enjoy t much more due to the ease of use.

I this way I feel emulation is a good thing. It can preserve games which have increasingly become harder to find, not in the public eye due to the system it was one, or the way in which they where ported over/made to be played is nearly impossible for your average game player.

This is why I think that those who are adviid collectors of these gaming computers, arcade PCBs, and gaming systems which where not main stream are important. They can preserve at times repair or desire for these older systems/computer to be repaired. Other wise people would simply toss these old computers in a e waste recycling bins.

In my mind a designated computer gaming area is needed with accessibility and ease of use. Other wise they will just sit and collect dust like some sort of trophy or oddity that is point at remarked upon but never enjoyed or used.

Yes it is region free. I am playing it on a UK console.  The copy I got came with a CD Audio and personally I think the OST in this game is pretty decent.

IMG

I was pretty bummed out because raiden 4 and Raiden Aces never made an official appearance in the UK so I can't really compare V to those games.

you start by selecting 3 ships Azuma, Spirit of Dragon and Moulin Rouge,  All have a different stats such as less speed but more armor, more attack but less speed etc and a basic missile attack.  Each ship also has an energy bar so once that is depleted it's game over.

You then select the laser weapons (Bend or Catch Plasma, Wide or Swing Vulcan, Lightning or Charge Laser) you want to pick up and how it reacts in battle.  There are 3 types (red= Vulcan, blue = Laser and purple=Plasma) and each can be leveled up to 10 by collecting the desired power up.

There is something called a cheer meter which once fully powered up you can summon another raiden ship to provide a brief few seconds of arsenal although you can still take damage.
Plus you have your standard bombs.

During each stage there is an option to branch out to different paths but I haven't figured this out yet.

The Left and Right Triggers switch between different side panels, the Right is in-game dialogue relating to the action and game story while the left side shows stat data.

Graphics wise it's not very pretty, graphics look like something from the ps2 era and I think Gradius V and Ikaruga look better. The transition from completing a stage and going to the next or loading of a certain boss area also looks a little amateurish .  It's basically a low budget release with barely any 2D sprites or artwork in-game.   You get a normal game mode, boss mode, gallery, options, leaderboard.

Even though it is a vertical shooter the game rotates, zooms in and out etc.  Feels like some of the inspiration is borrowed from Treasure and CAVE games.  You also can collect medals and when you are not shooting if you leave the fire button alone for a few seconds the medals gets sucked towards you and even power ups zone in on you in this mode.    You can also collect fairies and that blue mascot thing for points but I don't know what other features they offer.

You can see the first stage here although video is 30fps the game runs at 60.  I don't think it's worth grabbing an xbox one for this. I don't know if it will turn up on any other console or even hand held but I think it's been tweeted that it will come stateside and EU/UK too.  Also the game has unlimited continues which if you do use em all can quite possibly complete the game on the same day.  I find that after the first stage which is quite short the levels that follow get longer and bullets start to rain down.  I actually find that I keep coming back to this and try for that impossible mission 1cc.  Unfortunately I have had the game crash on me several times and you will lose your progress if that happens.

The packaging, I wish they still provided with manual there isn't any and also both the game and music disc are placed into one single spindle and I found it really hard to remove the game disc to the point where it felt like I was going to crack and split the disc trying to get it out!

http://xboxdvr.com/gamer/Digichan2006/video/15452371

This is the stage branching but I haven't figured out how to branch out..

Got me a new Neo Geo game.  Aggressors of Dark Combat (Gan Gan)  Obviously another fighting game but it's like Streets of Rage style fighting.  The game's major innovation is the ability to walk into the background, in a similar manner to some 1980s arcade fighting games like Taito's Violence Fight, SNK's Street Smart and Atari's Pit-Fighter. Because of this, unlike many other 2D fighting games, the game uses one action button to jump, and does not use the "D" button, unlike many SNK fighting games. Only two action buttons are used for attacking (punch and kick); instead, grappling and grabbing opponents is the focus of the gameplay: opponents can counter being grabbed and break free as well. Also featured is weapon play (another mechanic akin to beat 'em ups). Weapons can be picked up and thrown, or used in special and standard attacks. Weapons are thrown into the ring by spectators in the background.
