The water level where you have to freeze enemies to make them platforms so you can jump over gaps is a nightmare, good luck with that one! I eventually completed Valis III, but it was frustrating and not worth the stress in the end. I think it's only an average game at best. I'll deal with some frustration for games like Castlevania and Contra cause they are usually fantastic and worth mastering, but Valis never felt it was worth the trouble.

I read that the Genesis version of Valis III is better I'd like to try it out one day.

Those flying medusa heads in classic Castlevania games are always a pain in the ass with them knocking you off platforms and into pits. The Grim Reaper in the original Castlevania is another Death machine and takes a little bit of luck for me to beat.
#3
Playing through Dragon Slayer now and hitting up Godzilla on the side. Just saw the new Godzilla Friday and it's put me in the mood for some Godzilla action. :)

Aesthetically I prefer the US turboDuo over any other version. The Duo Rs and RXs tend to yellow and discolor which always looks funky to me. Unfortunately the caps are prone to failure and it's one of the more expensive options so just keep that in mind. My caps went bad on my Duo and I sent it out to Keith Courage for repair and now it's good as new.
#5
Congrats on scoring a Duo! I remember getting my Duo from TZD back in the day it's a shame they aren't around anymore. They were a great way for new turbo owners to score some games outside of eBay. Make sure you check out Spida1a's turboviews channel on YouTube he's got plenty of quality in-depth reviews to help make some purchase decisions.
#6
Sweet looking boxes Sparky I'm definitely down for one of those.
#7
Got my set in the other day as well excellent job as always Chris. Totally agree with your comments in the Dead Moon commentary about nostalgia and the passion of collecting for something you love. Thanks for the hard work and dedication of all involved!  :D
#8
Wow very impressive work! Good luck to you guys in finishing the project. Golden Axe is one of my favorite games and the pc engine version just makes me...sad.
#9
Yeah definitely one of my favorite pc engine games and one of the best Castlevania games ever made. Back when this game first came out I had no idea of its existence being too young and clueless about importing, never mind not owning a turbo CD or duo to play it on anyway.

When I got back into collecting for the TG16 I bought a Duo from TZD and one of the first games I picked up was Rondo.

The ship level is also my favorite stage in the game. The fight against Death on top of the ship is epic.
#10
Rayxanber II of course. R-Type stage 6 is also a brick wall for me and Gradius II on anything but the easiest difficulty. I've also never been able to finish the turbo version of Raiden either.
#11
I haven't turned on my Duo in awhile (shame on me) but I finally popped in my go to game Soldier Blade last night. Playthroughs of Splatterhouse, Bonk's Revenge and Legendary Axe II won't be far behind I think. Maybe it's finally time for me to play through some of the RPGs I've been saving like Mysterious Song.
#12
The TG16 commercials that aired around that time put me on to the console. I vividly remember the clips of Legendary Axe's final boss (what a spoiler) and thinking it looked so much better than my current system (NES). They were also running the 2 free games mail in promotion so that pretty much sealed the deal. I still remember going to the the toy/electronics shop, which has long since closed, with my mother to buy it. It was surprisingly easy to convince my mother to buy me one I guess she was feeling generous at the time.

I picked Bonk's Adventure and Vigilante as my free games. Man those were good times and good memories. I was the only one I knew who seemed to know about this wonderful system and couldn't understand why. It's a shame NEC couldn't compete with the Nintendo/Genesis hype train every kid was on back then.
#13
I've been on a JRPG kick as of late and have been playing some Genesis RPGs as well as YS Book I&II again. I find I'm enjoying YS even more than the last time. The music and story are classic and the voice acting was leagues ahead of other CD titles of the day.

It's a shame YS III wasn't held up to the same standard.

Magical Chase is very enjoyable with some impressive graphics and music for a turbo chip. I think the price of the game has twisted peoples perspective and created knee jerk reactions like this. My only complaints about the game are its relatively short length (it could use one more level) and easy difficulty (I've beaten it on the hardest setting without much practice).

I also enjoy games like Forgotten Worlds and Lords of Thunder where you collect currency to upgrade various things. It gives the game a little more depth and customization.
#15
Magical Chase has some really great, dreamy tunes I'm definitely going to pick up one of these.

Quote from: esteban on 03/23/2013, 10:44 AMHeck yes, Dyna138. I recently replayed NES Zelda (advanced quest, too) and I had a great time because I just took my time. Such a great game.

I've been meaning to replay Neutopia while NES Zelda is fresh in my head, I want to compare them. Will I consider Neutopia an UPGRADE (as I have in the past) of NES Zelda? Or will I give NES more credit now, in 2013, since my original views of NES vs. TG-16 were formed in 1989 and I'm trying to make an objective comparison over 20 years later?

These are things I like to do when I have free time. :pcgs:
I've wrestled with that question as well. I'm a Turbo fan, but on the other hand I grew up playing Zelda on the NES so I guess I'm equally biased either way and will never be able to figure it out.
#17
Started another playthrough of Neutopia recently. It's been a long time since I finished it and I thought I'd play it again and take my time exploring. I don't think I appreciated the game as much the first time through as I was mainly looking to complete it, now I'm just taking my time and enjoying it.
#18
I'm down to order a bunch of these when they become available. That's some excellent work there and a big service to the community.
#19
I popped in Street Fighter II last night and beat it a few times. I'm always impressed with the quality of this port. I remember drooling over it in TurboPlay when I heard it was available on the PCE only to be crushed that it never got a stateside release.

You'd have to be a moron to pay a premium price on something just because some idiot living in his parents basement made some obvious observations about the condition.

Like others have said games should be played and not displayed in cases and "graded". I think it's completely possible to preserve a game and not go to such extremes.
#21
Lots of classics in the orange labels, looking at that list I forgot about Neutopia...and R-Type. I love R-Type if only it would let me win. I get to stage 5 or 6 just fine then It's all down hill from there.

Quote from: shabba on 02/26/2013, 11:23 AMProbably. But what is that game worth? Is there any estimate on the number of copies sold? I had a copy back in the day..wish I still did.
From my experience checking eBay daily for the last few years Terraforming is one of the harder to find CD games that rarely pops up. I remember when I got mine about a year ago there was a big span of time it wasn't listed. I believe I paid $80-$100 a year ago for a mint condition copy.

This auction looks a little suspicious to me...$300+ with 7 days left? It's not usual for the price to spike so early.
#23
Yeah those were the first fun of US releases. Off the top of my head my favorite would have to be Legendary Axe or Dungeon Explorer. Maybe I'm forgetting some though  :)
#24
On actual hardware? Damn it's been a long time it's hard to remember. I have an orginal NES as well as the top loader but not the real estate to keep them hooked up. I play some of my favorite NES games on the Wii VC for the time being. The last game I played through was Faxanadu. Love that damn game, probably my favorite NES game next to Castlevania III and the original Zelda.
#25
Even though I like Keith Courage, Bonks Adventure or even Legendary Axe would have made better pack-ins. For shooters I would say R-Type over Blazing Lazers for a pack-in just for that arcade "wow" factor even though I like Blazing Lazers more.
#26
I placed an order for this yesterday after watching a lot of positive reviews for it. I'm not much of a Neo Geo fan besides liking some of SNK's popular franchises. I've always thought the Neo Geo was niche and overpriced and kinda just ignored it because of that. I didn't want to invest the money into buying an actual AES nor did I kind of want to play the games on other consoles.

So this is a really good option for me as I mostly plan to hook this up to a TV and replicate the experience of playing these games on an actual AES. I know the Neo Geo X might not be AS good as original hardware, but most reviews are saying its pretty damn close and makes you feel like your playing the original system.

I'll post my thoughts on it once I've had some time with it.
#27
I don't view it as an investment as I never plan to sell my collection. I used to sell my games as a kid so I could buy new ones, it's just the way it was back then cause I didn't have income from working.

Buying and collecting retro games just gives me a satisfaction I don't get from current gen games. A lot of the games and consoles I collect for I wanted when I was younger but didn't have the money/time to invest. They don't make them like they used to can be applied to video games and there's a certain magic in those old 2600/8/16/32/64 bit games that is missing from the last 2 console generations. Anyway that's just the way I feel and I think at some point I could stop buying current and future generation consoles and just stick with retro gaming and I would be just as happy...maybe happier.
#28
In addition to what's been mentioned Monster Lair and Exile are two of my favorites. You can also pick up Last Alert and Final Zone 2, those are pretty good top down shooters with some awfully cheesy voice acting.

Having just the 2.0 is pretty limiting you should definitely try and expand to play Super CDs if you can.

Haha this is pretty much my gf's stance on my gaming addiction. The only games she likes is Bonk's Adventure and the Wonder Boy games. It's hard having a gf that looks down on something that is obviously important to you just because she doesn't like it. Oh well what can you do  :|
#30
I'd be excited if I didn't already have most of these games on various other collections. I did download the trial just to check it out but yeah I'll wait and see what Capcom have planned in the future.
#31
When I first started getting back into the Turbo I was only picking up good games I wanted, but the seed was planted by watching spida1a and his collection videos. I really loved the TG16 when I was younger and it seemed like I was the only one supporting this great system back when anyone cared about was the NES and Genesis. I thought with only a little over 100 games and me already having 40 or so it wouldn't be too hard to finish a complete collection

Yeah right...more than 10 years later I'm still working on it. Real life and limited playtime have slowed me down a little but one day I hope to finish my collection...not to mention actually beat every one of them.
#32
I always enjoy playing through Vigilante once in awhile. It was one of my favorite Turbo games as a kid. It's not particular deep, but just a fun simple game to pop in and beat up some bad guys. Pretty much a slightly suped up Kung-Fu.

I remember I got Vigilante as part of the 2 free games offer when you bought the TG16 back in the day. The other game I got was Bonk's Adventure...those were some good times.  :)
#33
I think I'll pop in Samurai Ghost for the first time on Halloween and give it a try. I'll also playthrough Splatterhouse again and maybe Magical Chase or Cotton if I have time.

I wish I had a Supergrafx and Ghouls and Ghost but there's always next Halloween
#34
In addition to what's been mentioned check out Splatterhouse! It's one of my personal favorite TG16 games. Also if you like platformers New Adventure Island is excellent and if you are looking for action adventure similar to Zelda check out Neutopia 1 and 2.

Anyone would be crazy to sell retro games at Gamestop when you can sell it on ebay directly to collectors and cut out the middle man. I'm guessing Gamestop is hoping to prey on someone clueless enough to walk into one of their stores with a CIB copy of something like Magical Chase or Earthbound and walk out with 15 bucks.

Though it would be pretty funny to walk into Gamestop with a bunch of expensive games and pretend you didn't know what they were worth just to see how they'd react.

$25k monies is quite a lot.  Even if you break down the rare games by high end prices, that doesn't make sense.  If Magical Chase is estimated at...  $3k (I know!), there are a few other games that sell in the low hundreds with boxes, and a bunch of $50 and below games.
It's 15k now which is still quite high considering this doesn't seem to include any CD rom titles and or a Duo system. It's probably worth more around 5-6k if you break down everything individually using current sold eBay prices.

I guess for someone who might be loaded this would be an easy way to get a complete chip collection, but damn that's a lot of dough.

I'm sitting on JB Harold and Sherlock Holmes 1 and 2 waiting for enough time to devote to playing them. Back in the Turbo CD/Sega CD days I despised these FMV style games, but my tastes in games have "broadened" with age so I'm going to give these a try eventually. Excellent review as always!

Quote from: tpivette on 08/31/2012, 08:09 PMIt took me no time at all to wipe out everything in the Shrine and find all the Silver equipment (tho, I remember thinking they should have called this game "Keys"... I mean I found 5 of them in the Shrine alone!), and am now in the Mine. So I plowed through that area fairly easy and got to the boss... ugh. It was that damn bird guy that splits into bats... I HATE that guy! Took me almost a day of off and on playing the first time to beat him! Anyone else have problems with this bastard? I can't wait to move past him and go to Darm tower...

EDIT: I leveled up til the Firebird enemies only give me 1 Ex point (I have 90 Hp)... time to try again
Yeah I found that to be the hardest boss in the game. Did you get the silver sword? Getting that sword makes a big difference when fighting the boss. I always like in YS no matter how much you level up it can still be challenging in places unlike a lot of other RPGs where you can overpower your characters and plow through everything.

Hmmm even after all the Turbo/PCE games I've played I'd would still have to say Bonk's Adventure, I loved that game as a kid and still do. The graphics, the music, the satisfying gameplay, the characters and bosses, it has everything a mascot driven platformer needs and then some. Its a game I still play through every now and then.

The original Bonk's Adventure still has a lot of charm that I don't think the sequels were able to match.
#40
Ouch that Magical Chase is up to $1825.00 with five days left.

I haven't seen an MC up on ebay in while let alone a complete one so it'll be very interesting to see what this one eventually sells for. My bets on $2500!
#41
I find most classic games virtually unplayable with touch screen controls and forget about shooters. I have the app and tried some shooters on it, but the precision control is simply not there. I'd like to try Dragon's Curse on it that one might be playable otherwise I just like messing around with the freebies when I wanna kill some time and have nothing else to do.
#42

Another excellent review Chris! I remember struggling with beating SSS, the last boss is a headache. I must have played through SSS around 10 times in one day to finally beat the last boss. Funny thing although I was frustrated failing at the final boss I enjoyed replaying the game so it's a mixed blessing I guess.

Anyway keep up the great work!
#44
Ouch yeah I remember that stage of the game. It can be very frustrating and cheap getting hit and falling off the frozen enemies or not timing it right. I also remember towards the end of the level there are some cheap range attack enemies who will try and knock you off into the water. That was the hardest part of the game for me. There are some frustrating spots afterwards, but that was the worst of it.
#45
Finally got around to playing Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu and I've been having a lot of fun with it. Although it's a little on the easy side the graphics and smooth gameplay make it a fun game.
#46
I have a lot of memories of the Darkwing Duck and Cadash issues of Turbo Play. I still have my original Cadash issue in my basement too, its somewhere all taped up from reading it so many times. I also remember reading that issue of Nintendo Power with Ninja Gaiden on the cover.
#47
While I don't know how much you paid looks like you got a lot of great stuff and a couple of rare games. Too bad there isn't a Magical Chase in there somewhere.

ROLFMAOLOL :D
Stop snickering! Despite the well-known issues (slow down), I actually enjoy Gradius III on SNES. Sure, I wish it was ported to more consoles back in the day, but I am OK with what we got.

I suppose I was simply desperate for a new Gradius game at the time, but I have never hated Gradius III on SNES.

A SuperCD PORT, though, would have been SWEETNESS  :pcds:
lol, i didn't rolf because it is THAT bad, even it isn't really good as well. i was rolfing because it is ones favorite gradius :D

That sentence hurts my head, but I'm guessing you don't approve my favorite Gradius game is part III?

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. It doesn't matter to me who likes of doesn't like the Jag all these years later I'm certainly not "butthurt". If anyone seems butthurt its the people who don't wanna see anyone say anything positive about the Jaguar.

I'm gonna keep enjoying the Jaguar along with all my other consoles whether it's "excellent" or "terrible" cause in the end it's about the games and while the Jag has its share of duds it certainly has some gems as well.

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 07/08/2012, 01:53 AMI mean, you said this. You said it was excellent. You claim that you have the Jag experience to back up your definition of "excellent", unlike me who has clearly never even set eyes on a Jag (so you think), so what is your more educated and valuable opinion on this matter?
Doesn't take much education to understand people like things you don't.
Well put.

If your a gamer you'd prefer to appreciate a console for its strengths and good games and not be a hater.

I've already given my "educated" opinion of the console. There are great games out there for the Jaguar and that's evident if you spend some time with its library. I'll run through some of my favorites:

Tempest 2000 & AvP: These as I already stated are 2 awesome games worth picking up the system for. Both critically acclaimed when they were released.

Wolfenstein 3D: John Carmack recently stated this was his favorite version of Wolf3D and it's easy to see why. It's a lot of fun to play and has a lot things that make the Jag version unique.

Doom: One of the best console ports of Doom back in the day. Easily beats the 3DO and 32X and of course SNES versions, it must have been impressive to see such an accurate port of the PC game back then. Does the Jag having a better version of Doom than the 3DO and 32X say anything about which console was technically superior? Maybe maybe not, but I'm not interested in a console war debate.

Rayman: Originally designed for the Jaguar this is a classic platformer. Fun and inventive with beautiful graphics and animation to back it up.

Iron Soldier I & II: A pair of great games. Smooth playing and mission based both can be a lot of fun to play even if the polygon graphics are a bit primitive. Although ISII graphics were an improvement over the original.

I could go on forever detailing some of these but here's a list of other games I think are solid titles:

Super Burnout
Protector SE
Skyhammer
Theme Park
Cannon Fodder
Missile Command 3D
Raiden
FlashBack
Battlemorph
Ultra Vortek

Admittedly there are some games I haven't been able to play cause they are Magical Chase level priced like Battlesphere Gold and the less pricer, but still rare Gorf, both of which are considered 2 of the best games for the Jag. There are also many games I haven't played yet for the console that are considered good, but can't comment on. Anyway if you're asking me to defend my opinion that the Jaguar is an excellent system then all I have to say is there are plenty of great games that make it excellent.

If you don't like my opinion well...who cares?  The end. 8)
