10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Quote from: cdpog on 03/18/2016, 08:50 PMHiyo, didn't see this until right now. Region switch for the cards, or no?
Just an fyi. You don't need a region mod if you plan on using a Turbo Everdrive as you can play US and JP games on an unmodded console. This is actually the best and cheapest way imo unless you have to have and play the US HuCards.
This is why I never modded it.

Also, someone asked if it's been recapped - it has not. IIRC, the Duo-Rs are safe. I mean yes, my EE background tells me to recap EVERYTHING, but it's not a necessity like the standard Duos and Expresses.
#4
Does not but I found my Arcade Card Duo in case that ill also throw in.
#5
Thanks! It's on eBay now too, just so everyone knows.
#6
Last notice.. Im heading local if this doesn't move soon.
#7
Ah. gotcha. I'll pass on the trade, but I'd need a decent offer on the Ave6 to compensate for the price drop in the system.

Quote from: CGQuarterly on 03/12/2016, 11:17 PMSince you found a standard 2 button pad to include, LMK if you'd be willing to sell the Avenue Pad separately.  I could also trade for a Duo-RX 6-button pad...
Any difference in the Ave6 and the RX Pad?

As the title says, I'm selling my component modded Duo-R with an Avenue 6 gamepad. The component mod was installed by me, using Turbokon's chip. New laser. Security screws replaced with standard ones. All cables included.

Looking at $400.00 shipped in the US OBO. International pays additional shipping costs.

He's a mod/repair guy who like thesteve, turbokon, Keith Courage, etc and like many of them, sells systems he's modified. He is actually responsible for the good deals as he asks much less than most people, especially for fully modified serups.
Thanks man! Appreciate it. :)

Yet you still have nothing to refute my stats.

EDIT: Whatever, I'm done with you.

OP, I truly apologize for the derailment. I'd love to do business with you if you're interested. Thanks!

Well, these are VA6 models, so they do have the TMSS splash on boot. But the upside to these systems are that the CXA1145 encoders used seem to have better video output than the VA2 or VA3 models. They all use the same encoder, but for some reason the earlier models have worse output than the VA6 models. But the model 1s all have superior sound to every other model out there.

Getting out of the game sale!

I'm getting out of the modding business! Long story short, I've been doing this for 5 years, and it's time I started enjoying the fruits of my labor. That said, I have a small backlog I'm clearing out, then I'm done!

Next up is  modded Sega Genesis model 1, VA6 systems. The following modifications have been made:

-Component out (240p).
-10 MHz overclock.
-Halt switch.
-Stereo audio out.
-Region switching (JP/US).
-COMPLETE Electrolytic capacitor replacement.
-LED replacement.
-S-video out

SOLD

I also have a working Intel Core i5 4690k 3.5GHz Quad Core processor for sale. Open box, but never used (In my haste to get a working proc, I ordered one for a LGA1150 board, when I had a 1156 board on hand - doh!) Comes complete with stock fan. Asking 200.00 OBO. Can provide pics if desired.

If more pics of anything are desired, or if video is desired, please let me know. Additionally, please feel free to ask anything you wish regarding any item you see here. Thanks for looking!

Quote from: thesteve on 03/24/2015, 01:26 AMthe controller is multiplexed
that means if its only 1 button it can only be the controller
note the turbo switches tarnish causing this
Yeah, I read up on the controller function before I posted here. So, with that in mind, I had an idea the other day:

Take the cable out of my known working PCE pad, and swap it into the TG16 pad, and vice versa. That way I have a PCE pad that I know works that I can test on my TG16...

And it works. That's so fucking strange that the SAME thing happened to two separate controllers. So, I guess my next steps are to get the controllers working. I'm guessing it's either the 74HC157 (which I think I have on hand) and/or the 74HC163 (which I'll have to order), since it controls the rapid fire, which - and correct me if im wrong here - is just a simple counter that polls the controller for rapid fire (at which point II works).

Thanks for the help, all!
#26
Who knew rabbits could hold so much blood?

Anyway, I also forgot to mention that I replaced the DIN jack too. I also tested continuity from the chip to the control. I just dont get it.
#27
So I picked up a TG16 this weekend, and I immediately set to component and region modding it. The mods are fine, but something I didn't notice when I bought the system was that the II button on the controller doesn't work unless the turbo is all the way on, and then it's sporadic at best. I tried another controller, same thing. I reflowed all the connections inside the controller, the DIN jack on the TG16, the filters that are in line with the buttons and pin 16 on the HuC6280 (which controls button II) and no go. So I tried grounding pin 16 and every time I do, the console registers a return as if I pressed button II. So i ran a wire from pin 16 on the HuC6280 to the filter on the controller line that controls button II, no go. I shorted the filter, no go. I replaced the filter, no go. So at this point, Im not sure what to do as I've done everything I can think of... help! :)

Quote from: turbokon on 03/05/2015, 01:20 PMLooks like low voltage to me.  Might try a different voltage source.  I think thesteve design has a higher power consumption then acer's,
I'd like to hear TheSteve's take on this, as the circuit seems to use mostly passive components. I mean, if I can power an IC AND a sync stripper using the same +5v source that I have connected to your circuit, im hesitant to think it's a power consumption issue.

Unless you're suggesting that I tap into the ~11V input voltage for the circuit...

Quote from: thesteve on 03/02/2015, 02:57 AManother note, i know the TK board (my circuit) can do better then that on the genesis
during the circuit redesign i was switching between un-amped PCE and GENI SCART for my input
had good results with 75ohm and 220uf in the scart cable and 75ohm to ground after the cable
Thanks for the tip. I'll try terminating the signals the same way.

Quote from: turbokon on 03/02/2015, 07:33 PMLastcallhal, where are you getting your signals from?  I tapped every signals off the CXA1145 chip on a model 1 genesis.  I'm still using version 1 component board.
I am tapping from pins 21-23 on the CXA1145 for RGB, and I've tried the component out AND the sync out from the DIN-8 jack from the back of the console for a sync signal.

These are the same signals I'm using for Ace's board, too.
#30
He started adding the LM1881 in version 2.0.
#31
RE: Ace's circuit. That's a really old design. Here's the current design:

IMG

I actually just made a board through OSHPark today that got sent off to fabrication:

IMG

In a few weeks I hope to see how they turn out, as I've been using an older design prior to today.
#32
It's a BA7230LS - I have ~100 of them sitting on my bench. It's just a video encoder. You can get them for a dollar or so if you buy a lot of them (which is how I wound up with ~100 of them)...

I know im being a pain in the ass wanting to get the circuit to work for something other than the Turbo stuff, but I'm really interested in the circuit's output, especially based on the pics that TK put on his thread. The output looks crystal clear, and no jailbars, which is the seller for me. Ace's design still has jailbars on the Model 1 Gennys and the Master Systems. If I can get a clear pic out of the TK board, then Im all for trying to figure this out. I just have no idea where to start...

I want to be clear, here: I don't think the amps are faulty in any way - they work fine on the Turbo stuff. I just don't know what's going on when I connect them to a non-Turbo console...
#34
It's on my to do list. My concern is that I've used a different component circuit on the Genesis/SMS with the same TV im using now, and the colors are noticeably brighter between the two circuits, so unless the TV is sensitive to the output driven from the R-Y and B-Y outs, im not entirely convinced that it's the tv. But yeah, I plan on trying it on another set tonight.
#35
Hey Thesteve, thanks for writing me back.

To answer your questions:

It is the old version of the board. I bought about 15 of them a few weeks back.

I have placed 1K and 1.5K resistors on the board, both to the inputs themselves, as well as to the input solder points of the resistors (which had been suggested by Turbokon). The video is still dark either way.

I've tapped C-sync from the AV out as well as directly from pin 11 of the CXA1145 - there is no change in quality.

I'm in the process of building the circuit I already posted to show off the difference.

Thanks again!
#36
So, I have a question... I bought a few of these chips from Turbokon, and I set to installing 2 of them into a Genesis and a Master System. On both systems, with two different chips, my colors are coming out very dark. The whites look like a medium grey and the remaining colors are dark, as well. I tried tweaking the luma signal but that only served to make the colors look washed out, and not brighter. So, I removed the 1k resistors that are connected to the RGB inputs and replaced them with 1.5k resistors. no change. I'm tapping into a CXA1145 encoder on both systems. I haven't tried it with my SNES yet, but I wanted to get this resolved before I move on.

Here's a question: For sync, I'm tapping into the sync pin and not the composite pin. Would that make a difference ? I'm using the older encoders for this, so I thought without the LM1881 I could use the sync signal without issue (I'm using sync out, not sync in). I'd really appreciate any help on this. Thanks!

Edit, I have also tried this circuit on a Genesis:

IMG

This circuit works fine, and on the same television, the colors look correct. I could build this circuit, but since I have the chips from TK, I want to use those instead. Thanks.

Just curious, does this mean that you enhanced the RGB signal or just gave it the not so great default RGB option that the model 2 has?

Also, you ever work on a JVC X'Eye before?
It returns the RGB signals generated from the CXA1645 back into the AV out. From what I remember, it's not bad, it's the CXA1145 on the model 1 that has a bad RGB output.
