I'm a pretty huge fan of MD, but the sound quality is not that great in any player I've used, and in general iPods are slightly louder, although not any better. Loudness is a serious problem with MD players. *Puny* weak-ass headphone amps in those fucking things.

Smaller perhaps, yeah. But a decent Discman isn't huge-- the size of a CD but a little thicker. Plus I never usually find myself needing to listen to more than 74 minutes of music consecutively. Pop in a self-made mix packed to the brim and I'm good to go. My Discman even has a Shuffle mode! Yay me!

iPods are nice for people that go on long runs or do lots of active, exercise-y things and need to listen to music while they do it. That kind of person, I am not.

I'd love to have an ipod or mp3 player (one day I'll get one), but I have to say: it will be annoying to have to rip my cd's. A Discman really is convenient, for me, since I have a bazillion cd's. Plus, I have a disc-changer in the car and I listen to my stereos all the time.

I will eventually do the whole mp3 player thing... and it will be neat. One day.

Seeing as I work in a quiet office, and I use public/mass transit, I like being able to carry around my music library and a nice amount of video with me.

Loudness ≠ great sound quality. There are a few Sony players that have crappy headphone amps, but still have better sound quality than I have heard with an iPod playing uncompressed audio. The dynamic range seemed seriously flattened, and the bass response was awful. Proper headphones will also ensure that the volume cap is not an issue.

I've noticed the bass response seems pretty bad with my wife's iPod. I always keep the equalizer on "Bass Boost" or whatever it's called if I listen to it. Even then, the bass is only halfway decent.

I tried experimenting with the bass boost on the iPod. First of all my memory of it is not all that detailed, but I kind of remember the settings either being to wimpy or boosting too high of a frequency, so the bass was not smooth, but instead "boomy" to the point where it would sound more like a thud than smooth bass. Again, this is just my vague recollection. But what I do remember vividly is that the bass was bad and everything sounded flattened and the dynamic range was extremely compressed. I guess it was designed for those wimpy "ear-bud" type of headphones.
