My opinion... I think Hillary will win this cycle but she will only be a one term president.  She's about the worst candidate the Democrats could have picked and I think ultimately it will cost their party.  They really alienated a lot of new younger voters with the whole Bernie Sanders affair.  I know so many young people who really connected with Sanders over economic issues like income inequality, prohibitive cost of health care and higher education.  These young people aren't stupid.  The ones I know are mostly engineering students and are surprisingly informed about all these issues.  The feeling now is that the system really is rigged and that we really dont have power.  The Democrats had the chance to basically get a large swathe of new voters into their fold which would not only effect the presidency but countless down ballot contests.  Truly the Democrats fumbled this one... BAD.

And then there's the Donald Trump phenomenon.  I think the Donald Trump campaign "success" has revealed a side of America that is quite honestly appalling.  I really cant see how anyone can justify this guy.  Its extremely clear that he is a narcissist who has no problem demeaning women and minorities.  I mean really he is the epitome of the white male superiority paradigm.  His popularity brings into the open the fact that there are a lot of Americans who align with his values.  That is the appalling part.  I really had hoped that this country had moved beyond racism and sexism but I can see that both issues are alive and well.  Few admit that they're racist or sexist but this campaign has given many an opportunity to be comfortable in their beliefs and show them publicly.  When I lived in Tennessee I discovered that racism was very much still a thing but I thought it was a local issue.  Now with the Trump campaign I see that the problem is widespread.  This isn't to say all of Trumps supporters are racist or women-demeaning but his campaign has appealed to those that are.  They've come out of the woodwork in numbers far greater than I would have ever imagined.

Here's the part that really gets me.  The evangelical vote.  I am a church goer myself but I find myself in the minority amongst Christians being a progressive.  How the evangelicals can justify a president trump confounds me.  Usually the answer is that he's not Hillary.  That's no answer.  The attempts to justify Trump are offensive.  Evangelicals on the whole seem to be stuck in the Conservative camp over a few issues:  gay marriage, abortion etc.  Issues that rarely are legislated on and only have a small impact on society.  Economic issues harm and kill far more people than abortion or gay marriage ever will.  I saw this comic a while back and to me it really rings true.

IMG

The rest of the world is watching all of this.  I don't know the exact reactions but I'm guessing its a mix between laughter, sadness and disgust.  Really America, this is the best we could do?  Of the 280 million or so people we have living here these two individuals are what rose to the top?  I want to believe we are better, rather I have to believe we are better.

That wouldn't be a bad system SoZ.  Some dealerships have formed "diagnosis teams" which are just there to take care of particularly challenging diagnosis problems.  Once they determine what they think needs to be done they give it back to the tech or team where it originated and they perform the fix.  I pushed for these sorts of arrangements for a long time but it was always opposed by the high hour turners.  They didn't want to pay a portion of their hours to support a diagnosis team like that.  Their system of avoiding diag problems and just churning the hours was threatened by such a system.  Management didn't like the idea much either since they were concerned with individual technician productivity numbers.

Sadly some of my most satisfying days as a technician were solving super challenging problems.  Though one car got me really good...

2011 BMW X5 with the twin turbo V8.  Had an intermittent stumble and eventually would post a misfire fault.  I went through EVERYTHING on this car.  By the end we had done the following to it:

Approximate costs shown:
Spark Plugs  $400
All Fuel Injectors (the pricey direct injection units!)  $1600
Both High Pressure Fuel Pumps $1400
All Intake seals $400
All Ignition coils $900
Cylinder compression and leakdown $700
Engine Computer $1400
Software Update / Reprogramming (3 times) $600
Dropped engine and performed carbon cleaning on the valves (You had to drop the engine for this) $2600

All that at it still wasn't fixed.  BMW was stumped, I was stumped.  Finally we pulled the cylinder head on the bank that had the fault.  Sent it off to BMW for analysis.  They sent us a new one back and said the injector bore on the cylinder that was misfiring was out of tolerance.  Apparently when the injector fired it was pushing itself too far back up its bore and then not delivering the fuel correctly at that position.  So basically $10,000 in repairs and then finally needed a cylinder head (a $6800 part plus another $1700 labor)  BMW ended up covering all of it since they couldn't help figure it out until the end.

That twin turbo V8 is easily the hardest BMW engine to work on except maybe the diesel 6 cylinder.  That car broke me.  No one had ever seen that issue before though.  Apparently its becoming common on those engines now.  Though I can say I'm super quick at taking everything apart on that engine now.  I only took the intakes apart maybe 40 times during that diagnosis.  It took us two months to fix it.

Dune 2 was a little less refined than Command and Conquer but still very awesome.  The only gripe you might encounter if you go and play it is the fact that your cursor doesnt do everything automatically.  Like to attack something you dont just click the unit then click the target, you have to click the unit, click attack from a menu to the right and then click the target.  Or if you're a boss you use keyboard short cuts, A for attack, M for move, s for stop etc.

Definitely check it out though.  Its very good, as is its somewhat remake Dune 2000.

My ten game history, though basically the games I loved and still love.

1. Great American Cross Country Road Race (Atari 800) - 1989 Age 5, used to love this one...
IMG

2. Civilization (PC) - 1990 Age 6, used to watch my dad play for HOURS, finally just started playing myself
IMG

3. Powerhouse (PC) - 1995 Age 11, Horrible horrible game, but the premise of it... providing electricity to the world using alternative energy sources.  This game basically inspired me to what my life's interest / goal is.  (I want to get into alternative energy research)
IMG

4. Heroes of Might and Magic (PC) - 1995 Age 11, one of my favorite strategy series period.
IMG

5. Super Mario 64 and Waverace 64 together (N64) - 1996 Age 12, These two basically introduced me to 3d gameplay, I was blown away at the time.
IMG

6. Final Fantasy 7 (PS1) - 1997 Age 13, I'd never played this sort of RPG before.  I absolutely loved it and it made me consider RPGs in the future
IMG

7. Banjo Kazooie (N64) - 1998 Age 14, Probably my favorite platformer ever.  I play this game through every single year around Christmas time
IMG

8. Skies of Arcadia (DC) - 2000  Age 16, I didn't think I'd ever find an RPG I liked more than FF7, but this one I did...  I still go back and play this one plenty.
IMG

9. Civilization 4 (PC) - 2005  Age 21, I played this one with my dad and still do to this day.
IMG

10. Super Mario 3d World - 2013  Age 30, This game is the first new game in a LONG time to give me that giddy little kid feeling.

Heres what you can do....  build one of these out of some wires or whatever.  Connect it to a TV or some amplified speakers or whatever and use the "probe" end of the wire to test each point along the audio circuit.  You should be able to hear the system sound using the probe and figure out where it is stopping.  If it stops at a pin on an amp and doesnt come out of it then you know the problem is there with the amp, either its bad or the power / ground isnt there or whatever.

I'll just leave this one here....

Actually maybe I should explain...  N64, ahhh those were the days.  In 1996 I was 12 years old, aka perfect little kid video gaming age.  At school we would watch Channel 1 in the mornings and there would be commercials for the N64...  When I saw Mario 64 and Waverace 64 and the whole concept that you could "go anywhere and any direction"  to my 6th grade person that was phenomenal.  Keep in mind up to that point my gaming was limited to NES, SNES and Genesis (and PC... but that's a different story)  So I had never really experienced a real 3D game outside of maybe Fzero.

So Christmas of 96 passed and around February of 97 I was calling every used game store in town (Game Force, Buy Back Games etc in the Denver area for those who remember) to find a cheaper "used" N64.... Finally I found one at Game Force Lakewood (right next to Casa Bonita iirc...)  I bought the system, mario 64 and waverace 64.  I was soooo excited to get home and play.

Got it home, hooked it up to the parents "big screen" TV.  It was one of those old school rear projection monsters.  It was gaming bliss.  I was not disappointed in the least.  The new 3d control and experience was so awesome I was in heaven.

Later games came along like Goldeneye and Starfox which my friends and I played the crap out of.  Literally there would be 10 of us in a living room taking turns playing multiplayer Goldeneye.  Later on I got Banjo Kazooie and that game stuck with me as my favorite N64 game.  Excellent music, fun gameplay and even compared to modern graphical standards I still think it looks really great.  I play it every year around Christmas time.

So yeah, my N64 love is not founded so much on the actual merits of the system but on the fact that it hit me at just the right impressionable age.  I noticed someone mentioned PC games above.  I was an avid PC gamer before I got into any consoles.  I always felt they were different experiences so I never remember comparing consoles to PC games.  Games like Dune 2, Civilization, Star Control 2, Heroes of Might and Magic etc etc were PC games and of course were superior to anything consoles could make.  With regard to the Goldeneye debate.... I had not really played much other than Doom or maybe Dark Forces so I didnt have too much to compare to when it came to FPS games at the time.

Speaking of Dark Forces again...  When I was a weee little one playing that game I used to get totally freaked out by those Dianogas in the third level.  Creeping through dark sewers and randomly seeing one of those eyes pop up in the distance only to have it show up behind you attacking you a second later!  Gahh!!

This is what I used on the PS3....

IMG

Unfortunately, the PS4 does not support this controller so I've had to learn to use the controller....  its a hard journey.  My biggest issue is this though....  Your right analog stick is your look control...  So you use it to aim etc.  But to do things like crouch, reload etc you have to take your thumb OFF of the stick to hit the button.  With that mouse keyboard thingy I can keep moving / aiming while pushing the button for reload etc with my other hand.  Additionally I feel like my hand is more precise than my thumb.  Also, with the mouse keyboard setup you have more fingers on functions at any given time.  With a controller at least two fingers per hand are wasted wrapped around the handle.  Mouse keyboard you might waste your small finger on your right hand.

The year... 1998 or so...  location... Littleton, Colorado:
Here I was, a nerdy kid just starting high school.  I had my fancy TI-85 calculator.  We didn't have internet at home so what we did was use a 56k modem to dial up network to my dad's office.  This netted me an actual connection speed about about 10k or so.  It was dreadfully slow but it was enough to access sites such as ticalc.org to download games for my calculator.  After spending some $80 or so on a TI Graph Link cable, my calculator gaming career began.

I took my fancy TI-85 and downloaded a "system backup" image to it which contained Usgard, an assembly "shell" that would allow me to run assembly programs.  After that I could download as many games as that little z80 based glory device could hold (which wasnt many).  So while the math teacher was rattling on about pythagorean theorums and area formulas for various polygons, I was striving to beat my high school in Ztetris or saving the galaxy in Zmercury.  Yeah sure I could have played game boy color or game gear for some portable fun, but I couldnt do that IN CLASS...

As time went on, I eventually picked up a TI-82 at a pawn shop and later a TI86 and TI89.  At one point I had four graphing calculators in my backpack.  Each had different games on them (well the TI82 had just one huge RPG on it that took all its memory)  Even at lunch I'd play games.  You have to remember, we werent exactly allowed to bring portable games to school and this was before cell phones had anything more than maybe Snake. (crazy I know!)

Here's a few screen shots of some of my favorites:

BomberBloke for the TI86.. excellent Bomberman clone:
IMG

Super Mario 86 for the TI86..  very good mario game that featured GRAYSCALE. I cant remember for sure, but it may have also been this game that had SOUND.  You had to get a 3.5 to 2.5mm headphones adapter and connect headphones to the link port.  Sound was very basic, but it was there!
IMG

Sqrxz for multiple.. a good mario clone
IMG

Ztetris for multiple.. a perfect Tetris game.  This one was available on pretty much all the TI calculators and supported two player via a calculator link cable!
IMG

Boulderdash for the TI-89..  I loved boulderdash on my Atari 800, so playing it on the go was great!
IMG

And now looking up some stuff on ticalc.org (which I might add looks the same as it did when I browsed there as a kid!)  some people have made some pretty awesome stuff in the last 10 years!

Even better mario games..
IMG
Zelda!!
IMG
Metroid!?
IMG
FZERO!!

And I also just learned that someone made a full out game boy emulator for the TI-89/92/92+ series.

As far as sound cards, my Gateway 2k P5-90 still has the SB16/AWE32 my dad put in way bitd (replaced an ensoniq soundscape IIRC) and my G2k P5-133 has a AWE64 card I put in maybe 10 years ago.

That site was created when this site went offline due to some technical issues (haxorz)  we didnt know if it'd come back up so that forum was made.  Not everyone reads over there.  I mostly just use it for the chatroom.  But you may find some threads of interest.

Regarding the PC-FX.... its the system that succeeded the PC Engine line.  Came out in 1995 only in Japan. (i think it was 1995)  Its not backwards compatible with PC engine games and the majority of its games are Japanese text heavy.  Dont consider it unless you're just a crazy hardcore collector or like neat obscure items.  There are a handful of games that can be played an enjoyed without knowing Japanese.  Its hard to say if its worth the price of admission, most will say its not.  Sadly there is only one shooter for it :(  But there are a few others that are playable, and there has been more buzz lately about some possible homebrew action.  There are also some games that are being or have been translated.  Most notable is the dating sim / hentai game Welcome to Pia Carrot.  Expect to pay $150 or so for a PC-FX system.

As some of you know, thesteve and I have been working on making up some nice new region mod chips for these consoles.  Well the boards and parts have all arrived, and I have started to assemble chips!  I've tested these in a US Turbo Duo and a US Turbo Express.  They work perfect!

These chips will work with a SPDT slide switch just like the other IC based region mods.  These require that you cut 8 of the connections going to the hucard slot and run wires to them.  If you don't feel comfortable soldering very small connections, you should probably have this done by someone experienced.

Optionally, a second control chip board can be used to run the mod 'switchless'.  By 'switchless' we mean there will be no switch mounted externally on the device.  This was designed for the portable systems so one doesn't have to cut up their Express or GT (or maybe even LT ) to perform a region switch.  In this setup, the original region is default and the second region is selected by holding the select button while powering the unit on.  NOTE: This doesnt not work on console systems!  It still requires a button press on boot which cannot be done on consoles like it can on portables!

The pricing on these chips will be as follows:

Region Mod Chip   $18 shipped
Switchless Control Board   $4 extra

If you need a switch or wires with your chip, let me know!

I wrote up an installation manual that can be downloaded here (~15mb)  http://www.mediafire.com/?ad5obr3lls4usm3
Please send me a PM if you are interested!

Dimensions on the chips are 0.70" x 0.850" by 0.15" for the main chip, and 0.70" x 0.65" x 0.15" for the switchless control chip.

It seems that none of this hardware is safe from leaking capacitors as some of these Super CD-ROM² units have started to exhibit issues relating to failing capacitors.  Note that both RF shields must be removed and the laser assembly must be removed before all the capacitors can be accessed. Below is a chart mapping all the capacitors in the Super CD-ROM² unit.

The laser installed in the Super CD-ROM² is the Sony KSS-210B and the unit has the same 5 adjustment pots like a Duo unit.

UPDATE:

Some units have an additional 100µF cap installed right above the 4 sided Sony chip next to the 22µF surface mount caps beneath the laser assembly.  Others just have an empty pad without a cap.

Also, the RF shields MUST be reinstalled for this unit to work properly.  It looks like it links some grounds to one another.

Thanks once again to Red Ghost for the chart format!

I recently replaced the capacitors on two of these units.  There is no difference as far as the capacitors go on the N1 (PCE) vs the N10 (TG16).  Below is a chart outlining what capacitors you will need and where they will go.  You will also need a security bit to open these PACs.  Its the same bit as used on Duos.
