@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Quote from: Mathius on 06/15/2013, 09:40 PMDungeon Explorer is definitely the superior game. I think Neutopia has some fine music and atmosphere, but doesn't hold up the imaginative standards set by The Legend of Zelda. The first three Zelda games have a soul.
I almost beg to differ.  I love A link to the Past. It's one of my favorite games on the snes.  However, my 5 yr old son and I have been playing through it for the past few days and when I popped in Neutopia as a little break, he LOVED it.  It nearly brought a tear to by eye.  We've been playing that ever since.
This warms my heart. Have you shown him the original Zelda yet?[/quote]
Let him beat Neutopia first! Then say, "...and here's the "original" Neutopia: it's called..."

I loved Zelda and LttP both (and the two Neutopias!), but when it comes to these types of games, I always pick Crusader of Centy first. A lot of people will disagree with me, but I love the FM tunes and the way the game controls. It's a reasonably long game and has lots of cool little hidden surprises and funny remarks from NPCs. To me it feels like a perfect mix of the depth of LttP with the lighter action-first vibe of Neutopia.
Crusader of Centy is a game that has always eluded me. I have never seen it for sale anywhere (aside from ebay). One day I hope to see what all the fuss is about. I refuse to emulate games in most cases.
Crusader of Centy is a obscure one but a solid action rpg for the genesis. It was a late release by atlus so id assume it didn't have a large run.If you want don't want to emulate it,it can be played off a flashcart. Not to mention the japanese version often go's for $20.00 complete under the name shinsouseseiki ragacenty. When it came out originally i remember it being compared more towards zelda lttp then neutopia.
I'll probably hold out for a NA copy. Patience seems to always work out for me.

If we are going with Zelda "like" games, I'll throw in Beyond Oasis by Ancient on the Genny. Of course being a late release and having the Koshiro clan working on it lends to it be so solid.

Didn't Crusader o' Centy come with a small strategy guide of sorts? Because my copy has one. It seems to have been published by Assless I mean Atlus.

Sadly, I don't currently own it.  But if I ever find it on the cheap out in the wild, I'll pick it up and I'm sure we'll love it.

The problem with Elemental Master, is that Undeadline just destroys it in all aspects.  EM is a decent game, but man Undeadline just does it so much better.

Not in the music aspect! From what I've played of Undeadline it was initially too hard for me to care about continuing to play it. Elemental Master eases you into the difficulty like a properly designed game should. Games that are hard right off the bat are really only championed by people who consider themselves elite and I don't like those people. That said, I have not really put a lot of time into Undeadline so take my comments with a grain of salt. I do remember liking the cemetery stage.

geise

Super is probably comparing x68k version anyways, which is totally unfair. :D  Both are good games on the MD, but I also prefer Elemental Master over Undeadline.

SuperDeadite

Actually I'm comparing the MD versions.   The MD Undeadline was done by PAL Soft and is a totally different game from the MSX and X68000 versions.  The computer versions are both awesome in a masochistic kind of way, but have parts that require pure luck to survive.  PAL Soft's changes for the MD version make it a much better game to actually play.  They completely removed all the random crap, and the focus is on pure skill.  It's a tough game for sure, but never cheap.  It's a lot like R-Type imo, when you die, it's your fault.

Why have I been ignoring Granada for so long? I was picking my jaw up off the keyboard when I saw those sprite rotational effects. Nice!

I have been hoping to come across Elemental Master for ages. Not once have I scored. I'll keep looking.

Dave really sold me on that Kirby game. I am not the hugest fan of Arkanoid clones but sometimes I like to fire one up. Like Metal Orange Kirby looks to be lots of fun!

I picked up Shinobi at MGC this year. I played through a couple stages, then put it down. Yuzo Koshiro really adds so much to the "Shinobi Experience", but I'll try to put my feelings aside and give it another chance. I might track down that European version just to have a different OST to enjoy.

Thanks for all your hard work, Joe and Dave!

Don't you own an X68000 now?  Play Granada on that.  It has way better colors then the MD port.

My collection hasn't grown since MGC. I am set to maybe get hooked up with CF in a few weeks so maybe I can get Beamer to include that game. And if I do I will get the MD version anyway just for comparison's sake. :)

Cool episode. Looks like Ys finally got the love it deserves. :) Just a thought, maybe do one on point and click adventure games like Discworld and Blazing Dragons? I know both of them were released on the PS1 and Sega Saturn and from what I can see on the net there hasn't been a review comparing the different ports of said games.

Cool show, but you really have to lissen to the FM of galaxy Force II. It's lightyears better than the MD version. If nothing else comes near to the arcade, then at least its music does.

Sure has some of the best tunes on any SMS games ever.

Mathius

Oh man, Joe, my heart was racing when I started watching this episode! There are so many thoughts running through my mind as each game is featured, but I can't spend the time commenting on each feeling. I will say that the PSG version of Space Harrier trumps the FM in that one rare case. Also, I can totally *TOTALLY* relate being obsessive with parallax. I see it everywhere! Especially when I am driving. I guess it isn't too safe looking out my driver window at the scrolling horizon is it?

futureman2000

Awesome episode! I have a strong affinity for the SMS- it was my first console as well. The FM really makes it shine in comparison to the NES, too bad they didn't include it over here. It makes the games seem a lot less glitchy, because it doesn't cut out as much as the PSG (or do I imagine that?).

Joe Redifer

Well maybe it's just me, but I think a few games that have FM music also use PSG for some sound effects. I don't think many do this but I'm pretty sure a few do. I wish more did. The FM kind of sucks for sound effects (just listen to the sound effects in Golvellius or Lord of the Sword). Maybe it would have been too difficult or memory intensive to say "use PSG sound effects and let FM do all music"? Or maybe the programmers didn't think to do this? I don't know.
