Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys English Dub Patch v1.1

Art By My BRO!!!!! (Timothy G.)

(Wallpapers 1920x1080)
Wallpaper 1 Wallpaper 2 Wallpaper 3

Finally! After 8 years, the Ys IV English dub patch is now complete and ready for your TurboGrafx-CD!

-Intro-
This is v1.1 of the Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys English Dub Patch. This patch will dub over everything into English. It requires that you apply it to an ISO/WAV/CUE archive of Ys IV; one that's preferably patched with NightWolve's text translation.

-How to apply the patch-
Place your ISO/WAV/CUE archive, that you should of ripped from TurboRip, (Included with this patch) and place the files in the root of the ?Patch? folder.
Start the ?Patcher.cmd? to start patching the game. If all goes well you should be greeted with a nice "The patching process is complete!" message.
A backup of the original Japanese tracks will be placed in a new folder called ?backup?.

If you only have access to a BIN/CUE  rip of Ys IV then please mount it to a virtual drive and rip it to ISO/WAV/CUE using the included TurboRip.

~Note for users with {HCD3051-5-1116-R1P} rips~
There are two different versions of YsIV, version {HCD3051-4-1108-R1F} and {HCD3051-5-1116-R1P}. Both versions are essentially identical; however there are a few extra sectors in some of the audio tracks in version {HCD3051-5-1116-R1P}. This dub was built around {HCD3051-4-1108-R1F} since that is the version I own. When patching the opposite version the TOC will be messed up after patching. This shouldn't affect the game when being emulated, but it will no longer be recognized as Ys IV. To fix this use the included TocFixer to fix the games TOC.

Patch Credits

Quote
Director - Michael G. (Burnt Lasagna)
Directed this dub project from start to finish and did all the voice directing/syncing/mixing/ect.

Producer/Programming/Tech - Nicolas Livaditis (NightWolve)
Founder of Ys IV 2004 project, produced script localization/patch, found all the ADPCM addresses as well as make a new audio dumper/inserter for the project using SOX, TurboRip for easy Ys IV rips to replace Japanese waves with English, etc. Also helped by answering any technical question I had along the way.

Producer/Programming/Tech - David Shadoff
During the 2004 project, David made the first APDCM get/put tools to help lay the groundwork to making a dub possible, which got Justus started off, but SOX was discovered in the 2012 attempt so we used that instead.

In-Game Textual Translation - Shimarisu

Speech Translator - Deuce

-Regarding Repro Selling
I'm very much against repros!
This project was strictly an act a fandom and I do not want that to be misconstrued by the powers at be. I didn't start this project expecting to make any money out of it, nor do I want to. It was made in order to give English speaking fans of the series a method for playing the game in their native language. Nothing more. Not a physical item that you can put on your shelf, just a free file to apply to your game so you can understand it. You shouldn't expect anything else.

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys is still very much being sold today on the Japanese PSN and you can even easily import it, since the PS3 is not region locked. Which I recommend for those of you who have not bought it,
http://www.jp.playstation.com/software/title/jp0555npjj30040_00ys4000000000js40.html

I'm fine with people making their own mockup case/manual that you print out yourself, just please no pressed disks/repro selling!

That is my stance on the matter, please respect it and enjoy the patch on either a CDR or your emulator of choice.

I have Windows 7 and it works for me. I'm assuming the dub patch applied smoothly?
For a work around download PPF-O-Matic here,
http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/356/
and apply the YsIV-ISO.ppf to track02.iso manually.

Hope that helps!

I got the patches working, and I've burned a CD to play on my actual PC Engine. This is outstanding work! Definitely feels like a decent '90s dub! I feel so proud to have played even a small part in the epic story in the creation of it! Thank you so much for everything, BL! Your name will be in Ys fans' hearts forever! =D>

I told my mom today was the best day of my life because of this!

Still figuring out how to get this patch to work in the mean time.
Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

I had an issue where I needed to download a DLL file into the patching directory to get it to work.

What happens when you try to patch the game?

Darm Opening Battle Dubbed!!! This kickass dub was created in the first attempt in 2004 with Justus.

FYI, the ReadMe is now view-able from the server link in the 1st post with Google Chrome. Just fixed it; looks like it was wrongly converted to Unicode (hence twice as big) but without the 2 byte header needed and quotes were inlined as single characters which show up as funky ones when viewed in Chrome. I used two HTML capable editors to fix it. Mike would have to recreate/reupload the Zip file to fix this for other Chrome users unfortunately, but no rush I guess...

EDIT: It appears if you use IE8 or Firefox, they will compensate for the bad Unicode conversion, so I guess that's why nobody but me noticed the problem.

I'm looking forward to the narrator, I hope it looks & sounds as good as I wanted it to be.....if that makes any sense

PD, I can't believe you didn't have more to say in the ReadMe - You've been around since day one of this attempt, I figured you would've been good for a "retrospective" a bit longer than a sentence or two. ;)

I had an issue where I needed to download a DLL file into the patching directory to get it to work.

What happens when you try to patch the game?

Yeah, can you guys tell me exactly what went wrong in both your cases? What DLL, the ASPI one ?

FYI, I threw in a little bit of history in the ReadMe. I found my Ys IV:DOY receipt from TurboZoneDirect, dated December 6, 1996! Click attachment below.

I put my rip (with Nightwolve's translated patch applied) in the Patch folder as the text file indicates. When I run Patcher.cmd and press a key, it says "Checking ISO integrity... File Not Found" and then goes on to unpacking the APE files. Then after awhile it stops and says "Cannot auto detect audio track file names! you will have to manually copy the audio tracks over from the 'patch' folder. Press any key to continue with ISO patching" . I click a key again and a bunch of lines saying "Error: Cannot open '02 Ys IV - The Dawn of Ys (HCD3051-5-1116-R1P)(J).iso' : The system cannot find the file specified." and afterwards says "The patching process is complete!"

I've tried moving the wavs from the patch folder into my Ys IV rip folder and renaming the files to match the rest of the them but I get the same problem. My rip is also the HCD3051-4-1108-R1F version that the readme recommends, so why would Patcher.cmd be looking for the other version?

BL, just want to say, that I am impressed by your daring ambition!  The name "Burnt Lasagna" will be the scourge of all men to come! :D

NW, yeah, I know, I really wanted to!  I just had a hard time figuring anything to say.  I had the same problem with the Mysterious Song DVD, I just couldn't think of anything that I could've put on there.  I'm pretty sure with Jungle Bros. I'll be able to talk about my music a bit though.  Maybe I'll think of something...& then BL can update the Readme! :)

Edit-ok, I can't seem to find my patched version of Ys 4, & I can't get the text patched.  Is says it to use Patchbak.bat if Patch.bat doesn't work, but the file from NW's site doesn't have Patchbak.bat.  Basically, when I click on Patch.bat, it says it's incompatible with 64-bit versions of Windows, & to contact the vendor!  ](*,)  I know I played thru this game way back in english, but maybe the text patch has a problem with Windows 7?

Awesome work guys!!! I will have to play through this again. I played through it once using just the text translation before. I really cannot remember the story or plot from the game at all. Maybe it's because I kept going back to my PC to read all the spoken dialog. Wonder if I was drinking when I played it last as well??

http://www.ysutopia.net/downloads/ys4/YsIV(US)v95.cab

PD, can you download the patch again and run "patchbak.bat" to test my fix? Good call, thanks for pointing that out. I guess I got confident with HL.COM (fancy menu, but pure DOS based which I guess 64-bit Windows rejects) and deleted "patchbak.bat" some time back. I found an old copy of this patch in another old folder which had "batchbak.bat" in there so I didn't have to rewrite it. Anyhow, this should allow it to patch on 64-bit Windows without having to grab the GUI-o-matic version. Extract the new cab in the same folder as the ISO again and doubleclick "patchbak.bat" - it's no problem that it'll be repatching over.

Now looking into Keranu's problem with the dub patch...

OK, here's a hot fix to try. The dub patch didn't work for me either. Download the Zip file and extract it into the patch folder: it has 2 files, a new "Patcher.cmd" and "FileBySize.exe". Then double-click patcher to run it and go from there. I think that should do it for now.

Hey, i had the same issue that Keranu had a couple time.  I thought maybe I was doing something wrong.  I ended up ripping my translated image with TR, then actually placing all the files into the patch folder, without having them in their own folder.  For whatever reason, it then worked fine.  I then since checked it's TOC, and its correct. TR sees it as Ys IV as well. It also works great in my Duo burned to disc.

Great to know that this works as expected on real hardware! I was never able to test it my self, guess this reconfirms that mednafen works great for testing audio issues, on and off the actual TG-CD.

Also, as NightWolve said, if people could test his modified patcher here,
http://www.ysutopia.net/downloads/ys4/DubPatchHotFix.zip
for issues that would help allot in figuring out if I can use this to subside the previous one.
I'm looking at you Keranu 8-[

That worked every time.  The only time it does not work, is if I copy the entire folder into the patch directory.  I needed to actually move all the files themselves into the patch folder.  If I left them in their own folder, it would not work.  No biggie really, just a step some may be overlooking.  Anyway, I have tried it several times, with your new files added to the patch folder, and it has worked every time with no issues.  This being on the rip, Ys IV - The Dawn of Ys (HCD3051-4-1108-R1F). I have not messed with the other rip version mentioned in the thread.

Thanks Bernie, yeah, the new batch file checks out on my Windows 2000 Virtual PC instance as well and it now works every time on my normal Vista installation. Only problem on Window 2000 was xdelta which is compiled to probably only work on Windows XP SP-3 and up/Vista/7, etc. I believe I also know what the problem was with Arjak as well: xdelta has a dependency on the MS "C" Runtime library (MSVCR100.DLL). That's the missing DLL he was likely talking about.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to include it actually with the exe - scratch that, this thing was compiled with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 which is pretty new (Vista includes the 2005 runtimes by default, not this!) - a lot of people are gonna have this problem... meh, they should've complied it statically, I'll look around their site, they got lots of different binaries.

In the meantime, additional instructions are to have installed the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86) available here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555

It's only a 5 meg download and it'll drop the needed file in your system folder basically.

The patch worked just fine for me with Windows 7 and the (HCD3051-4-1108-R1F) disc.

Here was my process in Windows 7

1st. Rip original YsIV CD using turborip beta 1.1a
2nd. Download the YsIV translated text patch http://www.ysutopia.net/downloads/ys4/YsIV(US)v95.cab
3rd. Extract the YsIV Cab file using 7-zip
4th. Place all the files from the extracted cab into the Turborip folder that contains all of the YSIV ripped files.
5th. Hit patch. This will patch the text first.
6th. Extract the files from the YsIV dubbing file using 7-zip
7th. Move all of the files from the Ripped turborip folder(now translated text) to the dubbed Patch folder.
8th. Hit patcher to install the dubbing
9th. Burn CD with nero(or program of your choice) by using the CUE file Ys IV - The Dawn of Ys {HCD3051-4-1108-R1F} (J)

I'm now re-uploading the patch with all of NightWolve's fixes, so the patch will be down for about an hour.

When I run patcher now it says "ERROR: ISO does not match valid file size!" . But after taking Bernie's advice and putting the files themselves directly in the root patch folder, it works! That's good enough for me! :D

I did a quick test on Ootake and everything is in English: the text, the redbook, and the ADPCM! Outstanding work, gentleman! Give yourselves a good pat on the back for me!

Now if we can get this baby produced on replicated discs with authentic packaging someday.... <droolz>
Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

There already is one man. Here it is.  Lightscribe Image http://www.superpcenginegrafx.net/img/ysivcd.jpg

Here is what is looks like once burned to the CD. I know it's a bit blurry. My camera never takes good close up pics.

Ah dammit, ya know, I had a chance to pick between lightscribe or not since I wanted to buy the fastest DVD drive available last year, was only like $10+$15 bucks extra, but I chose the super fast drive instead with no lightscribe support... That feature would be nice to have after all, but I had to be cheap... It wasn't quite as fast as the Asus I got, but I could've lived with it and the additional benefits. Now I get to be stuck with my black sharpie market for the foreseeable future along with my shitty handwriting to mark up discs...

NightWolve expressed interest in maybe having the full patched game pressed as well.  Maybe him and BL can figure out some middle ground.  It would be nice.  :)

Yeah, that's kind of a cool idea and I know I could get Sparky to produce English manuals. If BL would never go for it, that's fine, we could leave out the dubs. Just show where to download them and patch in the instructions and whatnot, etc. But, it's all pie in the sky, maybe way down the road I'd consider the idea.

The thing about pressed disks of this patch is that even if I was okay with the idea, I told all the actors that their voice would only be distributed as a patch, nothing more.  I do not wish to upset any of them by releasing shady pressed disks that have their work on them. There's also the fact that any limited pressing instantly means uber collectors item that goes on eBay for hundreds of dollars after its release.

Anyways the patch is back up with all of NightWolve's fixes (see the front page). It shouldn't, in theory, have issues now.

So, Burnt Lasagna, now that you have finished the long-awaited Ys IV dub, what are you going to do next? Any future projects in the works?

I think pressing discs of Ys IV is a great idea. It is a great way to cap off the hard work you guys have put into the translation and dubbing of this game. It wouldn't hurt to ask the voice actors what they're thoughts are about getting it pressed. I think it would sell very well, especially since the Ys series is one of the most revered on the system.

I've been working on the GameFreak TG-CD puzzle game Bazaru De Gozaru No Game De Gozaru with SamIAm.
(I've mentioned it before in other threads, just never gave it's own yet)

I started work on it a little after the release of the Rondo of Blood patch, though work on it solidified after starting Ys IV. I plan on changing that now that it's out of the way.

I'm a little late to the party but...Yes, the dub is out! Wooooo! I'm glad to see a lot of the technical issues are being worked out and I am greatly anticipating hearing people's opinions on the dub itself. Super excited! Thanks to all the actors, Mike, NightWolve, and everyone else! Now I'll finally finish playing Ys IV.

Also that picture of Adol playing a guitar while a modern city burns in the distance is pretty crazy right? My brother Timothy, who also drew that awesome Rondo of Blood cover, drew the picture. Go Tim!

Have you asked 'em if they mind?  I'll sweeten the deal by offering 'em a free copy.  :)

I'd definitely support this if I got a free copy! I'd say that this fits into the same legal area as reproduction carts. People are still being allowed to make them, and I assume that there are companies who know of it and are simply ignoring them because there's no money to make. :-k

If you're ever okay with having 'em pressed, I'm willing to look at fronting the monies and handling distribution.  I personally think it's a bit of a bummer (and a waste of the effort that went into it) if there's not going to be a 'real' disc made, seeing as lots of guys can't/won't play CDRs on their systems.

Obviously not since the idea is alien to him. In thinking about how I'd do it, if it ever became serious, yeah, you'd simply contact everyone whose labor is reflected in the project and get their thoughts, cut a deal for a % split on earnings if they're willing, or see if they're willing to waive their stake in it and gift it to ya; could be as simple as ensuring proper crediting, but if they're totally opposed, decide how much that should factor into the decision, whether to give that one person a total veto power over the idea or what, etc. In case of the dubs, they can be excluded, even possibly replaced using somebody else's work (VERY UNLIKELY THOUGH) who isn't so fanatical about copyright laws or at least pretends to be, but a lot of it has to do with unfounded fear and misinformation, etc.

But anyhow, I would have to contact Neill Corlett, David Shadoff, several other people out of respect and professionalism, but actually, I'd happily exclude Shimarisu and DeuceBag under principles of tit-for-tat - that's at least 2 people right off the bat that I can cross off and feel totally morally justified in doing so! Shimarisu was caught on eBay selling prepatched CD-Rs with original Ys IV discs to make 'em more valuable - she lived in Japan at this point and was buying lots of them up and selling them like this... If she had at least contacted me first, and not done it secretly to where a friend happened to run into an auction of hers and then told me about it, I would've waived my stake in it and said, "Hey, that's cool, 100% for you, keep it, etc." Instead, in secret, she unilaterally decided a 100% cut for herself, even though a translated disc would not have been possible without my labor and that of others, not just hers, etc.

DeuceBag did the same thing essentially, but with a commercial, for-profit entity/corporation, XSEED! He secretly sold the Felghana script (3 others after) in 2010, 6 months of secrecy just about, and he got 100% of the credit, 100% of the profit (whatever was paid to him), was never heard from again, didn't have a single thing to say to me ever since, just playing stupid basically and projecting as if he had done all the work himself in a vacuum (that was after 8 years of knowing him and ~5 of working together). In both cases, they effectively claimed 100% stake in the end result, even though neither of them would've had anything in their miserable hands to sell to the public, let alone to a corporation, etc. So, the point is, those two individuals can burn in hell and not only would I NOT ask for their permission, or give a damn what they thought, I wouldn't share a single penny of the earnings with them!

Everyone else on the team, as a professional, I would have to notify them and make sure they got word of it. Neill Corlett, for example, was always a professional with me, that was one thing that I noticed about him. I even once offered him $250 to hack the font for Ys IV actually, and years later he regretted not taking me up on the offer! David Shadoff is another pro as well, so out of respect and honor, I would have to let him know and see where he would stand, etc. They never did anything to me that I could ever hold against them, that's the type of people that they are! Even so, nothing comes close to what those two translators did, so I'd still have to be fair with everyone else that played a significant role in making the overall project possible. Don't wanna sound like I think I should get to screw over everybody else, etc. Those 2 cases are folks that said, "Hey, 100% for me, thanks for your labor, for the memories, and it was nice knowing ya, bye bye!!!"

From my experience with pressing MSR, funding money for such projects is a piece of cake around here. We may not have the biggest retro community around, but we have enough loyal fans that will eagerly support projects like this. I couldn't believe we raised over $200 from donations in just one day for only a MSR check disc... the internet is an amazing tool indeed!

Guess it goes without saying that I'd gladly chip in for a Ys IV dub repro

By the way, do you guys think that if Nightwolve and co won't repro the dub that someone else like Care4Data might come in and beat everyone else to it (regardless of what the readme says)?

Lol, "DeuceBag". In all seriousness though, I hadn't heard about him selling out like that... what a shitty thing to do! To be honest I never did like that guy on RIGG, he had a nasty attitude and a sharp tongue.

Isn't that what some jags did to Bonknuts/tomatheous and his Megaman-to-PCE project? Made some awesomely pressed CDs, no question about that, but evidently had no clue whatsoever where the work came from...?

-Regarding the matter of Repros Selling
I've had this conversation before about repros being made for my Rondo of Blood patch and my opinion has not changed since then.

I’m fine with people making their own mockup case/manual that you print out yourself, just please no pressed disks/repro selling!

That is my stance on the matter, please respect it and enjoy the patch on either a CDR or your emulator of choice.

Its great that you did the patch for Drac X, and we all are very happy with the work you done on this one as well, but with all due respect, you aren't the only person involved in this.   :(  I do understand your position, but if all others involved do not have an issue, I do not see the problem.  A big part of this project was the translation itself, and NightWolve handled that.  Far as I can tell, he is fine with it.  I am sure the people involved with the speech would be fine with it as well.  It is just a matter of finding out.  Anyway, that is my two cents.

I get this when it starts patching ADPCM in track 2

After I click OK it says the process is complete.  Is this normal?  I don't want to burn an incomplete patch.  Windows XP service pack 2 (I think).  No clue what that DLL is.

My guess is that I'll need to re-rip the game, re-find the english text patch and then redo this after I get this DLL thing sorted (no clue what a DLL even is, fuggin' Windows), correct?
