10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

General Gaming / The C64 Mini
03/10/2018, 02:03 AM
Just wondering if anybody else around here is interested in the C64 Mini?  I'm looking forward to it, just waiting for info on the Western release.  I'm also looking forward to the ZX Spectrum Vega Plus.....if it indeed is actually coming out.  I like the look of the system & it's games.....none of which I really grew up with.  The only Euro stuff I grew up with is the Amiga, with Shadow of the Beast & such.    A friend of mine has an Amiga with tons of games from BITD, though I recall the games taking forever to load.  I have fiddled around with Amiga emu's, but I'd love to see an Amiga Mini!

I was thinking recently about games I've beaten that have songs that I've never encountered ingame.  Right now, I'm thinking of a song called Torodo in Exile.  I've never encountered the song in the many times I've beaten the game, has anyone here heard this song ingame?

Nevermind, I'm super tired.  It's not in english, just emulated in general. Feel free to delete this thread!  ](*,)

I can't believe it's been 7 years since I started this project!  I want to eventually do a modified version of Super Bonk for Turbo CD.  Some here are already aware of this, but I decided to start releasing the tracks I did years ago.

I hope to start up on this project again some day, as well as remixing music for Super Bonk 2, the GB Bonks, & the arcade Bonk(or maybe a new featuring gfx from the arcade game).

Black Tiger was working with me to figure out how the game would work on the Turbo along with Tom/Bonknuts.  BT did some gfx experiments with the first level & the first boss, & Keranu did some ripping & color adjusting for examples of how some colors would be converted.  If I'm forgetting anyone else that got involved in this, I apologize!

I made the tunes to sound more like typical Bonk music(which I also plan on doing for Bonk 3 CD).  Essentially, these sound like the chip tunes from the Bonk's Adventure & Revenge, but enhance.
Anyways, for starters, here's the Title Screen:here's the original SNES version for reference:

I've been thinking about putting different songs in Double Dragon 2, namely, various remixes of the arcade music.  However, the arcade seems to have boss tracks while the Turbo one just keeps playing the level tune.  How hard would it be to add new seek routines or whatever for this game?

I've had a dickens of a time trying to get my cd's working on it.  I've had a few work, but it seems like it's only ones that are BIN files.  I've been busy ripping my collection with TurboRip(though I haven't been able to rip a couple of the homebrew games, which is ultimately for the good IMO), but it's all ISO/WAV.  Even with the few BIN files I have laying around from RIGG, only some of them will run.  For instance, Nexzr is in BIN format(although I now own the original), but it doesn't boot up.  Cotton on the other hand does.

I've also tried Hugo, tried putting games on DVD's as an experiment, but it couldnt' mount the DVD.  And havent' gotten any cd game to boot off my thumb drive on that.

And then there's WiiEngine, which, as far as I can tell, you have to put the games on the SD card, you can't put them on a USB drive. I only have so much room on my SD card.

I've tried various sites, trying to get the right instructions to get these working, but have failed.  I did find a couple of videos that might help me with WiiEngine, but once again, it looks like I have to put them on the SD card.
I havent' fully watched these yet, haven't had a chance, but, if anyone else here has any ideas or feedback, that would rock.  My TGCD & Duo are both on the fritz, & it'd be nice to just have them on one drive, so they load faster, easier access, & not scratch up my discs further.  I swear there are games with phantom scratches.  Dragon Slayer, I kept that game in mint condition, practically encased it in carbonite, & it still got scratches over the years.

Found some PC Engine related stuffs, including PC Cocoron & RPC Genjin, though, at one point, it looks like they call Air Zonk, Air Zoid!

I don't know a whole lot about the game, but, it's Falcom, it's on Vita, & it's being physically released next year....which surprises me a bit.

This game quietly was released digitally.  Gotta say, the graphics suck.  Would love some nice pixel art.  The music is nice & you can choose the GB original.  The game, AFAIK, is a layed out exactly like Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Densetsu 1.  I never did get around to playing that, but I DID play through Sword of Mana, which, despite it's flaws, I enjoyed.  So, this game seems like a step backward, but, it's still fun.  I'm sure FFA purists will enjoy it to some degree or another.....but the graphics!   ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

My wife & I are ready to drive our 2013 Fiat Pop off a cliff, & then proceed to CarMax on Saturday to look for a new car.  I thought I'd get suggestions from ya'll.  She wants something like the Honda Fit.  We want something that will last/quality, & has good safety ratings & gas economy.  We're probably going to look a cars that are slightly used(couple years old).  We've heard of recommendations on the Korean brands lately, but we don't know as much about them then we do about Japanese cars.  Maybe it's just a matter of Googling the right phrase to get the info we need.

I have no idea what location this game takes place in, I don't recall a nation called Dana or Lacrimosa.....

Ok, I'm freaking out a bit, my master disk recently took a dump on me, so I'm running off of m recover drive.  I bought a new hard drive & popped it in, but it's not showing up as new hardware, nor is there even an option to rebuild to a new disk!  I'm not sure if there's anything special I have to do to the new hard drive I put in, haven't had to do any of this myself in probably 10 plus years.  I've done a bunch of Googling & such, I'm not answers that are working, I'm very tired, frusterated & overwhelmed.  Any help would be flipping awesome!

In status it just says:
Array 0000
Volume_0000: Degraded
Update mode: Continuous

Details: A data recovery operation could not be completed due to a problem reported on the master disk. Fix any problems reported on the array disks to resume the operation, or rebuild the volume to a new disk.

Master disk on port Unknown: Missing

In Manage Disk is says similar stuff:
Port: Unknown
Port location: Unknown
Status: Missing
Usage: Master disk
Size: 0 MB
then it gives the serial number, and the rest is blank from there....

General Gaming / Transformers Devastation

Well, this looks promising.  I'd rather it be an adventure game, but a brawler will do, & having the original voices & prog rock helps tremendously!

Looks like some sort of Chrono announcement will happen at E3! I'd prefer a sequal(Chrono Break perhaps?), but a remake might be good.

I'm thinking of using a song from it, to help fluff out Bomb Man's theme in the Mega Man 1 project.
Does anyone know if this theme has any connection to any Robot Master in the entire series?  It's called the Metropolis Continent, & I tend to think of Bomb Man's level as a City, so, I think it'll work.

At least one song in the game has bits from other Robot Masters, like this one, obviously has bits of Wood Man in it:
I also had thought about this one to play around with in Bomb Man's theme:
It sounds like it has something familiar in it, but I've never been able to pinpoint it.  Since it's called the Sand Continent, that probably wouldn't fit in general, but at some points, it almost has a Bomb Man feel to it.  Should probably save it for if I ever did a Robot Master for a later game, whose level is in a desert, like Pharaoh Man or something.
#21
I'm really not sure where to put this, so I'll put it here.  I'm trying to find a way to turn on & off GBA sound channels, so I can record individual channels to help with my Mega Man project.  Does anyone know of an evil emulator that can turn off the sound channels individually, rather then just turning all the sound off?

http://www.siliconera.com/2015/03/13/marvelous-acquires-joe-mac-data-east-library-g-mode-acquisition/

IIRC, all Data East(G-mode) games for the Turbo were pulled from the Virtual Console awhile back.  Maybe we'll see a return of those games in some form, remakes?  New Bloody Wolf perhaps! :D

They own most of the Telenet library, maybe they'll do some PC Engine remakes or re-releases or something....finally!  I recall Vic Ireland trying to work with them several years ago when they first acquired Valis & co.

Off-Topic / Devastator!
02/03/2015, 04:03 AM
Thought I'd post this here for any who might be interested.  This year, Hasbro is doing Combiner Wars, sound like they're doing virtually every G1 combiner & then some.  Most of them will be Scramble City type(Ariealbots, Stunticons, etc. where all limbs can be interchanged), but they're also doing Devastator, who appears to be quite large, & 99.9% G1 accurate!  The only noticeable change I see is how Mixmaster is used as a foot.  In any case, enjoy the first picture!

Kind of a strange story, but, apparently a game called Flying Hamster 2(I have the first one, it's a bit Zonk'ish), didn't meet it's kickstarter, but apparently the Wonderboy series creator took an interest in it, & is now basically brandish it as Monster Boy.  Here's the official site:

Off-Topic / Sega Genesis Megatron?
12/25/2014, 08:50 PM
I'm sure I already made a thread about the Mega Drive Megatron, but, now it looks like there's a Genesis version coming, maybe he's being released stateside?  Which would also mean the PS1 Prime is getting a US release as well(though, it should've been a SNES Prime), got this here:

Just hear about this, might be cool.
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/classic-80s-console-zx-spectrum-reborn/1100-6423922/

I'm mainly interested since I never grew up with the ZX Spectrum.  I've never actually looked into emulation of it, but, if this console does well, I'll pick one up.  I want to first wait to see how the first run does, incase their end up being defective units.

Finally looks like it's coming soon, it'd be nice to play the PCE version in English, but this'll do for now.

I've thought about getting some games that aren't available on the US PSN, but I'm wondering how I would pay for the games.  Is it possible to buy a code off of something like Amazon, but then use it for a different region?  I mainly want to get Tomba! 2, since, on the US PSN, they have the Jp version....which I purchased without really looking at it.  I just assumed since the first Tomba was in English, then surely the 2nd one would be!  In anycase, apparently the Euro PSN has the US version of Tomba! 2, so I want to grab it from there.  Might see was the Jp PSN has as well, maybe check out the PC Engine section just for kicks!  :D

Not a whole lot to show, more of a teaser trailer, but, it's Adol, with rockin' music, etc., so color me excited!  From what I hear, it's a sequal, & not a remake of 5.  Some thought this game was taking place in Xandria, but apparently it's taking place in near Xandria..which probably means they'll remake Ys 5 after this one.

Just incase anyone's looking for the US version, it's still available.  It's pricey, but I think the Jp version at the lowest is $80?  Might be worth it to get the Jp version if the US has inferior materials & paint apps, but I haven't checked.  I mainly wanted to support Hasbro so they keep brining em' outside Japan!

It looks fantastic.  The main bummer for me, is that I don't have a Wii U or 3DS, & would get it on Steam, but I'd much rather wait till it is the PS3/4 or Vita.

A few of them I don't care for, but ones like that new G1 Megs, & Arcee, Chromia, Powerglide, Bombshell, Brainstorm are tempting me!

We want to get rid of cable finally(costing us almost $70 a month), & just do Hulu/Netflix from now on.  We just use the Wii for Hulu in the family room at the moment.  But we have a tv in the master bedroom that is just an old CRT.  Actually, it's my very first TV(a Magnetbox) that was bought for me just so I could play Turbo back in the early 90's.  It still works, & it has sentimental value, but, it takes up room, will eventually go caput, & we could use an HDTV for our camera system as well.  All in all, it just seems like the best route is to get a Smart TV.

So I'm looking at 32", would like a decent brand like Sorny or Panaphonics, probably will end up with Samsung....which is better then Vizio or, there was some really odd brand, something like Dunghouse or something, I forget, LOL.  I'd really like to keep it between $200-300, & no higher.  Anyone know of any good deals right now.  It seems like I'll end up with a Samsung that is just over the $300 mark, or more, depending on the site http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-32-class-31-1-2-diag--led-1080p-60hz-smart-hdtv/5555718.p?id=1218690756734&skuId=5555718&st=UN32EH5300&cp=1&lp=1

Samsung seems to be considered an ok brand for TV's.  The Vizio ones do seem to go cheaper, sometimes under $200, & some sites have decent customer reviews, but I always thought Vizio was el' cheapo in quality.

As far as places go, I've been checking Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Newegg, & Fry's.  I can't seem to think of any other places offhand.

Just picked up the new version of Whirl, which is a thing of beauty.  I never had the original other then a knock off that was a lot smaller.  This one, like the original TF's version, comes with sticker to apply!  I have a love/hate thing with stickers.  I suck at putting them on, but it reminds me of my childhood.  Whirl & Roadbuster were ones I always wanted.  I don't recall seeing them in stores in my area offhand.  In anycase, here's the original G1 Whirl(assuming these pics show up, & the new one!)

Forgot to add pics of the old & new Roadbusters!  My understanding is that it's a remold of Springer.  Springer was nice, but, I never expected such a nice remold as Roadbuster from him!

General Gaming / Castle of Illusion remake
09/04/2013, 01:11 AM
I just downloaded the remake of Castle of Illusion for PS3(might be on 360 as well?).  Gotta say, so far, I think it's really well done, surprisingly so!  I haven't checked to see who the actual dev was for it, but everything so far is top notch.  They did a flippin' great job on the music, it sounds very Disney with the instrument choices.  I actually never cared much for most of the music of the original.  Infact, I recall getting one tune stuck in my head as a kid(thanks to my OCD) & kept me awake for hours(Zelda 1's dungeon did the same thing).

In any case, no offense to Wayforward & their Ducktales remake, but they did a bang up job!  There's a lot of attention to detail with the animation, not to mention the sound effects.  I do think it's easier(so far, I'm in Toyland ATM), which is fine for dullards like me who have always kinda sucked at video games.  I didn't notice a difficulty setting, maybe one opens up after you beat it.  Oh, & I could be wrong, but for any of those who may have played the Uncharted games, I think the narrator in this is the same guy that does Sully!  Kinda weird, but I think his performance is really well done.

Forgot to mention, it's mostly 2D, but it does have some 3D ala Crash Bandicoot(or atleast it reminds me of it in the first 3D area).  Also, in general, I think the gfx are beautiful, even though they aren't sprites.

Color me excited, a new 2.5d Strider coming to PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox 180, & Steam!  Sounds like it'll have a Metroid styled layout like Symphony of the Night!!!!  I love me some Castleroids! :D

So, we decided to ignore the critics & hate on The Lone Ranger, & just got out from seeing it.  From the get-go I could tell that it was a good movie, & all thruout I enjoyed it!  I'm not saying it's perfect, or that everybody would love it, as tastes differ, but, man, I'm flabbergasted as to how so many people can rip that movie apart!  I would like to see it again, & I'd love for it to be a series, but with how poorly it's doing, I don't see any way that'll happen, unless dvd sales go thru the roof!  I think it's even doing poorly internationally as well.

It's surprising how people will just listen to critics, & not judge for themselves.  I know we don't all have money to go see every movie that comes out, but you'd atleast think that all the Johnny Depp fans would come out of the woodworks to watch it for him alone.  We all thought the actors did a great job, it has some 'Pirates' feel to it, which is fine with me, as I enjoy the Pirates movies as well.

So, in conclusion, if anyone reads this, & goes out to see the movie, & hates it....I'll deny I ever said it was great! :D  Seriously though, see a matinee if you want, we really enjoyed it!

Just thought I'd share what I did to my phone.  I hope it lasts, it's supposed to be vinyl.  I hope ya'll like.  I've never had a phone that had a case I even remotely liked, so I did some Googling & got this made up specifically for my phone.

Here's the front, I took a whole bunch of Bonk/PC Genjin comic strips & lined them up along the sides along with some other random Bonk pics, & at the bottom is mostly the cover for Bonk 3 CD.  On the top I put the standard green adventure label, but the green I had when making the template didn't quite match up with the Turbo green.
/8zsq.jpg

And the back, IIRC, it's from Bonk's Return.  It seemed like a nice good big pic of Bonk, & it looks close enough to the Jp style(actually kinda seems like a mix of the US & Jp styles), & then added the TurboGrafx label.

While there were no pictures shown, apparently Hasbro confirmed Soundwave is coming to the US packed with all 5 of the cassettes shown thus far(Buzzsaw, Lazerbeark, Rumble, Frenzy, & Ravage).  No price or release date was given.  Makes me wonder though if Takara/Tomy will make more of the cassetticons, at the very least, make Ratbat, Sludgefest, & Overkill, as they were all in the original show.  But I'd love it if they also did Masterpiece versions of Squawktalk & Beastbox, & I think there might've been a couple of Jp only cassettes as well.

They also announce Masterpiece Acid Storm.  Seems a little wierd, you'd think they'd release a Masterpiece Sunstorm before Acid Storm...unless I missed him.  Honestly, if I had to have more of the seekers, I'd rather have Dirge, Ramjet, & Thrust!

Some of you guys aren't into the season 3 G1 characters, but, there's some of them coming, most notably Metrolplex(some sites called it Masterpiece Metroplex).

I was in a thread over at Atari Age about Lynx music, & this dude called solidcorp mentioned a friend of his who did a bunch of Lynx music BITD, & looking thru his portfolio, found that he did Beyond Shadowate(among many other games he's done over the years).  There's no extra info beyond that, but thought I'd share regardless, maybe someone would want to do an interview someday.  Here's the original post: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/107173-lynx-soundtrack-rips/page__st__50#entry2669272

Ys Celceta: Ocean Foliage or whatever Falcom ended up naming it, is now being localised here as Ys: Memories of Celceta!  Also, Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles will be released on Steam! I am sad though that there's no Legend of Heroes announcements yet.
http://www.xseedgames.com/news.php

Ys: Memories of Celceta
PS Vita, Fall 2013 – An extensive reimagining of (and pseudo-sequel to) Ys IV, one of the only Ys games never before released in the west, this title puts more enemies on screen than ever before and features the largest, most non-linear overworld in Ys history, boasting superlative graphics and a triumphant evolution of the fast-paced gameplay that has made this series a timeless action RPG mainstay. As the game opens, long-time protagonist Adol Christin finds himself alone, dazed and confused in a strange land, and must piece together his memories of how he got here and why, all the while struggling to determine whom he can trust.

Ys I & II Chronicles+
Windows PC (Steam), February – XSEED Games has delighted RPG fans for years by publishing multiple Ys titles from legendary RPG developer Nihon Falcom for handheld platforms and Windows PC, and now Ys fans can celebrate once more as an enhanced remake of the classic first two games in the Ys franchise comes to Steam for the first time. Including both Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen and Ancient Ys Vanished: The Final Chapter, this action RPG tells of red-haired swordsman Adol Christin's inaugural adventure to defeat the evil forces blighting the isle of Esteria and uncover the mysteries of the eponymous lost land of Ys.

Is anyone here gonna try to purchase it & release it into the wild?  I'd do it if I could.  I know it's not the best of baseball games, atleast, according to the old Duo World reviews, but, still, it's a part of Turbo/PCE history, along with other proto's like Dino Force & Marble Madness.  It'd be awesome if someone was in the position to nab it & rip it into a rom, especially if we could finish it up & release it on hucard or cd if need be.
