The best Turbo game from 1989. choose it.

List taken from pcedaisakusen.net; if entries are missing or wrong, blame them, not me.

Edit: I know at least Ys I+II is missing from the list.

OldRover

Tough choice.

The Galaga '90 one is interesting though...why would it come out in '89 if it was '90? Did someone in 1990 take a time machine back to 1989 to release it? #-o

Without a doubt - Takin' It To The Mother Fuckin' Hoop.

I say Dungeon Explorer, but ask me again and I'll probably say Military Madness.

Military Madness FTW.  It was one of the 2 first games I ever played for the Turbo.

I had to say Sidearms. It is the most technically impressive game out of the lot. At a glance...notice how many of these games are ports or reinterpretations? :D

I expect to see Keranu vote for either Keith Courage or China Warrior.

C'mon, that's common practice in video game land.

Bomberman '93 was released in '92, Bomberman '94 was 1993, I'm sure most of those stupid Madden games were released at the end of the year prior to what they are listed as...

Anyway, I'll give someone who can guess my pick a cookie.

I voted for R-Type mainly because it was the game I was most concerned with when I first rented/played the Turbo back in 1989.  Sure, I had rented other games like Legendary Axe and Victoly Run, but in that year it was all about R-Type since I already had the SMS version.  And R-Type on the Turbo was pretty damn impressive.

Turbo D

I voted Fantasy Zone!  8) I actually bought the turbo to play AirZonk and high quality versions of sms games like dragon's curse and fantasy zone.

I almost voted Fantasy Zone, as it was my second-ever TG game (KC being the first).

I voted Blazing Lazers.. the level 8 music is just unforgettable. I also liked the music in the desert level, I think it was 5..??

Lots and lots of sweet games on this list.

aboslute agree!! r-type was the jaw droppin' game of the decade and the pce did the best to bring it into everyones 4 walls.

Had to go with Final Lap Twin.  Before Bomberman, it was one of the few games to offer good multiplayer action.  But seriously, it was a tough choice b/w Legendary Axe, Blazing Lazers, and Military Madness.

The quest is definitely beatable... don't ask me how... my memory of the late 80's and early 90's is foggy at best.

OldRover

Quote from: BonksRevenge on 02/19/2008, 07:08 PMi voted military madness since its actually BEATABLE

i was going to vote for Final Lap Twin but in 1989 i wouldnt have had save states to get me to the end in the RPG mode since the passwords JIP YOU!!!!! My friend left his TG16 on for DAYS trying to beat that game and still couldnt do it, i cant beat it since im on the last race and have no idea where the best tires in the game are. At least i beleive thats the only part im missing.
Here's a walkthrough for Final Lap Twin's Quest mode:

Its a toss up between Dungeon Explorer and Military Madness, but I voted for DE since questy RPG'ish games are my favorite.

Wow. The way people have been talking up Dungeon Explorer lately, I thought it was sure to win. Didn't realize Blazing Lazers was that popular.

OldRover

Blazing Lazers is a top-notch game, so it's no surprise that it would be high on people's lists.

Some of those titles are quite nice, but Blazing Lazers has to take it. There's just no other way to fly than Compile.

SignOfZeta

Back in the day I would have voted R-Type all the way, but nowadays I can't really stand the game and would much more likely be playing Galaga '90 than the others because its still actually fun.

BTW, even though there are way too many "favorite" whatever poles on here right now, think this is a good one. We should do every year, and then start over again with PC Engine.

Yeah, I'm kinda poll happy. I already have the 1990 one ready to go; I was just going to wait for activity on this one to slow down.

However, I'm not sure I want to start over with the PCE; it's a lot more complicated and would take a while longer.

it was ahead of it's time, of course ;)

Seriously, that seems to be standard practice with games with years in the title. kinda like cars.

awack

93 is going to be tough with choices such as Dracula X, Winds of thunder, Dungeon Explorer 2 and Jim power.

A tough choice indeed. There are so many classics to choose out of from this list.

As much as I love Dragon Spirit and its soundtrack, along with a few others such as Keith Courage in Alpha Zones and Alien Crush, the only game I felt that was the best out of all of them was Blazing Lazers. It truly is an incredible game for its time, and even had some very nice voice clips. I remember watching DigiHatesMakingName's video on the first five levels of Gunhed and being dazzled by the gameplay.

It had much had deserved this honor. If this was based on the favorite instead, my vote would probably be different.

Blazing Lazers, being a SHMUP, already pwns everything. Being arguably the best SHMUP on the list, it wins by a landslide.

Blazing Lazers all the way. The music and graphics for this game were amazing for 1989 standards. The game totally rocks out.

turbofan1

I couldn't really go with any of the arcade ports, the sports games,or the two sega games.I went with Blazing Lasers by default.Or was Blazing Lasers A arcade port?.Anyways thats what I went with.

Beld VanGuard

Blazing Lazers/Gunhed got my vote

Was tough between that and Military Madness tho

i'm kind of disappointed about how many of you don't appreciate the awesomeness of the 2nd to none R-Type

Oh I assure you, I love R-type to death. I think it, Raiden, 1942, and Skyshark were the first 4 shooters I spent forever on as a child.
However, Blazing Lazers has just so much batshit insane weaponry, it's hard not to love it. R-type was all about insane levels and the coolest bosses ever to grace the screen in 10 years. BL was all about the most insane weapons in any shooter ever. I have yet to meet a game that can equal the craziness of your weaponry in that.

turbokon

I voted blazing lazer.  I think it's one of the must impressive shooter released on a hucard in terms of graphic and sound, although I never beated it and to this day don't quite understand the weapon system.

Ok I finally voted: Motoroader. Even though I think Blazing Lazers is the best game on that list and came so close to voting for it, I had to go with Motoroader becuase it's multiplayer makes it more fun to me and that Blazing Lazers was already taking a killer lead in the polls.
Quote from: TurboXray on 01/02/2014, 09:21 PMAdding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).
