Not a lot to choose from, but it was the first year.

pick the best one.

Tatsujin

very very hard. still can't decide between bikkuri, kato and victory run. the kung fu was damn good as well for its time!!

Sega does what Nintendon't, but only NEC does better than both together!^^
<Senshi> Tat's i'm going to contact the people of Hard Off and open a store stateside..

CrackTiger

I voted for Kato chan & Ken chan. I would've picked Bikkuriman World, but it retains the cheapness and quarter stealing bs of the arcade.

Kato and Ken all the way. The game set the mood for all the weird-ass PC releases yet to come.

Bikkuri for me.  Sure it's tough and a bit cheap, but that's also it's arcade-esgue charm.

Bikkuri. Dude, Wonderboy trumps all.

spenoza

I'm logging a protest vote in the form of The Kung Fu. I kinda thing all these games are sucky.

guyjin

shanghai would be a better protest vote, since there are people who actually like the kung fu.

nat

Quote from: BonksRevenge on 02/23/2008, 02:51 PMIf Bikki whatever was the first wonderboy then i've played that one too.
The second, Wonderboy in Monsterland as it's known in the US.

OldRover

The Kung Fu for sure. All of these games were pretty primitive, but at least The Kung Fu had a killer sprite engine and is probably the only "garbage storm" game to ever be released on a console.
Turbo Badass Rank: Janne (6 of 12 clears)
Conquered so far: Sinistron, Violent Soldier, Tatsujin, Super Raiden, Shape Shifter, Rayxanber II

nat

Shanghai got no love, which is funny, because that would've been my pick if Wonderboy wasn't an option. I can't believe people don't like Shanghai.

Keranu

Wow, finally a poll where J.J. & Jeff / Kato & Ken Chan is in the lead! You I know I voted for it, as usual 8) . Then again I have a feeling if the Japanese version was the same as the American version, then it would've got less votes.

Ug.  Those choices make my head hurt.  It's safe to say I would not have bought the system in 1987.

Turbo D

I voted Bikuriman World. That game is bad-Ass!

Actually I do love Shanghai. I used to play this version Windows back in the mid-90's all the time and the PCE version has some amazingly catchy tunes.

I totally agree with you Joe.  These games (for the most part) leave a taste on my tongue worse than a mouth full of flaming impossamole or whatever the freak that game is.

haha..you ignorants!! those games were the killers back then.

the kung fu = bigger sprites than many arcade games ever showed up with until that time.
bikkuri world = 1:1 100% perfect arcade wonderboy II (except of some of the sprites).
victory run = best console racer released until that time.
kato & ken = a pure living game, great dynamic, fast, funny jokes and something completely new for its time.
shanghai = if you like that kind the game, it's fun.

I agree with Tatsujin. For a three month period of games during the launch of a new system in 1987, it was a pretty impressive line up all considered.

A small list, but I have chosen Kato Chan & Ken Chan. After all, it is supposedly a very humorous game, and it was available in the US as the "lovable" J.J. and Jeff game for the TurboGrafx-16. The other titles, including The Kung Fu which came in second, are not as remotely interesting or even of high quality.

I am wondering, too, Guyjin, if you were doing something special with the results from these "Turbo/PC Engine Game of the Year" topics? A thought like this had occurred in my mind :P.

No, that's what I voted for the day I posted that I thought they were all pretty meh games.  I just neglected to say what I voted for.  Even in a turd sandwich, you might be able to find one good bite if you are really pressed to find it.

I do wish though that the game took up more of the screen.  It seems like it could have been a LOT better.

It's a 1:1 port of the arcade version. That's how the arcade is. It's up there with R-Type for arcade-correctness if you forget they changed the boss characters.

Even the music is 1:1.

I'm not blaming the port.  I did think it was close to the arcade version though, I didn't know it was 1:1 though.

It really is, except for the bosses. It might be the closest port in terms of arcade accuracy out of the system's entire game library.

Sinistron

Bikurriman Worlds ends where Dragon's Curse begins- so that's my pick.
