Quote from: fragmare on 12/03/2014, 12:49 AMI think the whole debate between Shinobi 3 and Ninja Spirit is really a debate over which genre of game you like better... action platformer or run-n-gun sidescroller.  For me, the answer is easy... I'll take stuff like Contra, Ninja Spirit, and Gunstar Heroes over Shinobi any day of the week.  Apparently my son will too lol  :)
This is true. But when I said more refined, I mean in the scope of its own game, not as in they are in the same genre and this one has better play mechanics than the other etc. I mean the game feels polished to a much finer degree than Ninja Spirit...but I think time of release has a lot to do with that as well, with more competition and harvesting ideas from other games etc.

If you like games like Ninja Spirit more than Shinobi and your son does too does that mean it is something inherited :D Which means this isn't objective at all, it's all in the genes, he has to like it by his very nature :D

This trailer is like an ankle shot on a sexy woman...shows nothing you want to see.

It's pretty hard for me to be objective about Shinobi 3...it's one of my favourite Megadrive games. Ninja Spirit is good and is a game I loved as a kid (not PCE, but the Amiga version), but to me (with a lot of nostalgia added) Shinobi 3 wins. It just feels like a more refined game than Ninja Spirit.

Personally, I find all Darius games to be a little harder than the average shooter on the first try. Patience and memorisation is the key.

First time I've ever heard of it. I've seen it before with discs left in direct sunlight for ages (a year+) but I always thought it was the UV/heat that did it.
#106
Nice little update. Definitely looks less intimidating for beginners than the old design.
#107
My favourite would have to be either Manji Maru or Kabuki Den, both are awesome. Ziria is very much the root of the series (being the first) and it sets standards that are refined in later games.

Quote from: esteban on 10/05/2014, 09:29 AMYou guys suck!

Time for an update.

I haven't seen Blade Runner for 20+ years and I'm going to watch it SOON.

BUT, I wanted to finish reading Dick's "Do Androids..."

Well, I finally finished the classic that I started reading in the 80's...I can't believe it took me this long. It's been on my "to do" list for decades:

 IMG

Now I am going to watch the film. From what I remember, the film definitely makes some changes (for the better) and both film and novel stand on their own ground.

ALSO: I read the guide for TurboPoser!

BOTTOM LINE: Grab a TurboPoser and read some Dick today.  IMG
Excellent book and film. I like to look at the film as 'Inspired by Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' rather than the film version of the book. Like you say, each feels different from the other, but I do prefer the book.

At the moment I'm reading Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami. Stunning like all of his other works.

Sengoku 2 is hard to find. Voltage Fighter is uncommon, same as World Heroes Perfect but nowhere near the level of Sengoku 2. Nam-1975 I've found to be pretty cheap on MVS (around £30).

Data East used the HuC6280 for loads of arcade games, but as said above mainly for sound. In addition to the games listed above they used it on their Caveman Ninja-based games, as on this page http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=944.

There are more on the page at System 16. Not sure if any other company used it on their boards.

Sengoku is cheap as well. I think Magician Lord is the exception rather than the rule. The price went mad a few years ago and has stuck that way. I saw people paying £80 for an MVS cart, at the same time the AES cart (boxed, complete, no cracks on the plastic) was going for £35-£40.

Off-Topic / Re: Scotland (WTF)
09/18/2014, 07:06 AM
All this has happened because the British Government refuses to give more power to the Scottish Parliament (unlike Wales, work that out). More likely than not it is because Wales doesn't have a lot of natural resources unlike Scotland which has the largest amount of oil from any UK country. They should have been given the powers years ago then stuff like this wouldn't happen.

To be honest, I think it's the wrong thing to do and it will impact things like jobs in Scotland and even push the cost of living up as several companies have already stated they will 'most likely' raise prices in Scotland if they do independent because it is then a different region to the rest of the UK.

Ah well, we'll find out tomorrow.

Quote from: Medic_wheat on 09/16/2014, 05:13 PMNot sure what the current price is for Saga. Will most likely buy rhe import as it's dirt cheap.
The going rate in the UK is around £150-£200. JP PDS is very cheap. Lots of guides about as well. I'm sure there was some special code you have to put in the action replay import converter cart to get it working correctly. Not a problem if you got a region modded or JP Saturn though.

General Gaming / Re: AES or MVS?

As said above, AES and MVS are completely region free, they will default to the language of the BIOS (so if you buy a JP machine and buy a US cart, the game will still be in Japanese). With the MVS converter the same principle applies.

Magic Knight Rayearth and Guardian Heroes are awesome games. Soon enough the price of Saturn games will be so high you'll have to trade a Magical Chase just to get a Panzer Dragoon Saga... :(

Quote from: ParanoiaDragon on 09/06/2014, 01:40 AMAlso, Rise of Mana is coming to Vita.  I don't know a whole lot about it.  If it's atleast as good as Sword of Mana, then I'll be midly happy, but I'd rather it be as good as Seiken Densetsu 2 or 3!
Not that would be good! As far as I've read it is/was originally an iOS/Android game, so my hopes are held that high, unfortunately.

Quote from: Niko49 on 09/04/2014, 09:25 AM4.) Multislot cabs and multislot boards are NOT JAMMA, but a variation that has stereo sound. Only the single slot boards, and cabs are JAMMA. Some single slot boards however are capable of outputing stereo via a header on the board or a 2.5mm headphone jack.
Pretty easy to solve this by an adapter (either MVS > JAMMA, or vice versa). 6 Slots are definitely the most failure prone (2 6 slots, 2 with faults), but the 4 slots I've had have always been solid.

The best MVS converter, IMO, is the MVS Magic Key. The latest version has very good compatibility and the scaling issue has been fixed. It also has region changing and a cheat menu built-in.

R-Type, for me, defines IREM at the time period of the PCE. It was, and still is, awesome. If R-Type was banned from the vote for being too awesome then it would have to be Image Fight.

Quote from: bust3dstr8 on 09/01/2014, 09:21 PMI agree with Cy that $900 is a bit high for that cab, but sometimes having the stuff all ready done for you is worth the premium price. Depending on where you are you can wait months or years to find a decent deal just to have the flyback or something else shit out on you two weeks later.

If you go by current market for the stuff your looking at...($400 for a good cab-if the EL panels work it's a goddamn miracle, $150 for monitor rebuild, $150 for the games and $50 for new controls)....so shoot the guy a $750 offer and see if it sticks.
This. Especially if it's your first cabinet. You want it to work and not have to mess about with it in a months' time. Yeah the cab is a little on the expensive side, but if the monitor has just been refurbed (new flyback/caps, tweaked etc) then you should be good for a while.

I dumped my AES for MVS about two years ago because the AES games were just breaking the bank, and I've never looked back to be honest. With the money I got from selling the AES stuff I got a six slot cabinet and quite a few carts of games that I would never own on AES (Metal Slug, Sengoku 3 etc).

Look, I'm just trying to get a decent value on this. I already own 2 Sealed NIB turds with just one sealed bottle of urine. I want a fair price for this or a decent trade.

But seriously, if you want a value on it do as suggested, put it on ebay for 7 days at 0.99 and see what you get.

Have you tried a HuCard/CD to see if you are getting any activity from the unit itself. Could be an AV port or output problem.

Got a cheap-o copy of Cosmic Fantasy 2 sealed a couple of years ago...it wasn't sealed for for long when I had it. Only sealed Turbo game I've ever owned/opened.

It is almost the Dreamcast of the hand held market. Great library for such a short amount of time, new ideas (admittedly the stick was awesome but didn't catch on (unless you count analogue, which I won't)) and really fun to play. The screen is the only issue but if you have it front-lighted it's pretty nice.

Quote from: slinkyturd on 08/15/2014, 10:16 AMI honestly wouldn't put Neo Geo or TurboGrafx on the tops lists. I think an argument can be made that because either weren't well received, that they weren't able to reach their fullest potential and therefore are incomplete. Granted both are amazing as they stand. It's just that both could've been so much better.
How could the Neo Geo not have reached its fullest potential? It was in arcade rotation (with new games) from 1990-2004. It was is the longest running arcade hardware (and home console). How could that not reach its fullest potential. The Dreamcast, on the other hand, was cut short. That didn't reach its fullest potential.

Anyway, my favourite console (outside of anything Obey related) would be a toss up between Megadrive, SNES/Super Famicom and the Saturn. Although, from a logical perspective, the PS2 is probably the best console ever (great library with access to the PS1 library as well) those three are my favourites.

I've done this dishwasher/oven technique before with arcade PCBs that were dirty. Works a treat and they come out looking almost new. Although I never put any detergent in when I chuck mine in, don't suppose it will do any damage if you use a little though.

Quote from: Medic_wheat on 08/05/2014, 10:20 PMAlso with two keys guys who worked on resident evil remake and zero why not do them both and bundle them on one disk?

Ah, haven't seen it yet. I've been meaning to watch it but haven't got round to it. It seems to be very similar in style to Graveyard of the Fireflies (which I really enjoyed but its a film that's hard to watch over and over again).

It would be a loss if they shut down completely. I know Miyazaki's son get's a lot of flak but I actually enjoyed Tales of Earthsea that he took the lead on. I think he just needs a little more experience and he'll be able to take over quite competently.

The problem is, here in the UK our summers generally consist of a week of sunshine where everyone complains about it being too hot, then three months of rain where everyone complains about it raining.

And yes, it is a bit too hot for my liking on the south coast of England and has been for the past three weeks.

Quote from: elderbroom on 07/21/2014, 04:26 PMI am interested in collecting at least cic for all the titles I had as a teenager, or wanted as a teenager.  I am loving the Everdrive .. but still have a desire to own, and display all these titles that hold a nostalgic value for me.  But do now feel that I can sit back, and wait to find the titles I want at a reasonable price. Is this approach that uncommon ?
This is the best approach to take nowadays what with traders/flippers on ebay trying to sell £10 games at £30 or more. Look at it this way, if you hadn't bought the everdrive and you really wanted to play those games and paid (just a random guess) $140 for them when they are only worth $50-$70 wouldn't you feel ripped off/cheated?

If you didn't feel ripped off, when you announced how much you bought them for in this thread then you would have  :D

It is pretty hard to separate them as two individual games, but if I had to choose it'll be Ys II just for the shift in gameplay focus.

Today I've finally fixed my Alien Vs Predator CPS2 board. So I've been playing that. Really nice and never got a home conversion. Just waiting on my Cowboys of Moo Mesa PCB to turn up so I can have a blast on that. Nothing Obey related (I know, I know)

It's a nice game. It's meant to be a sequel to Aurail as well, which is a nice arcade shooter.

It's not common on a Coregrafx system, but it could be the electrolytics in the audio section (or the amp). I'd check the AV cable first though.

Quote from: Opethian on 07/07/2014, 04:22 PMIt is unfair to compare it to games that were released 15+ years ago in a time where the genre was hot and standing out was a challenge. Look at what RGPs are not now. THat is my basis of the experience.

It sad that they could not survive like the Dragon Quest series has. I love them all and I wish I had a way to play DQ X stateside.
It is unfair, I understand what you're saying, but the comparison is going to happen. And it's not to say Bravely Default is bad by any means but it feels like they've stretched every moment to the extremes to make it a 60+ hour game when it could have been more succinctly told in 30 hours.

There may be hope with DQX, it's been announced (albeit a streaming service, the same as with smartphones) for 3DS. Hopefully this means they'll think a but more about releasing it in the US/Europe.

Quote from: Opethian on 07/05/2014, 05:53 PMBravely Default is the new experience. Final Fantasy died many years ago
Bravely Default is nice but I think it's been given such praise because there really isn't a Final Fantasy (or other JRPG series) to challenge it. Compare it to FF4,5,6? It doesn't stack up favourably. The game is too slow paced and drawn out. Everything takes ages to do. Not that I don't like Bravely Default, I do, I just don't think it's that good.
#143
I remember seeing a bunch of PC engine games at the same time in a magazine. I remember Bonk, Drunken Master (The Kung Fu) and R-Type being among them. R-Type was the one that really made me want one, back at a time when arcade perfect was something to strive for not something that just happened.
#144
IX is good but it is extremely sluggish (especially when the mist is about on the world map) which put me off replaying it more than twice. It was good though. Surprisingly one of my favourites was/is V.

I remember seeing pics of it in a magazine with information about a release date but it never happened. About 1999 I picked up the cart from a game shop in London and really enjoyed it. The story is quite sparse but I thought the overall experience was really enjoyable.
#145
There used to be a time I cared. I cared during FF2 & FF3 (SNES numbering) and FF7-FF9. During the Playstation days (when I was old enough to not have to rely on my parents to buy me games) I bought FF7 & 8 Japanese and again in English (my Japanese is only really basic at best). Final Fantasy 9 I enjoyed although it was absolutely sluggish. FF10 was okay, not great. I didn't like 12 and however much I was looking forward to 13, it disappointed me immensely (and all of the spin-offs of 13 as well).

Square just don't make games like they used to. I enjoyed the Romancing Saga series on SFC. Anyone play Unlimited Saga on PS2? If you haven't, don't.
#146
I really like Dead Moon, but I get what you're saying about it feeling soul-less. It just feels like a little something is missing, maybe character? The levels feel a little generic but with the parallax and the music it does add up. If anyone were to ask if they should pick it up I'd definitely recommend it and I don't think they'd be disappointed.

Shin Megami Tensei IV, Devil Survivor Overclocked and Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers would be my top 3 picks for 3DS if I picked one up today. Bravely Default is good and so is Etrian Odyssey IV (and Untold Story), Fire Emblem, Kirby, New Yoshi's Island.

@Medic_wheat - Eternal Sonata is a PS3/Xbox360 game.
