Very, very hard poll.

But I had to go for Monster Lair (Wonderboy III) since I have a special place in my heart for that series, and I've probably played it more than all the rest.

Frikkin' Splash Lake, hands down. There are some great games on that list but I think Splash Lake tops them all. It is one of the best action-puzzle games I've ever played. It's a unique concept and an excellent implementation with a challenge level that scales pretty darn smoothly. It gets hard, very hard, without seeming completely cheap. Every victory in the higher levels is hard won and worth it.

Besides, that, the graphics, animation, and sound are all very appropriate and well-done.

I think this game has all the spit and polish necessary to make it the best on the list.

My runner-up choices are:
Buster Brothers
Ys III (a personal fave of mine)

Even though I picked Wonderboy, Splash Lake is a definite runner-up. Great game.

I'm pretty sure Sherlock Holmes 2 would work on the pussified, non-super CD-ROM (known as Average CD-ROM or Mediocre CD-ROM).

Agreed on all points, but you forgot to mention the awesomeness of Ostrich Theater.

It really comes down to what I'm in the mood for.

#1 Ys I & II (epic, great soundtrack, but the lack of replay value brings this down...)

#2 Monster Lair (love this game! and the music is great! 2-player co-op rocks!)

#3 Valis III (I have a soft spot for this game. I really dig it. Music should have been better.)

Runner-up:
Buster Bros. (2 player co-op rocks!)
Splash Lake (peer pressure!)
Valis II (for the music alone!)

Ys 1-2 is obviously the best but Ys 3 is my personal favorite. After that, I'm partial to Last Alert.

I just can't agree with this

. I think Ys Book I & II has by far the best replay value of any other RPG I've played. I've played through that game so many times and in close periods to each other and it's refreshing every time. I know it's still an RPG and a RPG obviously won't have the same kind of replay value as a more simple genre, but I wouldn't deduct any kind of "score", if you will, off Ys because that's just the genre for 'ya.

I agree. I've played through Ys 1 and 2 many times. Playing that game is like having a nice cup of tea with Yuzo Koshiro on a Sunday afternoon.

Yeah Ys Book I&II definitely! It has to be hands down the most amazing experience I've ever had playing a video game. It's what I paid 300 dollars for the Turbo CD back in the day, and Ys didn't disappoint. The intro music, the game play, the story, and the fact that I can play it over and over again since I've had it for the past 18 years, makes it my number one Turbo CD game! It's actually my favorite game on any console/PC. I like seeing Monster Lair in the list. That would have been my second choice, and it would actually not be that far behind Ys Book I&II. I loved the arcade version when I was younger and that game was also another reason I wanted a Turbo CD add on. My brother and my friends have also stayed up to wee hours of the morning when we were younger playing Buster Bros. Another fine game. Ys though is by far my most favorite!

I see a lot of love for Monster Lair here. I like it, but of the eleven games on the list that I've played, I think I'd rank it tenth. This list has some mighty games on it. Even the one I'd put in last, Final Zone II, isn't horrible or anything.

Agreed 100%. It's always fun to revisit the story and listen to the tunes, though sometimes I use the experience cheat to speed things up a bit.

I got that disc for the first time recently. It's actually kind of cool, but definitely not a "game." The program seems a little glitchy but that's OK since it's got all sorts of cool facts on dinosaurs. The SNES and Genesis obviously couldn't handle the amount of awesome packed onto that disc.

Haha, no. That, Jack Nicklaus, and The Addams Family haven't managed to find their ways into my collection yet. Once they do, I think there's a good chance Final Zone II will escape from the bottom spot.

Sorry, but I have to wait at least a few months (6 months - year) before I reply an (A)RPG, so Monster Lair has had infinitely more replay value for me, while Ys I & II has the magical, epic, special place in my heart because it hasn't been overplayed.

Judging across genres is hard, but a shoot-em-up will always have more replay value for me.

Anyhow, I voted for Ys Book I and II but I salute whoever voted for Buster Bros. There was an extra space stage if you started the game from stage 1. I'm not sure what other versions of the game had this extra stage?

I voted Ys III... Ys II was a total chore and bore for me at the end in solomon shrine. I can see why Ys I + II is so popular and so well loved though. Great soundtrack... but I had much more fun with Ys III.

I have never played the Valis games, Monster Lair, or Magical Dinosaur tour...

I chose Cosmic Fantasy 2. Strictly because of the fond memories I have of that game in grade school. This was the first RPG I ever played outside of NES(cause I finally got a turbo cd for christmas) and spent my birthday money a few months later on Cosmic Fantasy 2. I remember not being able to wait to get home evry day so I can play this game. It remains to this day on my top 10 RPG faves for all systems.
2nd place:Y's Book 1&II
3rd place: most definately Monster lair

Honorable Mentions: Last Alert,Y's III, Exile, and Vasteel.
Too good to forget and deserves credit:Buster Bros.,Valis 2 & 3

Its cool that Monster Lair seems to be gaining more respect as time goes by. Its really fun as a 2 player game, even if the other player isn't a "gamer".

Yeah, Monster Lair has never really been a game that folks have gushed over, at least, not the folks I have seen online.

There are so many parts in ML where both players and jumping all over the place and going crazy: trying to get power-ups, barely avoiding death, realizing that the "bottom path" is usually the stinkier route, etc.

Plus, I think the music really fits the game. I just wish I hadn't heard all the songs 20,000 times already. The final stage, and the ending credit music are the only tracks that I haven't "overlistened" to.

My favorite thing about Monster Lair is the weaponry. The weapons themselves are really cool, and there are so many on-the-fly decisions to make regarding which one to pick up and how to implement it (as Steve has noted before, sometimes a change in Turbo-switch setting brings about the best results, which is an awesome element).

A hard one here but I had to go with Y's Book I & II. Those games still are awesome today. Can play them over and over again and I see that some people feel the same way as I do.
