10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Off-Topic / NBA playoffs
04/26/2018, 08:48 AM
Anyone following the playoffs?  There's been some outstanding basketball being played.  Any one series so far has had some incredible moments (caveat:  Spurs/Warriors).  I legit think that the 76ers could very well win the east, and the west is looking a lot closer than I'd have thought, but definitely I have the Rockets and Warriors for the finals.

I'm gonna watch every game from here on in.

Ok, so I dug the old cdrom2s out,  and this is with headphones in and a CD, the unit lights up, but doesn't spin, and I'm 90% sure this because old me went through tweaking the pots in frustration.  Like all 5 probably.  Has anyone got a picture of the pots on a working one, or any baseline readings?

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTT Gate of Thunder
04/25/2018, 05:49 AM
I have a spare Gate of Thunder to trade, ideally for Nexzr or Spriggan Mk II  Mine is complete with manual but missing the spine, and the CD spindle inside the case is a little sunken on one side, but that's easily replaced/fixed

I'm watching GametechUS on youtube (on a Friday night, go me) and he snips the caps with short nosed snippers, and it actually seems to do a decent job.  What's the consensus of this technique?  Any downsides?

PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Wallaby!!
04/13/2018, 11:40 AM
What were they thinking?  A game where you race rocket powered wallabies could have given the system the edge it needed to beat out the Super NES and Genesis in north America, but they made the game a gambling simulator.

One day, maybe someone will hack the sprites into Motoroader so it can finally be the game we all knew it could be.

I thought I should probably snap some up just in case, but I see some greedy bitch is selling them of eBay for $30 each.  Is there a more reasonable source?

Obvs it might not be the right gear, but I see people are selling replacement cd gears on ali baba

can someone give me a quick heads up on how to measure the frequency of VR105 on a white CD unit?

Looking at this https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=8926.msg396086#msg396086 guide, it says "Connect the counter lead (typically the red lead in a red/black pair) to Pin 1 of Connecter P6
Connect the ground lead (black) to Pin 5 of Connector P5"

But I can't see any markings for P6 or P5 on the board.  Where am I supposed to connect the probes?  I would have thought it was just on the pins of the potentiometer itself.

I also can't find many things with 5+ pins

I've been filling in a few gaps in my collection recently, and everything I can find about pricey games is pretty old, though obviously there are a lot of constants.  I understand there was some kind of price increase in 2014?  Anyway, I'll make a quick list to satisfy my curiosity and help snagging any bargains.  I'll generally try and list stuff that sells for over £100.

I just watched two videos to compare, and while I always thought the PC Engine version compared unfavorably to the Arcade, it's not actually so bad.  There's some awful sprite flicker, sure, and the sprites are smaller, but I can't see any other system other than the Neo Geo doing much better.

Does anyone know if it could be improved upon?
#17
I'm considering recapping my 2 GTs myself.  My soldering has improved markedly, but I'm still a bit scared.  Anyway, two questions:

I just watched a video, and the way the guy explained it, it made it seem like the capacitors are kind of surface mounted instead of through-hole.  If that's the case, that would make it a lot more fiddly, is this correct? Or can I desolder them from the bottom?

If I recapped it, I'd ideally want to replace the caps like for like, with the same low profile type.  What are these called, and is there a downside to using these?

*edit* I opened them up and answered my own questions.  Surface mount, and aluminium caps.  I don't know what the pros and cons are of aluminium caps, but suffice it to say, I don't feel comfortable enough in my skills to recap these.

So let's change the question - does anyone know a decent source in the UK that recaps GTs?  I'd ideally like to see some examples of work, or have someone vouch for them before I sent them off.  I don't want a crappy job done on these
#18
So the fucker has done it again and bootlegged another classic game.  Are there any marks on the box or disc to signify that it's a bootleg?  People on ebay are trying to sell the bootlegs for the same price as the original.

Looking for one of these two games - if you have them and want to sell, drop me a PM :)

Buy/Sell/Trade / Hueys for trade
01/12/2018, 05:32 AM
I'd prefer trade, otherwise I'll just spend the money on groceries or whatever.  I have the following:

Afterburner II (loose)
Streetfighter II (loose)
The Kung Fu (loose)
Alien Crush (loose)
Legendary Axe (CIB)

All tested and working, shipped from the UK.  The only wants I can think of are Spriggan and Championship Rally, but I'll entertain offers.

Someone is selling a bootleg Rondo for roughly 5 times the price of the original.  I hope he chokes on his cereal.

I finally did it.  I rationalised it by thinking it's not ever going to get any cheaper, and I have the money right now, but I just spent close to £200 on a video game.  That's pretty fucking crazy.  I mean technically, it is an asset.  If I was suddenly in need of that kind of money, I could just resell it.  It's not like I'm buying a wardrobe or something.

I think I got a fairly good deal as well, a loose card sold for £100 that I was willing to drop £70 on, a complete copy went for £310, and my copy has the case and manual but no cardboard sleeve.  So I don't know if I paid £100 for a case and manual, or saved £100 on a cardboard sleeve.  Either way, that's the final Supergrafx game I needed, and one of the last remaining PC Engine titles I was after.  I think there's ~5 more that I had an eye on but obviously they cost a lot less.

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTB: Shuttle Manual
06/08/2017, 08:21 AM
Still looking for a PC Engine Shuttle manual if anyone has one.
#24
I can't be sure, but I think I remember some systems having a little sticker on the back of the manual with the serial number of the console on it.  Is this the case?  And specifically, is it the case with the shuttle?
#26
I'd like to eventually get my hands on one, the last SGX game I need.  What's the average price these days?
#27
Most of you already know that, but I've never played it before today.  I didn't play it much either (or tried not to), I just wanted to make sure it worked.

I recently got Super Castlevania IV, and I thought that was pretty good.  A lot of people like it and I can see why.  But X is better in every concievable area by some distance.  I've heard it said that Super has the best music on the SNES, but damn.  I would actually listen to the soundtrack to X aside from the game.  It's incredible.

The cut scenes, the voice acting, the prologue section, and the tight controls, huge sprites...  This is working out in my eyes to be one of the greatest games of the era.  This is a masterpiece.

Possibly the best game on the Engine?
#28
Just discussing starting a new project with my housemate, and I figured since he needs to learn C# for his new job, we could collaborate on a making game together in C#, probably using Unity as a framework.

Now, I've had a game in mind for years that's super, super easy, and it just struck me that we could knock it out Unity in maybe a week or so.  But since it was originally planned for me to get my feet wet with HuC, it was intended for the PC Engine.

I know I can't simply port the code over, it won't work that way, but before I start, is there anything I can do to make my life easier if I decide to rewrite it in HuC at some point?  I've never used either at this point, and I've barely ever touched C.  I'm guessing it's just going to be a case of "you need to rewrite it completely, but at least you'll have an idea of what needs to go where", and I'm ok with that.  I can probably reuse graphics if I go about it the right way.
#29
So just wondering if any of the pins on the external bus pass through the 7805 on their way in/out.  I plan on connecting a 12v battery to the power in, and then hopefully getting 5v out to power a cheapo MP3 speaker that usually run on 2 AAs.  I'd guess 5v is probably in range, where 12v could fry the amp.  I'll power the LCD screen from the bus too.
#30
Ok, so this serves me right for messing around, but I'm really worried because I think I've just fucked up a really nice Core Grafx.

I had a tenokoe bank, and I've sawed off the connector to the back of the PC bus.

I was testing it on a PCE, trying to see if a battery pack would power it by soldering on a portable speaker.  Assuming I had it the right way around, I'd soldered a1 and c1, a11 c20 and c21.

What could I have done?  I'm guessing the sound channels are nothing to do with anything, so I might have caused a short, or put power into the Vin and out of the Vout?

If anyone has any ideas or thinks it can be recovered, I'd be really grateful :(

*Edit* I think the + on the pcb should have gone to a11 and maybe the - should have gone to c21.  It would be nice to know, but right now I'm more concerned with fixing the console
#31
Hello, long time no see!

I'm thinking about continuing a mod I started years ago, then put away.  I got stuck at the battery stage after buying 2 li-ion batteries I was going to wire together.  From what I know now, this is a terrible idea, because I don't have the expertise to limit the charge properly in any way.

So basically, the next step is to get a new battery that will be able to supply the screen and the PC engine.  I know that I can wire the screen to take the power directly from the console, and the screen is only 5v.  What can I get away with for the PC engine?  I know it says 9v, but in practice I remember it was less.

I've found this 12v battery which I should be able to uncase, and it would also solve the problem of charging:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Professional-4000mA-Polymer-Lithium-Ion-Battery-12V-Plastic-Shell-And-Charger-F7-/222304228894?var=&hash=item33c25d561e:m:mRP4EW7A60z95keQbeqfLjg

But I also have a 5v battery already with USB in/out ports.  If I can use that, and if I can figure out how to rewire the out part, that would be ideal

Hey all, does there exist a USB converter to plug a PCE gamepad into a PC, and does it work with Magic Engine, and does it support the multitap?

I've googled and searched, but I can't find anything.  Has to be PCE since I don't own any Turbo accessories

PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / 1941
12/26/2015, 02:50 PM
Happy xmas y'all.  Just a quick question, I looked up 1941 on ebay, and the prices are way high - is this representative of the general trend for 1941, or is this just a temporary spike?  I'd have expected £150 for a complete game max, but it's twice that.

Off-Topic / Oddly specific music request
12/13/2013, 10:35 AM
Hey BUDDIES

Firstly, Happy Christmas.

Secondly, I'd like to ask y'all for some music.  I like to stick youtube on while I work out and I quite like listening to video game music.  I specifically like arranges, because they're longer (and the Xbox Youtube auto recommendation system is ridiculous, switch me from chiptunes to classical in 3 videos)

Can anyone recommend me a channel, or specific videos that are evocative of things like Street Fighter II (specifically Guile and Kens stage), F-Zero X/GX (can't remember the track) and I quite enjoyed Gradius V's music.  So something with that kind of uplifting aggressive guitar.

My preference would be in this order:
Channels
Series
Videos
Games with similar music

Thankyou all for your time.

Off-Topic / Scooby got doxxed
09/05/2013, 11:31 AM
Just an FYI for anyone that didn't know, but Scooby got doxxed by some ass on 4chan a couple months back.  I know there are a few gnomes on here, but it may have slipped through the cracks.

As a result of harassment (death threats, sexual slurs, people turning up at his house), he decided to disable Youtube comments on his videos, shut down the askscooby forum, and actually relocate (he built his house with his own hands) to protect his family.

The saddest thing for those who don't know, is this is one of the nicest, most genuine people, who has spent thousands of hours helping people reach their own goals, for no profit, and often indeed out of his own pocket.

so yeah, fuck that.  I guess it's like someone on here doxxing Beamer.

My friends kid broke her TV.  She posted on Facebook, and the first response was "yup, no fixing that lol" from some dumbass who's probably never touched a soldering iron in his life.

From what little I know, the vertical and horizontal drivers have been damaged/disconnected in some way.  Before she shells out £100's on a new TV, what are the chances of a fix?

Just thinking here about iPads.  Does anyone know if it's possible to run MAME on them?  I think those iCade (mini cab) things are cute, but I wonder what level of emulation you'd be able to get on an iPad.

I'm completely familiar with Apple products.  Never had iTunes, a mac, an iPhone or an iPad, but I beelieve emulation may be something the app store frowns upon? And can you get around this by jailbreaking?

I'm gonna have a look now to see how much 1st gen iPads are.

General Gaming / Cheap games for a expo
07/09/2013, 10:19 AM
Oh hai there.  My friend is running an expo of sorts, a retro game tent as part of a festival, so the kids can go in and experience some back in the day goodness.  A bunch of you have experience with this kind of thing, so I thought I'd ask y'all for your advice on what games would be the most fun.  I guess the criteria are:

Easy to pick up and play (i.e. no complicated controls/back story)
Arcade style play (as fun a Ocarina of time is, I'm guessing there will be queues and 5-10 minute play times)
Multiplayer good, depending on controller availability - she's buying a lot of these herself, and 4 controllers for each system plus taps might be OTT
Cheap - so super common games, that are still grade A.  I'm not up to scratch on the pricing of some of these.
It would also be nice if they showed off something quirky about the system, something of a draw that you can't get from CoD and Fifa 483478

Here are the consoles she has so far:
Game cube
Nintendo 64
XBOX
PS2
SEGA Master System

But I guess she could possibly obtain others in the interim, so if you've got a particularly good idea, go for it.  I might also lend her a Core Grafx, Bomberman and a tap with 5 pads.

The best idea I've had so far is Monkeyball for the Gamecube, though Luigi's mansion is a good shout.  And maybe Pilotwings 64 or blast corps?
#39
How do you send it?  Is there a specific category you can send it under so they know it's coming back?

On the one hand, you don't really want to send something like an LT abroad, declare it's full value, and potentially get stung once each way for customs.
On the other, if it goes missing thanks to the USPO, you want to be insured.

I was just thinking that if I had an LT, I wouldn't want to trust it to anyone that wasn't on these forums, but everyone that I'd hand it over to is in NA.

Ok you guys, since I just won a raffle (thanks Turboswimbz!), I'm gonna pay it forward and raffle off my loose BeBall.

General rules apply, don't be a dick etc, I'll decide who's in and who's out on the last day, and I guess I'll draw it on... the 21st?  Ish?

Who's in?

Sorry for the Facebook update, but I can't put this on Facebook anyway...

Just sent a girl flowers.  No idea if this was good idea yet, but I got them sent to her work, some Lillies...
So she's either gonna think I'm a massive dork, or whatever.

I met her about 2 weeks ago, and didn't get her number because her phone was broken, but I was expecting to bump into her and didn't.  So yeah, I decided this would be the least weird method of contact.

I also insulted her taste in music in the note.

And now we wait.

Fighting Street / EvilEvoIX
06/03/2013, 10:31 AM
This thread is about how wrong EvilEvoIX is. Even when he's right, it's completely irrelevant, because it's out of context.  When he's a customer, he's always wrong.  If someone points out his flies are undone, he'll pointedly argue that they're not and back this up with the fact that button flies can move more sprites than zip flies, and he would know because his dad is a master of the arcane arts of haberdashery.  All this with his weiner swinging in the breeze.

And that's the takeaway here.  Even if you're convinced 100% that you're right (you're not, see above), your dick is hanging out, and you look silly.

Thought I'd ask again.  Need all the bits of paper for my boxed shuttle.

Off-Topic / What forms your identity?
05/29/2013, 11:35 AM
Going in part on the thread "people will by fucking anything", how much of your identity is formed by what you own, what you do, or your relationships?

http://www.academia.edu/2428249/Consumerism_and_Identity_Some_Psychoanalytic_Considerations

I would consider, personally, to be defined partly by my interests.  I don't really care for labels, but I, and I imagine a fair few others on this forum would be considered nerds, or perhaps geeks.  Even when that aspect of personality would be overshadowed by traits normally diametrically opposed.  For all the computer games and comics, I do tend towards that aspect of exhaustive research towards topics I enjoy, but on the other I'm quite sociable.

The other thing that tends to define my personality is probably popular culture I identify with.  Not so much music, but perhaps Internet sub-culture and some TV shows, things like that.

So I kind of reject the fact that so many identify themselves with what they consume.  In fact (and I guess it's hard to be objective about this sort of thing from a personal perspective), I'd guess that many here would feel the same as me.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Off-Topic / Interference
05/17/2013, 12:32 PM
My friend appeared out of the blue the other day (haven't seen him for a few months), and among the news was that he's starting.. I guess it's a business.  He's a carpenter, and he's gotten around to having a website made, business cards, even a fucking hoodie.

The thing is, as good as he is at carpentry, he's a total luddite, and he's got no sense of style.  His website is a fucking trainwreck.  It's got no metatags, it doesn't even have a title, and the main logo is some free clipart.  Whoever designed it (and I seriously doubt it was him) hasn't got clue 1.  And the domain name is 10 sylables and about 30 characters long.

So I sat down yesterday and started making him a brand new site from scratch, just using good old HTML and CSS.  It's got a decent logo, a concurrent theme, and a some neat effects.

But now I've made it, I'm having second thoughts.  I mean this is his deal, right?  Who am I to come barging in changing all his shit thinking I know better?  Like I said he's already got stuff printed, so he's invested money in this already.  Maybe it's a bit of a slap in the face.

You don't know him, but help me decide.  Do I offer him a website and some decent branding, or do I let him carry on the best he can?
