Beautiful.

That was a ton of fun! I hope it becomes a thing.

It sounds like what you have is similar to my main player, a CLD-D505. It's nothing fancy, but looks pretty good and plays both sides, which is convenient. I run it through a DVD recorder to a 30" HD CRT and I'm happy with the results. I picked up one of these calibration DVDs ages ago and it has really helped: www.amazon.com/Sound-Vision-Home-Theater-Tune-Up/dp/B00005TRZA

Earlier this year I found an AC-3 demodulator for $50 and added a surround sound system and I think I'm done messing with the LD home theater until I win the lottery. :)

It's kinda funny - the living room has a bigger HD TV, much nicer receiver and speakers, lots of HD sources to enjoy media on, but 90% of my movie watching is from laserdiscs in this dinky little theater and I couldn't be happier.

Yeah, N64 emulation isn't very good. Still it's good enough for me to get my Zelda:OoT fix in from time to time! The most recent RetroPie update seemed to make N64 games play a little smoother, but Zelda is almost perfect now. My Pi3 is also overclocked a bit, so that might help too.

Since I've gotten my Pi3 all set up I've definitely slimmed down my physical collection. Many of the games, though, I've had for decades and it's hard to let them go. There's just something about holding the game in your hands, especially if you have fond memories of purchasing it and playing it for the first time bitd.

From what I've seen, Dreamcast games are for the most part playable, but few run at 100% speed. I need to create a config file for my controller because I can't get out of the date/time screen, and it's pretty low on my priority list because I have a Dreamcast that works just fine.

I haven't noticed any issues with PS1 games on the Pi3, but have only played a handful of games. Castlevania:SotN seems to work fine and I've put a few hours into it. Other than that, I've stuck mainly to RPGs and they all work fine too. Hooray for savestates!

Quote from: Gypsy on 06/11/2017, 08:38 PMYeah pretty much. 3 is the best imo. First one is definitely still worth playing though. You have to get past the standard you have amnesia start to the game because it gets good in a hurry. Though I am biased towards these kind of games and also really enjoyed the Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls series. The Witcher is a bit different than those, however.

If you only have the original version the EE is $1.49 on GOG right now.

Genji is a fun one for sure, I beat it awhile ago.
I'm a big fan of the Elder Scrolls games too. And the Dragon Age games, to a lesser extent. Pretty tempted to pick up EE for only $1.50. I only have the original release.

Quote from: Gypsy on 06/11/2017, 05:54 PMReplaying The Witcher. Fucking masterpiece.
I need to give it another go. I've never gotten very far into it. I hear all the Witcher games are really good.

My son and I spent all weekend playing Starbound together. Really fun game that takes the Terraria game style to the next level.

And Genji Tsūshin Agedama on the PC Engine. Every time I play I get a little farther. The way the difficulty ramps up feels just right on this one.

I kinda hope that all these newer consoles that can emulate roms of old games (Polymega, Game Freak, Retron 5) will finally let people play the games they grew up with and not need to spend a fortune and bring the price down, but then I remember folks like PCE Works and I'm not so sure...

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 06/07/2017, 08:08 PMWhere do you put the CD BIOS?

Also, how do you get it to fuck right the fuck off with 16:9?
By default, it plays in 4:3. You have to mess with it to make it 16:9.

You're right, for CD games you do need to add bios so it's not simply plug and play. There's an exhaustive wiki that clearly defines where bios go for each console: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Playstation-1
#115
Quote from: SignOfZeta on 06/07/2017, 04:32 PMHow about CDs?
You put the bin/cue or iso files in the folders it creates on the flash drive, just like the roms.

If you're a "meganerd" you can also ftp into the Pi and transfer them that way.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I think the Polymega is a very slick-looking console and it's interface is gorgeous. I'm definitely going to want to play around with it when Null gets his. :) But there isn't word yet on pricing, and I imagine it won't be cheap. I'm just trying to point out that there's already something out there that's super cheap, easy to set up, and does almost everything this thing does. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Polymega is using Retroarch for its emulation on the backend.

Setting up a RetroPie is dead simple, though.

1. Go to the RetroPie website and download the image.
2. Put the image on an SD card.
3. Plug SD card into Raspberry Pi and turn Pi on.

You're done. All the most common emulators are already configured and run intuitively with whatever controller you have plugged in.

Adding roms is just as simple.

1. While RetroPie is running plug a USB flash drive into the Pi. It'll automatically create a folder structure on the drive.
2. Plug the flash drive into your computer and copy your roms to it. Put the Turbografx-16 roms in the folder labeled "Turbografx-16" etc.
3. Plug the flash drive back into the Pi and it'll automatically add all the games to the Pi.

That's it. In probably less than an hour you have it ready to go.

There's all sorts of other stuff you can tinker with if you want, but it doesn't take a "meganerd" to get up and running.

Quote from: Gredler on 06/07/2017, 02:27 PMwwwwhat?  I need to research this. How difficult is it, and how well does it work? I think every Raspberry Pi I've encountered has been crippled or setup incorrectly, because I did not see anything like this and the visual quality of the emulation was a mess. Links would be appreciated, thanks!
Here's the wiki page on it.
https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Netplay

I haven't played around with it, but it doesn't look very complicated. Reminds me of getting games online back in the early Windows days. :)

I don't know how long ago you checked out RetroPie, or what type of Raspberry Pi you were using, but on a Pi3 all the emulators I've tried run flawlessly (minus N64 - some games play fine, some don't). PS1 games run fine on it.

It can even run Dreamcast games, though I haven't installed that emulator yet:

Quote from: Gredler on 06/07/2017, 01:15 PMStill waiting to hear about online multiplayer though, if they have a way to incorporate that I will be a vehement supporter.
Psst. That can also be done with a Raspberry Pi. :P
#119
Quote from: guest on 06/07/2017, 11:49 AMYou don't have to care about features that don't interest you, but it's patently false to say a $35 pi has the exact same capabilities.
You're right. A Raspberry Pi 3 is far more capable than a Polymega. :D
#120
Quote from: guest on 06/07/2017, 10:14 AMYou can say that $35 pi is the same thing as soon as it comes with a case, cartridge slot, cd-rom drive, controller, and works right out of the box without you having to fuck around with it.
Ha!
It does pretty much work right out of the box without having to tinker with it: https://retropie.org.uk/
Chances are good you already have a controller that'll work with it and the cartridge slot/cd drive is essentially meaningless since they're both doing emulation anyway.

I think it's genius that they offered an auction the way they did. The Old Rover and Arkan could use that as a way to recoup some of their costs on whatever they are currently developing. Granted, most of us might not be that baller, but for a small run, they made a ton of money! And all from their biggest fans.
#123
Yeah, I really don't get the allure to this. It looks like it's going to be relatively pricy, and I think my $35 Raspberry Pi can do everything it can. Granted, it's got a pretty sweet interface, but I've gotten used to what the Pi has, and can change it if I'm so inclined.

I tend to stick with a single game per console for awhile as well. For instance, I picked up Genji Tsushin Agedama a few weeks ago and I've been playing that almost exclusively.
#126
Woo! Thanks for the update!

I recently swapped out my 20" Sony WEGA for a 27" Toshiba. The Sony is great for lugging around, and has a fantastic picture, but the Toshiba looks just as good, imo, and has more inputs. And it still has that slick 16:9 mode for widescreen games and DVDs!

And to throw some more Sennheiser love out there, I have a pair of HD 380s at work and love them.

Quote from: esteban on 06/04/2017, 09:19 AMHelp me—is this Kansas City in Kansas or in Missouri?

TANGENT: My brother is moving to Springfield, Missouri in a few weeks, and my uncle lives in Kansas City (I can't remember which one, but I think it's Missouri).

This means that, theoretically, in the future, I might actually stop in the state instead of just driving through it.

BACK ON TOPIC: I am jealous and envious of anyone going to this TurboFest.
Yeah, What Gypsy said. Part of Kansas City in in Kansas and part of it is in Missouri. Springfield is only about 4 hours from Kansas City. We drive down there a lot. They have a cool arcade called 1984 that I've been wanting to check out.

I can hook you up with some of those at KC TurboFest. I have TMNT 1, Mega Man 2, and Star Tropics.

I'm still playing Starpoint Gemini 2 a ton on Steam, though I think it's starting to wane. After nearly 50 hours of gameplay I think I've gotten my money's worth (it cost about $5 on a Steam sale). Tons of fun if you can get over some glaring flaws.
#137
This is one of the reasons I bought a Raspberry Pi. I'm not going to buy a Sega CD and Snatcher, but for $35 I can get the same experience. Sadly, I haven't played it as much as I'd like, but, holy moly, all the Blade Runner references makes me want to play it more!

P.S. - I purchased the PC Engine version before getting s RPi hoping I could find a good walkthrough, but so much is lost that way that I just couldn't enjoy it.
#138
I'll have to give Season 4 another go. I didn't get very far into it the first time, and I *loved* Seasons 1-3. Not sure I'm sold on a Season 5 right now.

In about a month I'll be hosting a small TurboFest at my place all weekend long.

Starting Friday evening and running until Sunday afternoon ( 6/30-7/2), we'll be playing Turbografx-16, PC Engine, and maybe some other stuff all day and until we drop. I've sent the wife and kiddo on vacation. All who wish to obey are welcome to come by! I live just outside of Kansas City, in Lee's Summit. PM me if you're interested in joining in the festivities.

A handful of Obeyers have already signed on, but the more the merrier. You're all welcome to crash at my place, though I don't have much space to sleep, so think about bringing a sleeping bag or air mattress.

I've made up special pins to give to all who attend. So if you come by, you'll be super elite!
#140
WOOOOOO! Thanks!

On the PC I generally stick to Ootake.

But I built a little Raspberry Pi3 RetroPie thingy and that uses RetroArch, I think. It's pretty slick!

Awesome! Here in Kansas City we've got Tapcade (http://www.tapcadekc.com/), Up Down KC (http://www.updownkc.com/) and Pawn and Pint (https://www.facebook.com/pawnsandpints/) a board-game/bar joint, and they're all within walking distance of each other! Sadly, I've never been to any of them because I know if I go to one I'll want to go to all three and won't be able to drive myself home. :)

Quote from: crazydean on 04/27/2017, 06:11 AMI don't think Bonk is a good game. Many of you love this game, so I hope to find out why!
Bonk's Adventure has been one of my favorite games since the console came out in the States, so my view is probably biased and nostalgia weighs pretty heavy for me. Having said that, my view echos many of the same sentiments already voiced here.
I love that there's a simple story.
I love the quirky, colorful, bizarre characters.
I love that it's an upside-down take on the traditional platformer, where Bonk juggles enemies in the air rather than jumps on them (though he can do that too, as long as it's head-first).
I love that the turbo switches are perfect for this game, both of them!
I love all of the hidden areas. I've been playing this game almost since day 1 and I still found a new area last year.
I love the soundtrack.

I played through the game again last night while streaming on Twitch and uncovered many (though not all) of the secret areas. I also didn't juggle nearly as much as I could have, though I still finished the game with 17 extra lives.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/139366332

This game is definitely one of my favorites and whenever I have some time to kill and just want to sit down and play something I love, this is a top contender.

It took me months or years of practice to beat the game and I remember the first time I completed it; it took me 4.5 hours. Now I usually beat it in about 1 hour. It's so much fun.

Here's a good spot where it's super easy to max out your score. All it takes is time. :D
IMG

I'm bumping this thread because I was wondering if we'd started a speed run score since it's been proven that max score can be accomplished. I finished the game in about an hour and 5 minutes tonight while streaming on twitch, but I'm sure it can be finished faster: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/139275918

I'm going by when I start playing and when I defeat King Drool. :D
