I just picked up a copy of Legend of Xanadu and am really looking forward to diving into it. Any advice for a non-Japanese speaker?

Quote from: Paul on 08/10/2011, 04:43 PMI had like a 4 hour conversation with RR last night.. so really got some insight into the system. Everything is being shipped, should have it all the next 2-3 weeks. I know you guys will rag on me but I am strictly sticking to the HuCards right now
Nothing wrong with HuCards if you ask me. A lot of folks like to poo-poo anything not on a CD around here, but by doing that they are missing out on some great games. I'd vote for one of the two Neutopia titles and and the Legendary Axe games.

My 2ยข: Cased game with manual (and/or map) and sleeve (if a HuCard) is required. I don't really care about the cardboard box, as it'd just be too much cash in the long run and the boxes are pretty flimsy.

Just curious to know how many folks on here are just here because they like the CD ROM classics and not so much the HuCard titles. Why are you here? Let us know!

Quote from: guest on 07/05/2011, 10:35 PMDid the express have any expansions lines or leads like the regular PCE units? I keep imagining it might be possible to construct a save unit for one.
While a save unit would be AWESOME (and I'd buy one pretty much immediately), I've found that taking a picture of codes with my phone works great, too. That way you always have the codes with you and there's little room for error in copying them down.

Quote from: IDCHAPPY on 06/30/2011, 11:08 AMI must admit to shooting in my pants over these when they first came out, now after getting my Duo R i have my eye on then again. Be handy for testing some games too without having to plug and unplug the R(so the kids dont mess with it).
Any thoughts?  :D
Absolutely, get it! Sure, the caps will likely need to be replaced - and the pixel density is low by today's standards, but it's a seriously amazing machine - and when you remember that it was released in 1990, you'll be even more amazed.

A couple of suggestions to make your Express/GT experience even better:

1. Invest in the Aneloop batteries. They provide a good 4-6 play time and charge quickly.

2. Get a Neo PCE-Flash card. While the compatibility of ROM files can be iffy, find about 10 games that you like and that work and you have a library of great games on one card. Just makes it all that much more portable.

3. Find someone on here to replace your caps - video and sound. I have a GT that I didn't even realize was full of leaky caps, until I plugged in the headphones and only one side was giving sound. You want your GT or Express to be in top working condition. BlueBMW did an awesome job replacing the caps on my GT.

And finally, 4. Either get a converter (good luck finding one that isn't outrageously priced) or find a place that sells a duel boot GT or Express. I bought one from a great guy in Hong Kong. He sells systems that can play PC Engine or Turbo Grafx games with the click of a switch. I'm sure there are plenty of guys on here who could do the same at a cheaper price that buying overseas. Red Ghost does a great job at modding stuff!

Hope that helps.

Quote from: BlueBMW on 05/05/2011, 04:32 PMA centralized location for repair info might be cool.
Blue, yeah, that would be cool. Seeing how I have zero experience in the repair/mod arena, I'd definitely have to work together with some of the awesome crew here.

I'm a big fan of Racketboy.com and what Nick has been able to do with the site. While it does have a general retro-gaming focus, I'm disappointed with the overall coverage of the Turbo/PC Engine. I think the basic idea I see for Push Run Button is taking that "retro gaming lifestyle" angle and really specialize it to NEC hardware.

I hear your point. The problem would be the investment of getting an inventory to sell games. Then you have the problem of getting games at a fair price without spending a ton of time at flea markets and yard sales - just to sell on the site.

I guess I'm thinking about something different from a review site. The Brothers' site is pretty much unbeatable as far as that goes.
#9
Better investment than real estate, I'd say.

Not sure if this has been talked about before, but I've noticed this eBay listing a few times. This guy is asking so much, yet completely vague in description and images of the items he's selling.

Is he serious?

I recently picked up this domain name with the intention of doing a little blog and review sort of project with it. Was wondering, though, if there is something that the community here would like to see incorporated into it.

There was talk in another thread about acquiring tzd.com (the old Turbo Zone Direct domain) and creating a buying/selling/repair sort of site. The negotiations apparently didn't go well with the current owner of the domain. I'm not sure if I want pushrunbutton.com to be heavy into the e-commerce segment (at least as far as selling/buying games/system - seems like eBay is the dominant player here). What could be cool is to have some centralized resource for repair and mod services.

Anyhow, what are your thoughts? I'd want this to become something that, while small, would be a useful resource with a different slant to what other Turbo/PCE sites have to offer currently.

I literally bought the Gates of Thunder 3-in1 CD a couple of months ago for $35 with case and all three manuals. I saw that listing yesterday and showed a friend - got a good laugh. And the crazy thing, that was an AUCTION, not some douche overpricing a Buy It Now.

I'm just really surprised that the American stuff that is fetching big cash.
#13
Seems like all the Tubo stuff is on a price hike. Even some auctions seemed to have ended at ridiculously high prices. A couple of them included the US Super System Card, but still.
#14
Good to know. I just want something reliable, finally. Thanks for the quick info.
#15
What are they? Just curious. Any info would be great!

Hmmm... So there's a story here - share it?

EDIT: Never mind. Always helps to read the whole thread.  ](*,)

And for the record, porn and PC Engine isn't a bad angle for an eBay seller. Though, after seeing those photos I suddenly have a fear of popping balloons.

Quote from: bernielindell on 04/20/2011, 03:45 PMAww man...  get a Duo r..  :)
Just wanted to say a big thanks for everyone's input and support. Seriously, I appreciate it.

I hear about the Duo-R or RX from Blue and Bernie - is this really the most dependable of the NEC optical systems? Has anyone had better or worse luck with these or other systems in general?
#19
Quote from: BlueBMW on 04/20/2011, 11:35 AMWe just need to find you a Duo-r or rx and you'll be set!
I know... I'm tempted, but I've always been smitten by the look of the Core II and Super CD ROM together - ever since seeing it in the import ads in the back of EGM in 1991-1992.

Quote from: BEERS AND VIDEOS on 04/20/2011, 09:32 AMIs there a reason why we don't hear about many of these problems on the Sega and Nintendo systems as much?
Apples and oranges.  If you compare only the cartridge systems, the PCE/TG-16 is no less reliable than a Genny/SNES; if you're looking at CD systems, the Sega-CD systems are hardly bulletproof and no less trouble prone.
I'll agree, the optical media is a problem with any system. But the caps - man, the caps... I hear of capacitor problems occasionally in Game Gears, but maybe that's just because people throw them away. Our stuff is definitely rarer.

Thanks Blue, but you've done WAY too much for me already. The GT is running so awesomely - thank you again, you are seriously the bomb....KABOOM! I'll be patient and I'm sure I'll resolve my bad CD ROM karma. After years of drooling, I finally had a Super CD ROM, and it looked so sweet, and even that crapped on me (not literally) the day I got it.
#21
Quote from: esteban on 04/20/2011, 10:05 AMI don't, unfortunately. :(

I had to modify my TG-16 with a Dremel.
I bet that looks tits...
#22
Why is the Turbo and/or PC Engine so notorious for having hardware problems? From leaking caps to CD ROM gears, it seems like you hear more about problems with hardware on this group of systems more than any other. I've had so much bad luck lately with caps (thank you to BlueBMW for fixing!) and two CD ROM drives, it's really been discouraging.  ](*,)

Is there a reason why we don't hear about many of these problems on the Sega and Nintendo systems as much?

Where's the lulz?! I want some!

Is there an archive or "best of" thread on here? Doing a search for Validus comes up with zilch. I want some lulz!
#25
Heck, it's not my idea. I thought that was the whole point of getting the tzd.com domain name. I'm definitely up for working with whoever wants to do something like this and incorporate it into the pushrunbutton.com URL.
#26
I've got a headache.  ](*,)

Is there anyone on here in the forums that's done a PC Engine Component or S-Video out mod?
#27
All great info. Thanks! I may throw some questions your way while I'm shopping around.
#28
So, something more like this? You just hook up the RGB on one end and an HDMI LCD TV on the other?  :-k
#29
Anyone have any experience using an RGB converter in the US? Are there certain brands, features to look out for? Any info would be great!
#30
Sweet - I'm glad everyone digs the URL. Pretty much every game flashes "Push Run Button!" on its title screen, so I thought it would be a unique and relevant domain name.

I'm pretty new here so I don't know the entire backstory, but from what I understand, the idea is to set up a reliable source for people trying to buy PC Engine and Turbo related stuff, as well repairs from guys here on the board? Would there be any content developed for the site as well?
 :-k
#31
I always thought the same thing, but you'd think for high profile titles like Ys III and Ninja Gaiden that those projects wouldn't have been thrown to unskilled programmers.  ](*,)
#32
I registered pushrunbutton.com for a PC Engine / Turbo blog I'm planning. I think it's a pretty cool domain name and would be open to working with everyone and making it more than just a blog. Just throwing it out there.

Quote from: Tatsujin on 04/10/2011, 11:28 AMI've heard the SFC version has no red book audio.
NO WAY!

I just picked it up for about $8 from a US seller, so my investment isn't too steep. I figure even if I don't like it, the music should be worth the $8.

Anyone know how it differs from the Super Famicom version?
#35
I've heard mixed reviews about it, but generally they are favorable. Definitely Sweet Home (for the Famicom) inspired. I'm thinking it could be pretty awesome with the CD audio.
#36
It looks really interesting. Wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with it.
#37
Hmmm... So you can hook up your Sega Genesis / Mega Drive controller?
#38
Were the CD-ROM and IFU sold separately in boxes? I've never seen that.
#39
Are you talking about just the white CD-ROM2 unit, no IFU or PC Engine? $80 plush shipping. Seems a little high to me.

Quote from: neoxeno on 03/27/2011, 04:28 PMI think that anyone who is looking for MC on a forum or on ebay for a fair price is wasting his time. I wish that I'll be lucky a day and I'll find it in the wild. I know, I know, I'm seeing pink elephants.  :?
Just as much chance of finding a unicorn in the wild, but I have the same hope, someday...    [-o<

I'd offer $150 for the Super CD-ROM if that sounds fair.

Quote from: guest on 04/05/2011, 12:55 PMI recently snagged a boxed PC-FX with a couple common games for $125 shipped.  I don't know exactly what the rest of those goodies would be worth, but no doubt your eBay searching skills can figure it out.
ebay isnt the best resource for getting prices. id rather get opinions from nec hobbyists on this site. just because something sells for 800.00 on ebay doesnt make it worth that from then on. Theres a street fighters arcade board that recently jumped like +600.00 because of 2 ebay listings and now everyone thinks thats the market value. def not.... ill put the pcfx at 125 because thats what you suggest.... Thanks man.
No problem, I understand about eBay pricing, which is why I haven't pulled the trigger and purchased what I listed above. Just figured it might give you something to go off of.
#44
All I know are about eBay prices. I've seen an LT, unboxed sitting there for a while around $500 - so maybe with the box yours would go for about that, since the ones on eBay, unboxed aren't selling at that price. I'm thinking Super CD-ROM, unboxed probably around $150 (a boxed one with a boxed Core II just sold for about $280). TurboExpress NEW just went for $250 earlier today through Buy It Now, so yours I'd guess around $200. That's about all I could think off offhand.
#45
NICE! Not sure what it's worth... But if you're looking to sell any of it, especially the Super CD-ROM2 or the LT, definitely hit me up.
#46
Ah, good to know! Thanks!
#47
Every new PC Engine system I've gotten had a clear blue baggie around it when packaged in its box. Is this the norm for all PC-Engine systems?
#48
Quote from: Tatsujin on 04/04/2011, 08:16 PMThose are common shop prices out of my head, no yahoo or buddy prices.
Any one want to give me a buddy price? And while you're at it, thrown in a Super CD-ROM2.
#49
Awesome, thank you!

So what's the deal with the Special Versions PC Engine games? Anyone have any footage of these games?
