Buy/Sell/Trade / ISO CD laser assembly
04/02/2018, 10:24 PM
Just as the title says.  I have a PCE briefcase setup I recapped but, it has a spotty laser.  They are starting to get tough to find so if someone has a spare I would love to buy one.  Also, if you have a laser and happen to be going to MGC I am going as well and could save the shipping.  Thanks!

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTB Windows 98'
01/20/2017, 08:42 AM
This is an odd request but I want to buy a copy of Windows 98 with key if anyone happens to have one laying around still.  I can't find my old disk and I am finishing a major upgrade/overhaul to my old Dell XPS R450 but need an operating system.  I can be a pirate but I'd rather have the real deal.
#7
I have been binge repairing Duo's lately.  Just finished 2 TurboDuo's with typical cap and via issues.  I just got a fairly beat up looking PCE Duo I want to save.

Someone has already done a half cap replacement to it (and was of great workmanship) but the HuCard connector is pretty screwed and sloppily soldered back together from a likely failed region mod.  The board itself is actually in fantastic shape and appears to have been cleaned by whomever did the partial recap.  No matter what I get a solid white screen at boot up.  Here is what I have done to diagnose so far:
- Removed Hucard connector to confirm no short or other damage from attempted region mod
- Checked all power and ground pins on Huc6260, 6270 and 6280 (good)
- Noticed a bit under 5V when checking the above.  Tested 7805's and they were only outputting 4.6 and 4.8V respectively.  Replaced both 7805's and now have solid 5V

I then started poking around with my logic probe and this is where I start to get above my pay grade.  I am hoping thesteve or keith may have some advice.

I checked all pins on 6260, VRAM and addresses for Hu slot.  I honestly don't know what I'm looking for other than some activity.

Hu6260:

- High 1, 4, 13, 16, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 34, 35, 36, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 79, 80

- Low 3, 14, 15, 17, 19, 25, 29, 30, 32, 37, 39, 48, 55, 56, 67, 68, 69

- Constant pulsing 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78

- Nothing 18, 20, 24, 26, 31, 33, 38

HSRM20256LM12:
- 1-13 constant pulse, 15-27 constant pulse
- 14 low, 28 high (I assume 14 is supposed to be ground and 28 is VCC as I couldn't find a data sheet to confirm)

All address lines at Hu slot have a constant pulse

Off-Topic / Hakko FR300

I finally bit the bullet and ordered one so I can retire my old squeeze bulb sucker.  Just wondering how many of you might have one and if so what are the pros and cons (if there are any cons that is).  I'm hoping this tool gets me caught up on piles of personal repair work.

Here is the backstory.  A little while before CCAG in Cleveland this year The Old Man contacted me about doing some testing on U.S. hardware for these CD system cards he has been working on.  He had shown me an early prototype the year before.  I definitely wanted to check them out and agreed.  He gave me a card at CCAG.  I took it home and was unable to get it to boot properly so he sent me a second card in the mail.  After further testing I found out it was my hardware that was wonky and that both cards actually work as they are supposed to.  When I asked The Old Man for his info on returning them after testing he told me to keep them, sell them on ebay for Magical Chase type cash or whatever I wanted to do with them.  Since he GAVE them to me at no cost there was no way I could do that.  So here is the Turbo Community's chance to own an ultra rare piece of dev hardware (I don't know if there are any out there other than the ones the Old Man is using so we're talking OMG ULTRA RAREZ status).  The card is basically just a proof of concept and works as a U.S. region Super CD 3.0 card.

Since The Old Man is one of the gems of the community that is constantly working on new hardware and software for our beloved systems I wanted to do something with the card to at least give him some funding (no matter how big or small) for work on future projects.  I decided the best way to do this would be to have a lottery for one of these custom made system cards.

Here's how the lottery will work.  You can all buy tickets, tickets will be $1 a piece and you can buy as many tickets as you like.  If you would like to purchase tickets please respond to this thread with the number of tickets you want to purchase.  I am going to leave this lottery up for 2 weeks.  Once the 2 weeks is up I will PM everyone with their total to paypal the funds for their tickets.  I am literally going to pull names from a hat.  I'll print all the tickets out, video myself pulling a lucky winner and post the video here.  I will also ship anywhere in the world at no cost.  Whatever proceeds this "lottery" pulls in I will personally match and it will all be donated to The Old Man for future dev work.

Buy/Sell/Trade / NES, GB, Genesis, Sega CD
10/19/2016, 09:22 AM
It all gone.  Many thanks.

Please excuse the fact that I haven't purchased a new computer since 2005 and am way out of date on this stuff...

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 7559
i7-6700HQ
16GB RAM (I added 8GB over what it came with)
NVIDIA GTX 960M
Windows 10

I decided to add RAM and a small 120GB Samsung 850 Evo M.2 as a boot drive.  I attempted to use Samsung's own Data Migration tool to clone the standard 1TB 5400 RPM HDD.  The computer recognized the new drive but when I started the cloning process an error occurred not long into it (I don't remember what the error said).  The only option was to accept the issues and reboot.  When I rebooted, Windows would not start and I get an error stating the issue may be do to a software or hardware change:
File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
Info: The boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors

The message states that it wants me to use my Windows 10 install DVD to restore the system.  This is impossible since this computer does not have an optical drive nor can I use the restore through Dell since I can't boot Windows to begin with.

First, I removed the SSD and Windows did reboot after performing a recovery.  Everything was fine.  I then re-installed the SSD and I get the same error and Windows will not boot.  I thought maybe with the SSD installed it was trying to boot from the SSD but, in the boot menu it appears to be trying to boot from the original HDD.

Again, please go easy on me as I am basically a reborn newb.  What the F do I do now?  Obiviously it's not a huge deal as I can get Windows to boot without the SSD installed but I would like to get Windows to boot with the SSD installed so I can wipe it and try again.  Suggestions?

So one of my friends and I are planning a new video featuring great/fun games that can be purchased for $10 or less.  With today's market I thought it would be really hard to come up with a few but I think a few videos could be made on the subject.  I'm trying to limit it to 128bit and older games.  We are picking 3 each to cover and review.

My tentative list at this point is: Air Fortress (NES), Kabuki Quantum Fighter (NES) and Streets of Rage 2 (Feka Genocide).

I know we had a thread similar to this a year or two ago but wanted to get opinions and have y'all talk about your favorite cheap games.

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTB a couple turbo posers
08/04/2016, 03:59 PM
Anyone still have these or are they still available?  I don't remember who I bought them from originally.  I gave all of mine to my friends.  I also no longer have a region modded system but want to use my recently acquired aecade card.  I also don't want to mod my Duo so this is the alternative.
#16
Anyone know of someone or a website that sells them?  My searching isn't getting me too far.
#18
I recently got a nice looking copy of Shape Shifter from evilbay and it would sort of play then lock up and the audio would intermittently stop or skip or not play.  I looked closer at the disc and found what appears to be some de-lamination/ holes in the foil.  I tried my home method of disc restoring and had it professionally done as well.  The result is the same.

So, does anyone have a copy they're willing to let go of?  I don't care if it's disc only as long as the damn thing plays.

Well, I acquired another broken TGCD drive with dock from a friend.  The middle gear was questionable but worked.  I recapped the drive and ended up having a bad laser as well.  I installed a new laser I had received from Keith Courage awhile back.  I dialed in the pots and played the crap out of it.  After sitting for about a week I went to test it again and found the drive wouldn't work.  Took it apart and found the middle gear was the culprit but it would work again if I bumped it free.  I decided to replace the gear being very careful not to lose the holding clip.  While re-installing the clip with the new gear in place I dropped it into the assembly somewhere.  The bitch is I've torn the thing completely apart and cannot find the clip anywhere and I've spent the last 2 hours or so trying to find it.

I am mucho pissed at myself right now.  So, how screwed am I?  Am I going to be forced to start buying up cheap CD mechanisms to find a suitable replacement or does somebody know of a source for one?

What games historically kick your ass or games have you never completed but still love to play?

Here are three of mine:
- Double Dragon on NES.  I can get to the final boss (if I'm lucky) but get my ass handed to me every time.  I have still never beaten this game.
- Contra Hard Corps.  I have owned this game since new.  I always loved playing it but could never beat it.  This year I finally changed that and have seen every possible ending.  It only took me 20 years to do it.
- Raiden on Turbografx.  I only recently acquired this game a couple months ago.  I can make it to the final level (sometimes) but quickly get destroyed.  I love this game because it's hard (at least to me it is) but, also hate it for the same reason.

Shot in the dark but I am looking for:

Type of controller doesn't matter, can be PCE or Turbo multi button etc.  I just need one more so I can play with four of my imaginary friends instead of just three.

I recently purchased a Turbografx CD dock and drive in pieces.  I want to try to rehabilitate it but do not have a system card to be able to fully test it with.  Just the standard U.S. 2.0 card is all I desire and see they run around $30 shipped on ebay.  While $30 isn't a ton of money I'm trying to find one as cheaply as possible (condition doesn't matter) just for testing purposes.  I figured I should be a cheap ass parasite and see if anyone here happened to have a spare they would let go for less before I break down and feed the ebay beast.  Thanks In advance!

I have available for sale a U.S. Turbo Duo.  Comes with original controller, power supply and A/V cables.  I have replaced all capacitors, cleaned and lubricated the laser drive and adjusted the pots.  I have played multiple games (including CD-R's) for extended periods of time and this console works perfectly.

This example is overall in good physical condition.  The only blemish is on the area above the Hucard slot  where someone decided it was a good spot to have tape racing stripes.

Price is $325.00 plus shipping.

If you could only have 1 console for the rest of your life what would it be?  I had to think about this for a minute but then my personal selection seemed obvious to me.  What console will give me the most amount of high quality games?

My answer, the Nintendo Wii.  Before you start laughing, hear me out.  Out of the box you have The entire Wii and Gamecube library (at least if you selected a Wii console before price cutting).  On top of that, the amount of software mods for this thing is vast.  It's a nice little emulation machine.  I can play everything from Atari 2600 to the 16 bit era (reliably).  The Nintendo Wii can literally play more games than I would have time to play for the rest of my life.  The MAME emulator is not the best but most of my favorite titles are certainly playable.  I can't think of any other console that could give me more.  On top of that I can play DVD's and stream youtube, netflix etc.

There you have it.  If I were to die only playing one console for the rest of my life, it would be the Nintendo Wii (running Wiimednafen to obey).

General Gaming / Homebrew Recommendations?
10/05/2015, 09:21 PM
I feel like my knowledge of homebrews is  fairly limited to NEC and some NES titles.  At this point I own most of the PCE/Turbo homebrews and Battle Kid on NES.  I for sure want to get Battle Kid 2, Mad Wizard and Rise of Amondus on NES.

I feel like my lack of knowledge on the subject my be starving me of some great home brew titles.  What kind of recommendations do you guys have for any console?

Well I had a bad HuC6280 in a PCE Duo that didn't allow some controller functions and suspect I have one worse off in a TG.

The TG16 unit just won't fire up at all.  With a game inserted I only get a blank yellow screen (I haven't gotten any other color but yellow).  I have cleaned the cart slot thoroughly.  I've checked continuity from each cart pin all over the board.  I have also checked continuity from HuC6280 to many places on the board thanks in part to the service manual.  I have also verified good grounds at pins 7, 16, 21, 48, 58 and 75.  I have also verified voltage to pins 8, 15, 19, 47, 57, and 76.  Voltage at those pins is 4.988 (same at 7805).  I suspect this is all good.

Anything else I should check?  I may toss this board into the dishwasher for shits only because I personally haven't seen one of these boards with so much flux on it from the factory.  Then, if there was no change, I was going to try replacing HuC6280.  Since doing this is such a pain, I just wanted to verify there aren't some other things I should check first.

A little while ago I won a raffle put on by BigusSchmuck for a couple of broken Mario games.  I received the package today and got right to work.  The first one I got cleaned up, repaired and working is this fine copy of Super Mario World.

This poor thing had been through WWII, and must have been left in a German gutter.  It was literally held together with duct tape on it's arrival.  After going through my specialized rehabilitation program this great little guy is ready to give someone hours of love and enjoyment.  This is where you kind souls come in.  You see, WWII vet Mario is homeless and is looking for someone to take him in, love and care for him.  If you believe you are responsible enough to adopt him please state your intent.  If you are unsure of this large commitment and would like to be a temporary foster parent (re-raffle when you're done with the game) that would be great too.  God bless.

General Gaming / Who has played Gunlord?
06/14/2015, 10:28 PM
So I have played a few of NG . DEV . TEAM's great shooters on the Dreamcast as my friends are big fans.  We were talking about them last night and my buddy says, "Hey they made a run and gun game for DC and Neo Geo."

I thought well hell, that's my shit and impulse purchased one on ebay.  Some of the videos I've seen it looks like Mega Turrican and Contra mated.  It looks awesome!

So my question is have any of you played it and what are your thoughts?
#32
Just as the title states, what is the first video game you ever purchased (with your own money)?

IMG

Don't laugh, but the first game I ever bought with my own money was none other than Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge on the NES.  Sure, I used to get money for Christmas and birthdays and such but that all had to go into a bank account.  I would get 50 cents at a time for doing household chores or if grandpa or someone would give me a dollar I could keep it.  Finally, in the summer of 1991 (I was 6) I had saved up $46 and some change.  I knew the only thing I wanted to buy with that money was a new NES game.

I didn't yet own a racing game but, had rented Days of Thunder and played Bill Elliott at a friend's house.  I really wanted to buy Days of Thunder because I thought it was so cool that you had to "pit" your car manually.  I also thought the graphics were "sweet".  Unfortunately, when we arrived at Toys R Us they were all out of Days of Thunder.  When you're 6 you just stick with what you know.  I knew I wanted a racing game and the only other one I knew of was Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge.  There was nothing like that smell of cracking open a brand new game.

Obviously, by today's standards this game is not very good.  I still love it though.  My only gripe is that the road courses are not even recognizable compared to real life because they just programmed them to be flat.  Other than that I don't have any major gripes.  I can really appreciate what the developers were trying to do with the minimal capabilities of the NES.  You could choose between 3 manufacturers and tune many parts of your car just like the modern simulation racers.  In fact, this game is probably what started my love for racing sims in the years to come.  I even once played and won a full distance "Daytona 500" in the game while my dad watched he actual 1992 Daytona 500.

Notable things about this game include: being the first officially licensed NASCAR game, the first game to feature the likeness and name of a real NASCAR driver and all of the manufacturer and sponsor licenses in the game.  Another fun fact is Daytona is a track that would not officially appear  in a NASCAR racing game again, until the release of NASCAR Racing 4 on PC in 2001.

General Gaming / Atari 7800?
01/27/2015, 07:01 PM
Does anyone have one of these and what is their experience with them?  I recently got the urge to bust out the old 2600 my father purchased new back in 78'.  Unfortunately, even my Sony Wega won't pick up the RF output on this thing.  To remedy this, I nabbed a cheap Vader 2600 I am doing a few mods to including composite video.  I am also converting a spare NES controller that will work on both the 2600 and 7800.

After looking around it appears there are some games that look pretty good for the 7800.  Since the 7800 is backwards compatible with the 2600 it only makes sense that I should pick one up.

Other than the crappy sound and small library are there any other negatives?  What are your guys' experience with these things.

Well.... I was out on a call for work and passed by an estate sale at a huge house.  I had to stop when I finished my call.  I'm glad I did because I found this for $15.00.

Does anyone know more about these because I am older t.v. illiterate.  It's a big ass Wega that has s-video and component in.  It also has all of the original paperwork and remote for a mere $15.00.  I bought it but am not going to pick it up until tomorrow.  Other than powering it up I didn't have time to really look it over.  Any information you guys have on these big boys would be a big help.

I know I'm not the only one who has ever experienced getting something in the mail that has been packaged horribly.  I'm already bitter because USPS lost a package of mine full of turbo goods a few weeks ago.  I have been looking for a Sonic 2 boxed Genesis for a little bit because it's the only box I'm missing from my childhood stuff.  I nabbed one on ebay a few days ago for cheap and this is how it arrived...

Please share some of your stories/ pictures to help make me feel better and not go postal.

I figured I'd post up and see if anyone has a spare they're looking to get rid of. I basically just need the loose console itself broken or not but I am hoping to find one in decent physical condition.  I would also buy a working unit too.  The cheapest I can find online are busted console only units from Japan at a total cost of over $40.00 Incl shipping.  This isn't horrible but I'm trying to get one for a bit less as I have Frankenstein plans for it and will be chopping it up a bit anyways.

Thanks in advance for any possible leads!

Just as the title says, what are some games universally regarded as being crap, that you love, and why?

Here are mine:
IMG

Spiritual Warfare.  Yeah, it is Wisdom Tree's finest.  Straight up Zelda clone set in modern times.  My Catholic grade school education pays off because answering questions about the Bible gives you power ups.  How can you not love enemies that drop to their knees and pray when you kill them?

Days of Thunder.  I love this movie.  The racing gets monotonous but this was the best NASCAR game available back in the day.  I love that you had to manually "pit" the car and that would determine the chance of winning or losing.  Plus, the damage the car can sustain and how it effects the car was ahead of it's time.

Hard Driving.  To this day the arcade version holds up as a great driving simulator.  I think this was the first arcade racer to feature a working clutch pedal.  If you have a sit down arcade of this for sale I am interested.  The graphics certainly haven't held up but VR in the late 80's early 90's was the shit.  Of course the console ports are not nearly as good as the arcade but that didn't stop me from putting hours into this game when I was a kid.

Terminator 2 Judgement Day (not arcade).  A game that actually followed the movie!  I even liked the NES version too.  This game is nothing special by today's standards or the standards of it's day but I still find it enjoyable.

Duke Nukem Forever.  Any self respecting fan of the OG Duke Nukem 3D on PC can't say that they hate this game.  It seriously looks and feels like that original masterpiece.  It doesn't hold up to today's FPS games but I don't care.  Playing this takes me right down memory lane.  Unfair deaths and WTF is killing me right now!? included.

I was recently talking to member cjameslv (he just completed a 2 controller port mod on a TG16) about the NES/Family hybrid I built awhile back.  He wanted a bit more info and so I decided to just make a post about it.

The idea came from a number of sources.  I had read about a project someone was working on about hard wiring a Famicom to NES converter to the NES motherboard in order to play NES and Famicom games on one console.  At the same time I was experimenting with a Famicom I had A/V modded but was having an issue getting rid of the "jail bar" distortion in the picture output.  During this time I accidentally fried something in the Famicom board.  Now that I had a parts Famicom I figured I could hard wire the factory 60 pin connector to the NES mother board and maybe even spruce up the outside molding the features I love about both of Nintendo's 8-bit consoles.

NOTE* Please ignore the sloppy wiring, this was in my early days of modding and I was using spare low voltage control wire I got for free from work (I still use it because it's still free).

Here, I have the Famicom's 60 pin connector wired to the NES mother board and was testing for proper operation.  This is easy because there are a million resources on the web to compare what pins are used for each function on both the Famicom and NES.  I just followed the cartridge pins on the NES motherboard back to the easiest spot to add a connection.

2 features I love on the famicom is the built in controller holders and the cartridge ejector.  The famicom top needed to be shortened in order to line up with the NES top that it would be attached to (with screws using the factory famicom mounting points.  About 1/2" section was removed where the power and reset buttons normally go.  The 60 pin connector still screws into this top piece as it would normally.  Here is where I was test fitting the Famicom top to the NES top.  There are a few other minor things that had to be trimmed for it to sit flat.  I love dremel tools!  Also, I cut the bottom half of the O.E. NES door off and flipped it upside down.  I bored new holes in the NES top to accept the door upside down.

In order to still gain access to NES carts more clearance was needed.  I molded hinges into the famicom's top to allow the "snout" to flip open.  I considered using Velcro to hold the doors closed but instead opted for magnets so it would be easy to open (with the flick of a finger)

After everything was test fitted and working like I wanted I masked and painted the parts.  I progressively sanded all plastics from 800, 1000 then 1500 grit sand paper and primed with duplicolor sandable primer.  After primer I wet sanded in 1500 to 2000 grit.  I used duplicolor 2x paints (4 coats).  After the paint was dry for a few days I wet sanded with 1500 and 2000 grit again.  I then used automotive scratch remover polish followed by a carnauba wax to seal and bring out the shine.  The only part I intentionally "wrinkled" the paint was the NES door.  I wanted to give it a similar texture to factory.  I did this by leaving some droplets of water on the door when I painted it.

The only other small mods completed were:
Lockout chip disabled
"Stereo" sound mod with mixing
Bright power LED and 5 additional internal LED's for lighting.
Standard NES controller cords/plugs wired to the Famicom controllers (player 1 Famicom controller board is identicle to the NES')
Extra Famicom sound channel added

So there it is.  Reliving this project really makes me want to do another extensive console mod.

Everything has been sold.  Thank you everyone!  A mod can lock down this bad boy.

General Gaming / The Nuclear Option.

(As defined by my friend Scott) The nuclear option as it relates to collecting is getting rid of something you love or getting rid of a large part of your collection that took a significant amount of time to acquire.

I have recently been entertaining the idea of off loading a large chunk of my NES collection.  I enjoy and own many videogame platforms and only buy games I know I want or ones I want to try.  The only exception to this rule, for me, has been the NES.  I always thought it would be awesome to own the entire publicly released library.  I currently have a bit more than 450 of the NES releases.

I have been fortunate to acquire a bunch of Genesis games that I have always wanted and realized I only have a handful more that I really want.  Breaking it down even further I realized there are only a handful more games I actually want for most of the platforms I play.

Since I was 5 years old the NES has been my go to console and I have always adored it.  I never realized that when I purchased a TurboGrafx console that it would actually rival my love for the NES.  This fact has caused me to play less and less of my NES.  I also have realized that there are so many NES games I own, that I will never play again.  These titles are all horrible games or games that just have low replay value.  Because of this I think I could slash my NES collection down to say 150 games that I really enjoy.  I could then use the proceeds of selling the other 300 carts to purchase the last few games I really want for the other platforms I own.

I'm torn on this because I have a lot of time and good memories in building that NES collection to what it is.  What are your guys' thoughts?  The answer seems clear but my NES collectarditis keeps making me second guess.

Has anyone else had a similar situation in any sort of collecting, and if so, what did you do?

I have a bit of a strange problem I have found no info on and wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem.  About 1 year ago I scored a dock base with the original power supply.  A few months later I sourced a CDrom2 to add to it.  There was always some light video distortion and a lot of sound distortion when the lens was moving to read the disk.  Once loaded everything is perfect.

My CDrom2 was cheap and noisy so I always figured it had issues.  Recently, I decided to fix up that CD ROM and my dock.  I did a full recap on the dock and CD ROM, shortly after the laser went out on my CDrom2 so I replaced with a good "low mileage" laser and adjusted the pots.  Everything was working fine but I still had the same distortion.

The CDrom2 had been converted to a 2 gear drive setup and I figured that caused the drive motor to work s bit harder.  I even suspected the drive motor was on it's way out so I replaced it with one I knew was quiet.  Still no change.

I decided to just live with it but suspected the 2 gear drive setup may be causing a bit more amp draw on the drive motor, thus causing the distortion.  Just today I received a good working TG CD ROM from Jelloslug.  The CD unit itself is more quiet but I still have the video and sound distortion.  This means my problem must be in the dock itself.

I was thinking about adding caps to the direct lines going into the a/v jacks but I figured I'd check with the gurus here and see if they've dealt with something like this before.

I am currently seeking out a busted TG CD ROM.  I really just need the outer casing so internal workings are of little concern for me.  Of course, I would be interested in a functioning unit if the price/ trade is right.

I have also been on the look out for a PCE Duo or TurboDuo that has issues or a non-working CD drive.  I have a PCE Duo with a perfectly working drive and want to try and combine parts to have 1 good unit.
