@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Might be a silly question, but can you not just go the RGB route directly via a scart cable?
#152
There would be a couple of stages to my sell off. First ask friends/relatives if they want any of it, then to the forums to sell what I could, finally ebay.

If I was going the ebay route only I would sell the rare/more expensive games off singularly and the cheaper games just bundle together or with the machines.

The 'pull out' method isn't always the safest way though...

This is starting to sound even better :D

Just for the record...are you a democrat?

Quote from: pulstar on 06/02/2014, 03:21 AMIt's not as unrealistic as it sounds. You *could* emulate the CD operation by using a FPGA and having it communicate with a SD card to load a bin/cue file. This would be a hell of a lot of work for someone (or a team) and would require production of the emulation board to connect to the system (probably by the EXT port). I'm sure there was a project doing just this for the PSX.
There is a finished one for the Sega Dreamcast. http://gdemu.wordpress.com/about/.
So it is indeed not unrealistic:)
Looks good. I didn't know people were working on SD Card replacements for other consoles. Would be cool to have one for the PC Engine as well.

My favourites that I've played so far are Battle Heat, Zenki, Zeroigar, Farland Story FX and Der Langrisser FX. I love the PC-FX version of Der Langrisser and if you like SRPGs you'll love it. As mentioned above, the PC-FX is very much an acquired taste so try before you buy is definitely the advice.

Quote from: BlueBMW on 06/22/2014, 06:35 PMWellers are good... I do really like my Hakko FX-888 tho ;)
The Hakko is really nice in my opinion as well.

Clodbuster, looks like you've found the area where the problem is. Hopefully it's just a dry joint and a quick reflow will sort you out.

That is very cheap for Osman. Seems to have a few repairs done (mask roms changed to eproms) as well.
#160
CPC? Pfft, the Game.com version was where it was at. Osman is tied with Fighters Megamix as the top game on the system.

Off-Topic / Re: World Cup
06/17/2014, 03:00 PM
The games start around 4pm in the UK and go on until about 1am. I've watched a few games (missed most of USA vs Ghana but knew the USA were going to win after about 10mins). I don't follow football generally but I do watch most of the world cup games that I can because it has a different atmosphere to most football games.

The Vectrex one was good but I can still only really play the Arcade version...not sure why?
#163
My opinion is that it was a response to the new systems already out and coming out (MD & SFC) but with the CD/SCD still performing well and the initial poor sales NEC decided, to hell with it, and let it die. It would have been awesome to have a DUO with SGX hardware as well. Probably would have been insanely expensive at the time but it would have made the system more appealing, to developers at least (and by extension, consumers).
#164
I still think the arcade version of Osman is the best
#165
I'm running all of my old systems through a Phillips CM8833 Mk II monitor. Really nice pictures on these old monitors especially through RGB.
#166
Count me in please. I must love playing terrible games :D

My story is kind of lame, but kind of unexpected if you live in the UK. I go to car boot sales regularly and generally get the usual Megadrive, Mastersystem, SNES, Gameboy games. One week about 5 years back there was a guy with a table full of satellite and cable smart cards. I flicked through the cards and towards the bottom I found two PC Engine Hu cards - Mr Heli and Power Drift - all on their own. Paid 50p each for them. That is the only time I found any PC Engine stuff in the wild other than at specialist retro game shops. It's a rubbish story but I was pleased with them :)
#169
At the moment I have been playing a lot of Super Star Solider and the stage 1 music is stuck in my head constantly. It's quite embarrassing to be standing in line for milk at the shop and a few hums slip out. I got quite a few funny looks. It's sets up the game well I think.

Parcelforce for their crazy 'admin' fees on international items that have a customs charge
#171
Looks interesting but to me the best part is what they are able to get the Neo Geo to do. Looks really impressive from the trailer.
#172
I agree with the comments above. A lot of work went into getting the comparison pictures so a link back or even a credit to where the sets were taken would have been all that was needed.

Quote from: ifkz on 05/29/2014, 11:56 AMI read every review I can about a game before purchase and Super Star Soldier was never mentioned in the same class as Air Zonk, Raiden, Blazing Lasers, R-Type, or the other AAA shooters in the TG16 USA library.
That's because it's in a higher class, all on it's own :D
#175
That sounds like a lot of pain/expense just to get over the border, and if you're only going to be saving a few bucks then there really isn't any point. Seems like they tightened up security a lot.
#176
I'm not too sure about borders etc in the US/Canada but wouldn't it make more sense to cross the border and send from inside Canada? Or is that too much hassle what with the border and finding a post office etc?
#177
My top 5 will not be totally conclusive as I've not played all SHMUPs but here goes:

Lords of Thunder
Spriggan
Super Star Soldier (Edges out Soldier Blade on nostalgia)
PC Denjin
Cotton.

Wow! Someone had the nerve to charge for that?

But the MultiMega/CDX didn't evolve naturally into the Megadrive from the point it was released, they ran concurrently. The PC Engine evolved into the Duo, partly because of the limitation of the Hucard format. I'm sure I read somewhere the PCE was supposed to be a CD based system from the outset but cost and availability stopped them from doing it? Can anybody confirm this (in other words, did I just dream this to try and fit my argument :D) ?
#181
I think the point you're missing (intentionally?) that is being raised is that the Duo became the PC Engine system from 1991 onwards. The PC Engine evolved into the Duo so it ceased to be an add on any longer, it was the system. This did not happen for the Mega CD, Jaguar CD, 64DD, Famicom Disk System etc.
#182
Congrats :D
#183
I think it was hacked in February or March but they only made it public yesterday...so yeah, somebody already has a credit card out in YOUR name, somewhere...and it isn't you.
#184
Go on then. Add me please :D
#185
Cool. Glad to see you got it working. Now enjoy some G'n'G.

Having a quick check over the pics there seems to be 3 traces that look suspect on the top HuC6270 (IC108) - pins 1,2 & 3. If you've got a DMM do a quick continuity check on those 3 traces and see if they are all good.
#187
First of all I'd clean the Hucard and the slot before doing anything else.

If it's neither of those it could possibly be a RAM or addressing issue. Do you have a logic probe or an oscilloscope? If you do get the datasheet for the ram and check all of them are enabled and the data lines are active.

I originally wanted to OBEY because of the pics of R-Type I saw in UK gaming mags. What spurred me into buying one was I got my first job and had some money finally :D I love Magical Chase, I don't actually own a copy of the game but I think the game is quite special, couple this with the small US print and the mystique that has built up over the years for it and that is the reason the prices are so high.

It happens all the time, someone sells it for $30 and somebody buys it. The next person tries his luck at $40, it gets sold. Everytime someone else sells they try a little higher and if it keeps selling the next seller puts the price up.
#189
Seeing as it's Dracula's castle and I'll get a kick out of playing Dracula X in there, I'll chip in $10 as well. $25 now, I think we're almost in the running for the purchase.
#190
Lots of good advice in this thread. Go with what Nulltard said. IMO the Duo is the best looking of the Duo/R/R-X models and having it recapped is a bonus as well.
#191
My absolute favourite time period as far as my gaming life goes is from about 89-98. This period encompassed my favourite consoles and my absolute favourite games. I think the games mags around that time had something to do with me enjoying that period more. There is something to say about anticipating the latest magazine with the latest news rather than having everything instantly available.
#192
If you're into traditional JRPGs I'd get Cosmic Fantasy 2 and Dragon Slayer. Both are really good in my opinion. Even though it's been mentioned above, Lords Of Thunder. One of my favourite games on the PC Engine.

I enjoyed BC Kid on the Amiga. Being quite young at the time and not having access to a PC Engine it was awesome. I remember looking at the PC Engine pics and imagining how cool it would be to actually play and the Amiga version filled that gap...until I played the PCE version.

Today (as it is a bank holiday in the UK) I'll be playing a little Neutopia and a little Dead Moon...Maybe a little of Bravely Default (I've been slacking a little on it recently).

Quote from: guest on 05/02/2014, 03:45 PMI can't suggest BOF IV to someone who didn't play 3 and doesn't have it available.
Why? I liked 4, possibly more than 3...

Breath of Fire is getting no love in here. I'd play Breath of Fire IV first. Didn't really like Chrono Cross much, but maybe I went into it with a 'This is supposed to be a Chrono Trigger sequel' mindset and I don't think I gave it a fair chance. So either BoFIV or Chrono Cross.
#197
I know nothing about the game, whether it's limited edtion etc, but I want one. :)
#198
I'm not a fan of wrestling games but I have played Fire Pro Wrestling 3 a few times and enjoyed it.

I do prefer carts to cds just because I don't have to be so careful (or more truthfully, I don't have to fret when I lend games to friends etc). Load times don't bother me that much, I've had a NGCD and waited minutes to play games. The only time loads times bother me is when I'm playing an RPG and it's full of battles and each battle takes 30 seconds to load up. If I remember rightly Wild Arms 2 did this on PS1...maybe my memory is bad though.

I currently used Fedora as my OS of choice on my desktop and laptop with Windows XP and 7 running in Virtual Machines if I need to use a Windows tool that won't work in Wine. My desktop environment of choice is XFCE as well :)
