A lofty goal. You know Michelle Obama was upset when you failed to devote any time to Phantasm<->Timeball in the recent "Games Based on Movies" episode.

Hey Joe, great episode as always. You and Dave both together make every second Sunday morning a great reason to get out of bed and fire up your Youtube channel to see what you guys are coming up with this time.

If you will ever cover more Macross games (I saw your reviews for DYRL and Plus), I would recommend you trying SDF Macross for the PlayStation 2. It is made by SEGA, so this should be reason enough for you, shouldn't it?

Oh and by the way, it controls really well and is full of action, transforming and dogfighting. Even if someone is not familar with the show or isn't able to understand Japanese (I can't), the mission objectives are easy enough to understand from the graphics in the briefing room dialogues, making this game is an enjoyable experience. There are two stories that follow the battle events of the 1982 TV series and the 1984 movie version of Macross. A functional tutorial shows you what buttons are assigned to which actions.

[PlayStation2] Macross (マã,¯ãƒã,¹) - Opening, Stage A:01 (Part 1 of 2)

It can still be picked up for a low price from Japan, which is convenient regarding this is a good quality game.
If you want, you could also bother with the (rather mediore from my point of view) Macross Scrambled Egg Zone Valkyrie on the SNES and Macross 2036 on the PCE, although these two shooties can't reach the levels of goodness of the PS2 game, so I won't blame you for leaving them out. And don't even think of touching the horrible mess which is called Robotech Battlecry. SRSLY.

Great episode.
I love the game Assault Suits Valken (Cybernator) the Super Famicom box artwork was amazing.

I didn't care much for the PC Engine Macross 2036 but the Super Famicom Macross Scrambled Valkyrie is awesome! it has great gameplay with loads of sprites on screen and superb graphics. Overall it's one of my favourite shoot 'em up games.

Another awesome episode. I wasn't aware there was a action oriented front mission game.

I concur! Also the PS3 Macross game is awesome! What about Xenogears? Or Armored Core? Lots of other mech games out there..

Joe Redifer

I haven't played Xenogears but I am very familiar with its music. Is it about mechs? All I know is the soundtrack from that as well as XenoSaga. I usually avoid Square games since I'm not fond of stories that take themselves so seriously. Chrono Trigger was fun, though.

Yes it is. I have only played the ps1 game ....unfortunately I am blanking on the story but I want to say it was mixed serious with lighter fun moments.

Xenogears' story was really good for the first 5 hours or so.  After that it gets hyper ridiculous culminating in a silly religious allegories and robots being crucified.  I think it's worth a play through though.

Quote from: TR0N on 11/09/2014, 02:07 AMGame Sack - Sequels That Changed the Game
I love Joe but I feel the music in Final Zone II is really nice (even the two tracks with vocals kick Joe's dry, dusty sack). Of course, most folks might agree with Joe, but I love the Red Book for FZII (the game itself is mediocre, at best, so the music is the only highlight, really).

I still have to catch-up on random episodes I've missed, but I WATCHED THIS ONE and I am glad Zillion was mentioned. I liked both of 'em on SMS, but I concur that  the original is better.

I actually was surprised when I saw the Toe Jam & Earl platformer...I didn't know the formula was ever changed (obviously I haven't followed the series closely).

For the next episode, Dave should have hair and Joe should go Shaolin Monk.

Also, I hope X68000 episode is in the works (I have no idea if capturing video from X68000 is tricky, but I hope Joe can figure it out).

A few other games that fit in with your theme of changing stuff up in a sequel:

Street Fighter,
Legend of Xanadu,
Resident Evil from 3 to 4,
Ninja Turtles,
Alundra,
Panzer Dragon from Zwei to Azel,
Actraiser,
Ogre Battle to Tactics Ogre,
Shadowgate,
Double Dragon 4 to 5

I kinda think that you can put pretty almost any game that had its roots on an earlier console and then made an appearance on the PS1/Saturn/N64 era or later systems in these sort of lists.  Off the top of my head:

Metal Gear,
Zelda,
Mario,
Shining Force,
Metroid,
Sonic The Hedgehog,
etc
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

Street Fighter, the first game (if we're talking arcades where it started) is inept but the same series.
Ninja Turtles the NES games are different but the second game is a port of the first arcade game.

Going from 2D to 3D doesn't necessarily always change the genre of game, just the play mechanics.

Street Fighter(Arcade) to Street Fighter 2010? Did anyone even think of that as a sequel?
Also, the changes from Actraiser to part two  are/were a serious disappointment, even though I just finished it(the first one) for the first time last month.

Another great episode.  It's so funny.  It seems like the last 4 or 5 episodes have covered games I recently purchased.  I actually passed on Dungeon Explorer.  After watching this episode this morning I decided to go snatch it up but it was sold yesterday.  Dang!  You've also inspired me to grab a copy of Terminator.

I've paid $750 for Eliminate Down. Every day is a battle between keeping the game (I love it) or seliing it back (paying that much money for a video game is absurd). I also have Little Samson but got this one for a more reasonable price a few years ago ($150, but cart only).

Regarding the new episode, I loved it. Too bad Lords of Thunder wasn't mentioned though, as it is my preferred version of the game for some reason - I don't mind the darker color palette and greatly enjoy the slightly remixed soundtrack.

I think I want to rewatch the old episode for Sega-CD now....I love that they really transcoded (converted? Whatever it is called) the video to run off of real hardware. Real FMV from Sega-CD.

That aspect alone makes it the best episode.

For this new episode....I wonder if they simply used effects. It looks great, of course. But SFX can't compare to genuine FMV. :)
