He's up there with Tom Waits as one of the greatest unknown songwriters. Such sad news. Listening to his most recent album, it sounds like he knew the end was near and was ready to go. RIP. :(

Quote from: Psycho Punch on 11/11/2016, 06:43 PMBump!

I've read the following books:

The Dogs of War
The Odessa File (Forsyth)
The Man in the High Castle (Philip K. *****)
fahrenheit 451 (Bradbury)
The Puppet Masters (Heinlein)
Childhood's End (Clarke)

I love using my imagination to "view" the scenes described on books, so you can imagine how much fun it was to read Childhood's End. As far as I'm concerned this is the best book ever written :o, I really need to get more into Science Fiction if the books are as good as Clarke's novel.

I'm now reading Fist of God (yes Forsyth again). I still like Forsyth but his books feel so pedestrian after reading Childhood's End...
Nice! I recently re-read Farenheit 451 and then followed it up with Bradbury's A Pleasure to Burn.

I recently re-read Ender's Game and I think it might have been better the second time around.

I'm currently near the end of Statesman, the fifth (and final) book in the Bio of a Space Tyrant series by Piers Anthony. The series started strong, but this book is really dragging...

I wondered if that was too obscure a reference. :) Now I want to watch Star Trek IV again!

...and I'm always up for watching Kung Pow. That movie never gets old.

Civ 4 is amazing. I haven't tried 5 or 6 yet because I still have 4 (with the Beyond the Sword expansion) installed.

Civ 6 looks pretty impressive so I'm sure I'll pick it up at some point.

Speaking of Civ games, I found this at a nearby thrift store earlier this week. So many minis! Now I just need to come up with friends to play it with. :p

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 11/05/2016, 12:24 AMThe first machine I ever had was a Casio PT-1 exactly like the one in this video:
I've been looking around for the perfect keyboard for my kid (still under 2) and I've come to realize this is probably it. It has to be something with no "wrong" settings. If its easy to fuck up with a certain button then he's eventually going to hit it (learned this from experience). I think his first keyboard may be the same as my first keyboard?

Shame I don't have it anymore. Like everyone else in the 80s, at all ages and income levels, I got a PCM synth and literally forgot where my old analog toy went. Now I need to go to like...eBay. I don't know if music shops even take in gear that low end. I think it was $30 in 1984 or whenever.
I saw Jill Sobule play once and I'm pretty sure all she has was one of those little keyboards. It was such a fun show! Man, I haven't thought of her in ages. But I remember that keyboard!

I'm really digging what you're creating, Zeta!

I'm not even in the same galaxy as you and Arkhan, but I've had this keyboard since the mid-late 90s and now I'm teaching my 8yr old son how to play on it. In college (late 90s) I used it to create soundtracks for 3d animations I worked on.

I've been tinkering a lot with my DS Lite, now that I have a flashcard that can obey. :P

IMG
IMG

It's an Ace3ds plus card and cost just under $10 shipped from HK. It can play most (all?) DS games, but the magic for me is the emulators included. It comes with emulators for NES/SNES/Genesis/OBEY/GB/GBC/Neo Geo, but really all I've done is obey on it since it arrived. The screen is really nice, though sound emulation is not great. Redbook audio is perfect but sampled sounds dont seem to work right, or at all.

I may be one of the few, but I enjoyed playing through the first Evolution on the Dremcast bitd. But once I got my hands on Skies of Arcadia, I totally lost interest in getting Evolution's sequel.

Just recently I found out that both the first and second game were compiled together as Evolution Worlds for the Gamecube and I found a copy for under $10 and had to pick it up.

IMG

I'm only an hour or so in now, but I like what they've done so far. It seems they've abridged the first episode quite a bit to get people to experience the second episode. The graphics look great on the Gamecube via s-video.

Quote from: OldRover on 07/09/2016, 08:42 PMI am about to start a mass emailing for the game to confirm shipping addresses... it will take a few hours to complete. Once I have back enough responses, we are going to start mailing demo discs to everyone who preordered.
I've been away for awhile and am slowly getting caught up with all that I've missed these past few months.

Progress looks good!

Did you send out this mass email? I preordered (back in 2014!) but didn't get any message over the summer about demo discs. I just want to make sure I haven't accidentally fallen off a list or something. :)

EDIT: PM sent!

I recently spent the day running my 8 yr old son and wife through the starter adventure that came in the 4th edition red box. It was a hoot, everyone loved it and wish we all had more time to play more. Man I had forgotten how much time is involved in preparing a campaign!

Holy moly this thread is awesome. It should be awarded a sticky.

When I lived in Fayetteville, NC, the 2nd & Charles there had a pretty sweet selection of classic games, but not like that! I picked up most of my Genesis library from that place because every Genesis game was $5. And they had Earthbound for $8. I moved away a couple of years ago, but I bet they've caught wind of the madness going on in classic game collecting and have adjusted their prices accordingly.

Yep, that's the one, now that you mention it! That's not generally the sort of music I listen to and found myself drained when listening to the entire album in one sitting, but once we've moved to a more permanent location and I can unpack all my CDs, I'll definitely give it some more time. :)

Ha! Lucky you. I actually left their newest disc in my cd player when I traded my car in. I could have kicked myself.

What album did you pick up?
It's actually packed up right now, but I remember it having a dark purple or blue face.

I'm so excited to see progress on this! We are one week away from the two-year anniversary of my pre-order!

Yesterday was a Turbo day for me. I spent a good chunk of time playing Gradius, Air Zonk (which I finally beat!), Devil's Crush, and Super Star Soldier. Man I suck at SSS.

Today I remembered how bad I am at Street Fighter II (once upon a time I was half decent, I swear!) and then played some Soldier Blade. Such an amazing soundtrack!

Quote from: Mathius on 05/28/2016, 12:20 AMInteresting story....I picked up Goonies 1 for my Twin Fami at MGC this year. I always kinda wanted the game but wasn't prepared for the unexpected memories that came flooding back. Having thought I had never played the game before previously (only Goonies 2) I started to remember playing Goonies 1 on a Playchoice 10 at a local grocery store in the mid 80s. We would go there every morning before school for donuts with my mom and I never failed to bug her for quarters so I could play Metroid and...this game apparently. For years I've known that Goonies 1 only saw release in the arcades but I never put 2 and 2 together. I just assumed that it was Goonies 2 I was remembering. ...Such a nice reunion. :)
This story warms my cockles.

It wasn't until I recently picked up a 150-in-1 NES cart that I realized a Goonies 1 game actually existed. I always thought the NES game was a spiritual sequel to the movie.

I'm pretty sure I've used the software on an old Asus Netbook with Windows XP on it and have gotten it to work, and I know I've used the software on Windows 8 successfully, so I'm thinking you should be able to use your netbook with Windows 7.

Mine sometimes has an issue erasing the rom so I have to go through the process a few times to get it to tranfser a new rom over properly. Honestly, I haven't used mine in awhile either because I have since picked up an Everdrive which holds *everything*. :/

Quote from: ginoscope on 05/04/2016, 05:17 PMI beat Cosmic Fantasy 2 in November of last year so no way I was going to play that again.  It's a good game but man some of those battles drag out towards the end of the game.  Especially the parts of the game when you only have one character.  It takes ages to kill enemies lol.

I love RPGs and am typically patient with the classic ones but this one almost defeated me lol.
Yeah, I remember the last time I played all the way through it, back in the late 90s, I was so done with the game I sold it thinking I'd never want to play it again. But time heals all wounds and I started itching to give it another go a few years ago. I received it as a Secret Santa gift and have started it a couple of times since, but fizzled out before completing it. I think this time it's going to stick, though!

I picked up an X-Arcade Dual Joystick along with a bunch of console adapters during a Black Friday deal 3 or 4 years ago and have been very happy with it.

x-arcade-dual-joystick.jpg
http://shop.xgaming.com/products/x-arcade-dual-joystick-usb-included

I know there are joystick elitists out there that think these are shit, but I guess I'm not enough of a hardcore gamer to get it. They come with a lifetime guarantee and when I had issues with one of the switches, they sent me enough spare parts to pretty much rebuild it if I ever need to.
