Anyone seen this?

I just stumbled on this today, although it looks like that video has been up forever. This is something I never knew about. Looks like I'll need to add First Kiss to my list of PC-FX games to buy. Music by Ts Music!

I've moved this thread to pcengine-fx.com - The NEC Console Resource, since "Comments and Suggestions" is hardly the appropriate place for it.

Off-Topic / Black Sabbath Poll
02/17/2012, 08:34 PM
With the talks of an upcoming Sabbath reunion album, I've been revisiting some of their catalog being the classic metal fan that I am. It begs the question.... which lineup is best? I've included only what I consider the three "real" Sabbath lineups here, the lineups that at least 3/4 of the band was usually made up of original members.

I don't consider any of the late 80s stuff to be "real" Black Sabbath, where Tony Iommi is the only actual Sabbath member and the rest of the band is sort of made up of a rotating cast of characters. These are basically Iommi solo albums marketed under the Sabbath label for financial and/or contractual reasons.

The Dio lineup gets my vote. The three (four if you count the album The Devil You Know, released under the "Heaven & Hell" label) albums they released are musically and lyrically just spectacular. Dio's voice fits the Sabbath soundscape better than either of the other guys, plus he can actually sing. The band has never sounded tighter than it does on these albums. Also, this lineup recorded three new tracks for a 2007 Sabbath Best-of compilation, and proved time can't touch the amazing talent of these guys. It's some pretty amazing consistency, especially considering the span of time (27 years).

Gillan lineup would be my second choice. They only did one album, but boy was it a killer. This lineup might have actually been my number one had they released more material, and had it been up to par with the Born Again album. Ian Gillan (originally of Deep Purple) is a great singer, although he's not quite as good a fit IMO as Dio. He sings the Ozzy songs better than Ozzy, though.

Ozzy is my third choice. I don't particularly like Ozzy Osborne, as a person, or as a singer. He can't really sing, hence the invention of the trademark Ozzy double-tracked vocals. He's a doofus. Even my dislike of Ozzy can't deny the musicianship of the other members, however, and they did some really good stuff with him in the band. I feel a lot of it was overexposed and has been given more attention over the years than it probably deserves. The Born Again album, for example, is better than most of what the band did with Osbourne. Nobody knows this, though, because only the radio-friendly Ozzy singles ever get any airplay.

I have to say I'm less than excited about these upcoming "reunion projects" (Sabbath, Van Halen, etc). Ozzy never could sing, and the fact that he's now nine hundred and five certainly won't be helping matters. I'm idly interested to see what they come up with on the off chance they're able to generate another "Paranoid." I guess since Ronnie James Dio is dead and isn't around for another reunion this is the next best thing.

Welcome to part 1 of my big housecleaning/need cash sale. Over the coming days new items will be added as I have time. Look for some neat stuff here soon. I'm trying to drum up some $$ fairly quickly due to some shitty unforseen domestic problems.

Pictures of anything not pictured can be provided upon request. Prices do not include shipping. I'd prefer not to ship international due to past issues, but I'll take it on a case-by-case basis.

Because I'm trying to get this stuff moved as quickly as possible, anything not sold in 2 or 3 days will go straight to eBay.

Bundle #1 $10+shipping OBO -
Stack of 27 PCE spine cards, and 34 registration cards. I don't have the time to part these out individually, so you get them all. Spines I know you'll find in this stack: Madou Monogatari, Valis I, Fatal Fury 2, Fatal Fury Special, Anearth Fantasy Stories, Legend of Xanadu, Pop 'n Magic, and many others. Please don't ask me if I have this or that, this bundle is what it is. Don't like the price, make me an offer.

Item #1 MAKE OFFER -

I no longer have the PC-FX that matches this box, so maybe one of you has it now.

ACEMORE Freedom Wireless Joystick: This is a USA wireless joystick for the TurboGrafx-16. Won't work with NEC's wireless receiver as far as I know, it needs its own. The joystick is in near mint condition and worked the last time I used it (5+ years ago). I will provide the receiver as well, but it doesn't work currently. I mean, it probably works, but I tried wiring up a custom cable for it years ago and I couldn't figure out the pinout. I gave up before completion. If you can figure out the pinout and wire up a cable for it, I'm sure it'll work again. Items are loose (no box). MAKE OFFER

That's all for the moment. Look for this list to expand significantly in the next day or so.

Nintendo 64 - What an utter failure in all regards.

Extremely poor 3D graphics when viewed in retrospect (not that they were a real treat at time of release). To make matters worse, the console features, like, less than 10 2D games (OK, maybe 20). That means 95% of the console's library looks like shit visually. Some of the best games on the system are 2D: Mischief Makers, Bomberman Arcade (the 2D one, not that Bomberman 64 shit), Magical Tetris Challenge, the Bust-A-Move series, etc. So much un-tapped 2D potential.

A severely limited storage medium. Who the fuck was still using cartridges exclusively in 2000? Nintendo, that's who. One of the worst marketing decisions of ALL TIME. While companies like NEC were producing CD games as early as the 1980s, Nintendo didn't catch on until almost 15 years later.

The hardware deficiencies don't stop there. The Nintendo 64 also has the distinct honor of featuring the worst controller design of ALL TIME. The analog thumbsticks all went limp after less than a year of use. You had to place your left hand on a completely different grip depending on whether or not you were using the analog stick or the d-pad. The memory card slot on the controllers were extremely touchy; if you didn't have the memory card inserted JUST RIGHT there was a 50% chance you could say goodbye to all your save files. To top it all off, the controllers had the build quality of a cheap TODDLER'S TOY. It boggles the mind the same company who just a few years prior produced one of the best controllers in the video game universe (SNES) stumbled to this level.

Insufficient RAM meant anything beyond mediocre 3D (for the time, it could be argued all N64 3D is mediocre at best, anymore) rendered at sluggish framerates unless you purchased a memory expansion.

Game library was relatively small by comparison to its older siblings (NES and SNES), with far less diversity in genres. A lot of the 3D games are downright awful; you can't even tell what the hell is going on in a handful of them due to broken camera mechanics and muddy, pixelated "textures." Mario 64 was actually a promising effort, but even Mario suffered from some camera issues. Super Mario Kart is also a decent game... If you're playing it in one or two-player mode. By the time you get three-or-four players involved, the low-resolution polygons in the 4-way split-screen just don't cut it and it's often difficult to see what's coming until it's too late.

I'm personally amazed the N64 did as "well" as it did. I believe this had a lot to do with the fact Nintendo was riding high on the success of the console's forerunners. Kids ran out and bought it on release based only the fact it was a new Nintendo product. The Playstation One didn't exactly blow it out of the water in the 3D department, but the library was gigantic, with lots more 2D games to boot.

The GameCube turned out to be a much, much better console design-wise but still suffered from a poor-ish game library. The Wii is arguably Nintendo's best console to date. Not only does it offer hardware support to play GC games, it will also play N64, SNES, and NES titles via emulation. You're talking about nearly 30 years of software on a single console. By comparison, the N64 will play 4 or 5 years worth of some of the most mediocre games Nintendo ever produced.

The contest has come to an end.... Here are the final rankings:

319,010 - incrediblehark
315,440 - nat
311,260 - Arkhan
287,010 - jlued686
280,940 - BlueBMW
147,060 - PCEngineFX

Thanks to all who participated. I'm disappointed SuperDeadite and neofan decided not to participate despite initially showing interest.

Congrats to incrediblehark on the score. The way I figure it, if you play the level perfectly your high score probably maxes out at around 320,000-325,000. I'm not sure much beyond that is possible unless there is a major bonus I'm not aware of.

Aaron, looks like it's time to brush up on your Zeroigar skills.

Staff / deleting posts
03/04/2011, 08:18 PM
It's been suggested non-moderators should not be able to delete their own posts, and I'm beginning to agree.

The problem arises when a user deletes one of his/her posts, and it's the first post in a thread. This removes the entire thread.

There was also a situation where an ex-member quoted a current member, edited the quote, and then deleted the thread (because his post was the first one) so all evidence of what the current member had actually said was gone. All that was left was the edited misquote.

Bottom line, I think the ability to delete posts and threads should be for moderators and admins only. Users being able to edit their own posts is sufficient-- this will prevent entire threads from disappearing if someone decides to have a temper tantrum.

Due to popular demand the below text has been made into it's own thread and stickied for easy reference.

The series started as the "Wonderboy" series, as developed by Westone for SEGA. Due to licensing issues what with SEGA retaining the rights to the "Wonderboy" name and Westone retaining rights to the actual game, the games are named something different on nearly every platform they were ported to. Sometimes they even differ in name on the same platform, between regions.

Without going into things too much, here's a quick legend for you:

Wonderboy (1st game)
Wonderboy (SMS)
Adventure Island (NES)

Wonderboy in Monsterland (2nd game)
Super Wonderboy in Monsterland (SMS)
Bikkuriman World (PCE/TG16 JP)

Wonderboy III: Monster Lair (3rd game)
Wonderboy III: Monster Lair (PCE/TG16 JP, Genesis)
Monster Lair (PCE/TG16 US)

The Dragon's Trap (4th game)
Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap (SMS US)
Monster World II (SMS JP)
Adventure Island (PCE/TG16 JP)
Dragon's Curse (PCE/TG16 US)

Wonderboy V: Monster World III (5th game)
Wonderboy V: Monster World III (Genesis JP)
Wonderboy in Monster World (Genesis US)
Dynastic Hero (PCE/TG16 both regions)

There are other platforms these games appeared on, but I listed the main/most common ones here. Only the first game saw a port on the NES. Speaking of the first game, it's also the only game that didn't make it to the PCE/TG16. The Turbo game New Adventure Island is very similar to the first Wonderboy, and it could be viewed as a "remake" of the original with greatly improved graphics (added parallax) and level changes. Some of the level cues are taken directly from the first game but it's not a straight port by any means.

As you can see from the list, "Adventure Island" on the NES and "Adventure Island" on the PCE were actually ports of different games in the series. You might also know that 3 sequels were made on the NES (Adventure Island 2, 3 & 4). These games have nothing to do with the "Wonderboy" series and were spin-offs done by Hudson (not Westone). This spin-off series continued on the SNES and eventually the Wii.

There was a 6th game on the Genesis called "Monster World IV." The "Wonderboy" name was dropped from the title on that final game (probably because the hero is a girl) so it's technically not a part of the series.

Here's a homebrew suggestion for all you coders out there who are looking for something to tackle.

Modify the R-Type ROM to take advantage of the extra VDC in the SGX. As we all know, the flicker in R-Type is atrocious. I'd love to see someone modify the existing game to use the 2nd VDC for half the sprites, thus eliminating the flicker. You know... the same way the Darius hybrid cartridge does.

It's too bad Bonknuts doesn't log in here anymore as this seems like something he'd be all over.

For years I thought the PCE compatibility switch on the SuperGrafx served no purpose other than to disable SuperGrafx games from playing properly. Basically, a useless feature. The other day I discovered the first game that doesn't play right unless you have the switch set to PCE mode: Darius 2. I'd like to keep a list here of all the games that require this switch to be set and what the issues are if it is not. I'm curious how many games out there require it. It doesn't seem like there are many.

Darius 2 - Graphical artifacts in the lower right hand corner of the screen during most levels. Video cuts out completely during the boss fight with "LEADAIN." The only way to recover from this is to power cycle the system.

Tadaima Yusha Boshuuchuu - No video at all.

General Gaming / YouTube & Wii
10/10/2010, 03:16 AM
I used to use YouTube on my Wii all the time, but it's been 6 months, give or take, since the last time I tried it. Now it no longer works-- it tells me I need to download Adobe Flash Player which is, of course, impossible on the Wii. I Googled this issue but couldn't find any mention of it at all. Just random other playback issues, most of which dated 2009 or earlier (at which time YouTube was working fine for me). I know there have been a few firmware updates I've downloaded since the last time I used YouTube on it.... Did one of these disable the video functionality, or is my Wii fucked up some how? I was under the impression Flash was integrated into the browser on the Wii.

Anyone remember the Spriggan contest we had on these forums four or five years ago? I was thinking of doing something similar, this time with Zeroigar, but we need enough people to make it worthwhile.

The game has a nice 2 minute mode that would be perfect for such a contest. The 2 minute mode is scored a little differently than, say, Spriggan as in Zeroigar you're given a finite number of "super weapons" right from the start that all share a common "energy meter." The catch is, your final bonus is tallied by how much of this meter is left unused + how much life you have left.

So... who's got a PC-FX? And who's got Zeroigar? A PC-FX is really the only "must" as there are, uh, ways to get ahold of Zeroigar.

I haven't played this game much at all-- I just got it last year. Here's my current best score, not sure how it stacks up in the grand scheme of things. I can imagine super high scores are possible in this game once you get proficient at racking up extra balls in the bonus rounds.
