I don't know how many of you had this promo tape. I was mailed one back in the day. I don't know if I still have it.

But you all might enjoy knowing that Tony Hawk was the one who made and edited the video. Tony Hawk said in an interview HERE that he used to do video editing when his income was low. I recognized his voice when I re-watched this video today. So I asked him if he made it. He confirmed that indeed he did.

It seems reasonable that at least 1-2 folks were "planted" to say positive stuff, IMHO.

ANYWAY, the style of the LoT promo is not far removed from early skate videos that my friends watched in late 80's/early 90's...so that's kinda neat (so many promo videos back in that era were very, very corporate, as you well know...even when attempting to "connect" with youthful demographic, it was usually a condescending and/or infantile tone in most corporate videos)

...LoT, in contrast, has a nice vibe to it. It's goofy and silly and

Note: Of course, I'm not saying Tony filmed it (he said he only edited it, correct?). By I wonder who actually conceived/filmed the LoT video.

I wrote about this years ago, but I can't find my old post to copy....

The reason why Vigilante is a favorite is not because the artwork is "amazing"...it's the sheer brutality that is captured in a fantastic composition that harkens back to the imagery I associate strongly with Dario Argento:

Eyes
Knife
Mouth-muted
Piercing, vulnerable eyes
Piercing, blade
Omnipotent fist

If ever there was a video game cover composition that illustrates the physical/emotional/social/political politics of gender, this is it.

Obviously, the discussion of gender has expanded far beyond this image, but for late-80's, or even today, it is still pretty poignant.

We still sexualize and stylize violence in art/film, etc. etc. we still rely on the tired cliches and tropes.

I think the Vigilante cover was inspired by the slasher/horror/thriller film genre and the tone is pretty intense for a children's PCE game.

Context is important. In the late 1980's, the mainstream gamer was not commonly acknowledged to be anything beyond 8-16 year old boys.

Lots of video game covers have tried to show terror, but the compositions were closer in spirit to 1950's horror/Godzilla films with "screaming people"...

...none have the intensity of the seemingly goofy Vigilante cover.

Composition: A+ This could easily have been too "busy" and distracting. I love that a few key elements remain the focus: eyes, blade, mute-by-fist


Artwork: OK. appropriate for a kid's video game...I don't think it would have been approved if it were grittier/more realistic... the artwork softens the brutality...slightly, and makes it even more effective at disturbing me.

Flaws: Depending on how you view it, you might feel that  the eyes are "dead" and lifeless (and therefore not effectively communicating "terror")...but I could argue that this makes the message even stronger: She is already a casualty/she is already dead. There is no life left. Even if she were immediately released, the damage has been done. She will never be the same. That's the true horror—we failed before we even began.

I love the cold, but even I was getting chilled.

The funny thing is that the battery on my phone doesn't last too long, when shooting video, in sub 30° F temperature, so we had to finish before our fingers and/or battery froze.

Is it only for CD games? Because the PC Engine does not (or cannot) make sounds low and loud enough to be benefitted by a subwoofer. A high-fidelity sound chip it is not. Pretty much mostly midrange.

The Blazing Lazers Arrange really was intended for the Virtual Cushion (as a joke, years ago). I was going to buy VC and I wanted to see what sorts of music created the best experience (i.e. disproportionate bass, but not too gratuitous). I just wanted to goof around with the obscure audio gimmicks from the era (there is another wacky thing.... Roland Sound System? that you'll find on a game or two? I can't remember). I don't think the Pac-Land soundtrack has particularly booming bass, but, hey! All the more reason to slap the Virtual Cushion all over it

That's awesome! I got it on the recommendation of Sinistron (RIP), and Beat it over a weekend. I remember level three being impossibly hard, so I left it on through Saturday and came back to it Sunday. EVERY game in the xonk series is better than Bravoman and Bravoman is better than every game on this list including Falcon, so I can't see why you'd bring them up. Look at the headphones. What a glorious aesthetic. I saw a lot of "bulky" stuff in the 80's (Aiwa's AM/FM radio built into headphones, they were actually pretty sweet), but I don't recall too many headphones with the design above.

That cushion is to keep your ass from falling asleep while playing your Turbo Express/GT on the toilet.

Absolutely. I have a 3.5mm headphone plug splitter. This allows me to plug my TE/GT into the Virtual Cushion and my home stereo simultaneously.

It is literally the best of all worlds.

One word describes it: WALLOFSOUND.

Besides Metamor, Image Fight II also "officially supports it."  I did a youtube vid on this thing a looong time ago if you search for it.

BAREKNUCKLE FIGHT (Penalty Stage music?) generates surprisingly satisfying vibrations, if you know what I mean.

Apparently Metamor Jupiter was made to have rumbly low-frequency sound effects specifically for this device.

Also, Panasonic made something that was basically a clone and was advertised for more general use. In fact, the parts for the PCE version were manufactured by Panasonic in the first place, so the clone is probably very similar indeed.
