2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Just watched it earlier - nice gaming room and audio setups. Even the retro systems gets a nice pair of speakers, as they well should

Dave should put up a sign "You have found a secret area" above the entrance to his secret box storage...space...room thing. And put a chest in there for good measure.

Oh, just watch it, Tats.

Here's some fun fact's on Panzer Dragoon Saga. The low print run legend comes from the fact that when originally released in May of 1998 Sega of America printed only 6,000 copies.

However, Sega made several reprints starting in July 1998 and through September of that year. There was around 36,000 North American copies of the game. It's actually an average level print run for a US Saturn game. It's just a high demand game, and the legend of the low print run remains years later.

Grandia 1 is terrific.

Great characters, great pacing and interesting and whimsical scenarios. Even the battle system is a lot of fun. Oh, and don't forget the music.

The second game tried too hard to be "bad ass" and copy the dark SquareSoft aesthetic of the time it was made. I wasn't that impressed with X-treme and while I own Grandia 3 it didn't keep my interest long enough to progress very far.

I never finished Grandia 2. I don't even know how far in I got. At least several hours. No idea how long the game is.

They are not manufactured anymore and are costly. They used components in the cable to aid in the progressive scan video signal, so you cant just build one on the fly. You also need a older GC deck with the correct digital AV port. It is cheaper and best to just buy a old Wii with GC ability and use that instead via component out at this point.

Got mine direct from Nintendo back in 2004 for about $25. Thank god I didn't throw the box away; never dreamed it would become a collector's item.

Joe Redifer

Yes the Gamecube has digital video that the component cable converts into an analog signal. I don't know if the digital is DVI-spec or not. Knowing Nintendo, probably not.

roflmao

One of the great things about Super Mario RPG is that it still fun to play as an adult but it doesn't have any scary monsters or adult plot lines so I can play it around my 5 year old. :)  It's funny how that's become a factor these days.

I have found Last Resort to be a fair shooter, but very hard to get into. Credit feeding has been the only way for me to make any progress and there isn't any fun in that. Granted, the only version I have access to is on SNK Classics for the PS2, though I doubt it would make any difference if I had an actual copy. Plus Last Resort doesn't hold my interest like other shooties, e.g. Galactic Attack and Spriggan. The game's presentation is very nice though.

Joe Redifer

I love the internet. If I don't think of a game the exact same way someone else does, I'm the one who is ignorant.   ](*,)

SuperDeadite

The thing with Last Resort is that it's a 100% offensive based game.  The Unit is not meant to be used as a shield, you should be firing it non-stop.  A few hints, the orange unit sticks to walls, and is extremely useful.  Also be aware the charge gauge does not determine power, just how far the unit will fly.  This is a game all about getting up really close and smashing it all with the unit.   The 2nd loop has some cool surprises too. :)  Honestly I find this game way easier then R-Type, but you can't be a chicken, you have to run in and destroy.

Hmmm... a rapid fire button might help. Did they ever make a Neo Geo Advantage? They should have.

Tatsujin

No, with a rapid button the drone/globe/shield is becoming useless.
You must charge and blast all the time. And between that you can let off some rockets and lazers.

Nah. There's definitely something missing that R-Type has. The drone thingy in R-Type is much more cool for one. The enemies are much more interesting. The music is better (at least on the Turbo, not in the arcade). R-Type doesn't have those ear-piercingly annoying PSG sound effects that so many Neo Geo games do. And it doesn't try to blatantly rip off its artwork which gives Last Restort sort of a cheap Chinese knock-off type of feel. There's "Inspired by" and then there's "Inspired a little too much by".

The game would probably be much easier without the control lag, also.

You just did not realize of how to use the drone in a fun way. The R-Type's drone may look cooler, but the Last Resort's drone can be used much more efficient and really adds a lot of value to the game.

The music is fantastic in LR, the PSG sound effex are debatable.

Also LR isn't really a blatant R-Type rip off since it is made by the very same IREM peeps that made R-Type.

An just as a side note, I also do love R-Type more than Last Resort, and that will never change. But this doesn't change the fact that LR is a fantastic game of its own kind.

Ah damn, that's right. Never bothered me tho, found it very cool back then and still find it so today. As we had an other deticated thread about this before, there are many many games using elements from movie, anime and music industry. I guess there's nothing more Japanesish than that :)

The drone in r-type is more for positioning then any thing else. While the drone in last resort can be used more as a weapon. The other being how much memorization is required for the game later stages. The most i would nick picked towards last resort is the slow down in some stages. Not to mention, having to finish the game on it's second loop for the ending. While it's not better then r-type i do like how last resort has some of the same mechanics. For that matter for a early shoot'em up on the console id rather play LR instead of ghost pilots......

How are the PSG sound effex [SIC] debatable? Are there actually people that like the overloud PSG sound effects used in many Neo Geo games? It looked better in Joe's video than on my TV, and I have a pretty good TV. The only thing I've found that works well is a Commodore 64 monitor with the colors turned down a bit, it looks pretty good that way.

I actually play mine on a SD CRT using a HDMI to S-Video converter. Looks decent, not as good as a real Neo by a long shot, but about the same as running a Neo emulator on a OG Xbox.
