10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I found a pair of these babies for really cheap the other day.  The previous owner opened the box in such a way
that they can be used, and the blister pack is fully intact (except for a nasty crease).  Anyway, the sticker is the
only indication that these are meant for the Darius games.  The actual instruction manual is just the generic Sony
printed crap telling you not to wear them for more then 15 mins.  I believe these are the same glasses that came
with Darius Alpha.  Anyone know if these things were sold as a normal retail product?

I only have Super Darius and Darius Plus and the 3D effect is really cool.  They give you a real perception of depth
between the background layers and the sprites.  The boss areas especially look truly great.  I need to get me a Super
Darius 2 (and someday Alpha).  Since these are just 3d-specs they should work with other games.  I'll do some testing
if I ever get some real game time (Working in Japan yeilds lots of games, but zero time to play them.  :-# )

nice found. are you willig to sell it? :) let me know the price, if^^

btw. the 3D effex is called pulfrich-effect (named after its discoverer carl pulfrich) and later renamed to nuoptix and will work with any such glasses on any games which shows parallaxes.

it simply delays one eyes picture to the brain by darken it, so the brain receives a different picture of both eyes of the same moment which simulates the 3D effect, since the brain puts the two pictures together.

Yeah, back in the 80s Coke gave these away in twelve packs so we could all watch some Super Bowl ad in 3D. They work with pretty much anything that has has a decent depth of field combined with panning.

My favorite fake 3D is the system that makes red images come forward, and blue images look further in the back. Its something that was sold with Valiant comics 15 years ago or so, but its easy to find all sorts of stuff laying around the house that will produce a good 3D effect with these glasses. Its also really easy to create original works.

LOL - I got an old pair of sunglasses and took one of the lenses out. Seems to work with the dark lens over the left eye.

Do you mean anaglyph, like this picture I took which use the red and blue glasses:

Red eye is on the left.  Blue on the right.

Cool!  Now upload a video of Super Darius while wearing the glasses!!!!!! :D

What's so Super Darius about these besides the packaging?  :-s
Forgive me, my brain is on par with the Bubble System.

No, the stuff I'm talking about works with glasses that are some sort of prismatic clear stuff, not red and blue. Somehow it makes things that are red look closer, and things that are blue fade into the background. This way making a 3D image for these glasses is pretty easy; color the stuff in the foreground more reddish, and use a lot of blue in the background.

Awesome find, man! I was really interested when I first learned of their existence a few years back. Thanks to tatsujin for his great post in this thread for explaining how the trick works (haven't heard of that one)!

These glasses are probably the rarest "pce thing" I own.  For now, I will be keeping them.  If I do need to sell them some day you'll be the first
to know though.  Thanks for the information, I need to try Gate of Thunder and Ninja Spirit with these things.

Rumour has it that some of the levels in Darkwing Duck have a lot of parallax scrolling as well :).

Seriously, though, I've never heard of this "Pulfrich-Effect" before and I think it is pretty darn kool.

You know, I recall looking at a picture of Shapeshifter, before it was released, while wearing 3D glasses, & I swear that spider boss looked 3D.  But, that was...what, 15 years ago?

Looking at the wicked forest parallax in Shape Shafter with 3D effects would be rad!

found an interessting article about that product:

http://www.btinternet.com/~sagat/not.htm

QuoteThe specs reads "Sony Handicam" which makes it a non-true PC-Engine product. Someone might have found it funny to add a Darius sticker with the words Hibaihin but I wouldn't mind adding this to my collection.

Yes they are Sony made, even the included instruction manual is all Sony.  I'd assume NEC Avenue just
bought some from Sony and added their sticker.  They were a free promo afterall.  If you look at Adol's
copy (he has the letter and bubble-wrap mailer) on ASSEMBLER you can see the glasses are exactly the
same.  However his don't have the box.  Maybe previous owner threw it out?  This is why I'm very curious
to know if these things were ever sold by NEC Avenue in retail stores, or if they only came with copies of Alpha.

Hmm I suppose its time I register at ASSEMBLER and stop just lurking it

These glasses would only work in games that scrolled horizontally to the left (like Darius or maybe Gates of Thunder).

Tatsujin

no they work in any directions.

If your right eye is delayed while scrolling right, the 3D effect would be ass-backwards.
