10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 02/07/2018, 03:57 PMAnyone doing that could be in serious trouble. These are ads that cost millions and millions of dollars to make. It's not standard practice to just steal shit from whatever you can get it. You get sued that way. It happens, sure, but it's not correct professional behavior. "Don't rip off union musicians to save $1800." is sort of a rule.
I'm fully aware my wild theory implies someone risking lawsuit, etc...the premise is that the game is so obscure, someone somewhere, thought they could get away with ripping it off, therefore the tune making it into this pool of  music.  In this scenario, this big million dollar commercial wouldn't have a clue about ripping off anything, they are just hiring out some music for their commercial.

While, I agree it's more likely Shapeshifter borrowed the tune or even helped themselves to it, it would be fun to find out if in fact Shapeshifter WAS the original source - in that vein, i'm sticking with my wild tale of ad musician conspiracy.
#2
My wild guess: Whoever put together this tune for use in ads, youtube, etc, ripped it off from shapeshifter, knowing full well whoever wrote the tune for the game probably wants to forget that portion of his life working on one of the final handful of games of a failing system, therefore will never bother to take action against anyone using it. In fact, he might be happy more than 1000 people are actually hearing the music if he ever finds out. So the rip off artist knows this, liked the tune and used it for his generic ad music.

Again, wild guess......

Quote from: OldTurboBastard on 01/28/2018, 09:25 PMJust got a new copy of MotoRoader MC (i guess it's part 3?) in the mail...it's no longer new. Was initially disappointed to see the scrolling tracks are gone, more like a super sprint type game now...but 20 minutes or so of play revealed it was actually still pretty fun....could see multiplayer battles still being fun, but i didn't see any upgrades yet? That was one of the best parts of the first game was getting that new engine or body, and smoking your buddies, dragging their sorry asses from the back of the screen every 2 seconds!!!
Yeah, so this has been an ongoing source of confusion... we can't figure out how to activate stuff (is it double-tapping  in the direction you are traveling)?

I haven't played MotoRoaderMC in a few years, but I was making progress just playing it as a simple game...but some tracks just seemed incredibly tough (you couldn't make even a small error...)

So, I can't help but feel that I only know "half" the game.
Yeah the weapon usage is weird, but what seems to work every time for me in a couple of sit downs with it is to let off the accelerator briefly (like split second) and then tap it twice. Fires a shot every time. But that's just firing...believe I saw where I was somehow changing weapons mid race.

In short, yeah it's confusing!

OP has nothing at all to be ashamed of. The market is the market. I'm not telling anyone anything they don't already know by saying the supply is low for these late run games and there are people out there that want them.....which means the price goes up to these ridiculous amounts. Mind you no way in hell i'd ever pay these amounts but low supply + demand = $$$$. Why should games be any different?

Do coin collectors get this much flack for not spending their mint rare 1943 pennies at face value?

Welcome Legendary Rob. I've recently picked up a PC Engine Duo myself, i had the TG16 back in the day but it was sold around college years. Started getting back interested in the console again (Happy Console Gamer and BitHead1000 videos didn't hurt).

I may be preaching to the choir, but if you have not played Ys 1 & 2 yet, i'd make that a target - you'll need a way to play CD's of course.

One still cheap HuCard out there is Final Lap Twin - the only reason i recommend it is due to the RPG - I haven't played it in decades but back in the day i had a lot of fun with it....or maybe i was just excited an otherwise mediocre racing game turned out to actually provide some decent hours of gaming...would have to revisit but again fond memories.

First off, I hope you will forgive my shameless plug, having not been too active here in last few years, but if anyone will appreciate this, they will be among us here!

Secondly, credit to Nightwolve and Burnt Lasagna for providing the awesome English patch!! Link below for due credit.
https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=13136.0

So,now why i'm posting.... I have recently gotten back on a turbografx kick and started rebuilding a TG16/PCE collection...to cut a long story short, I recently played through Ys IV and made an EDITED playthrough, cutting out all the long travels and grinding, it is purely events in the game, cutscenes, bosses, item finds, useful town conversations. It's best summed up by "No wandering (hey, it's not Ys III) and no grinding"...and thanks to the awesome patch from those credited above, it is in English.

I hope you will enjoy, all 4 episodes now complete.  Next project will be book 1 and 2! Can't start doing Ys videos without including the granddaddy.

Just want to say this game has a FANTASTIC ending..SPOILERS of course if you are going to watch, but for the era you could not ask for a better ending, heck any era!

Believe it or not, I actually had friends who bought a turbografx after I got mine...and both got the CDROM too, so thats where i played it first. I ended up trading a 5 cd changer for my friends entire turbo setup after i had sold mine. Then i sold all that for like $200 in 1997 or so. Ugh. But by that time out was collecting dust unless me and 4 other stoned friends wanted to play "motoroader"....We LOVED that game during my college years!

Favorite: cutscene before book 2 where adol gets beamed up to Ys. Probably favorite all time game music.

Another favorite, the boss hard rocking music for the average bosses.

Worst? I'd have to replay to give a good answer...

Deep Blue was one of those that always looked really cool to me in the magazine shots, but i never got to play it...then when I was able to play it years later, I was not a fan ... but not like i played through the whole game so shouldn't judge too harshly.
#14
I'll go "Favorite games when owned the system" rather than roms i've discovered years later that i knew nothing about as a TG16 owner

1. Ys 1 and 2 - most fun i've had playing an RPG
2. JB Harold Murder Club - it was just really well done and fun
3. Blazing Lazers - such killer music
4. Moto Roader - 5 player action, which friends and I did alot of, was a blast. The upgrading was great.
5. Final Lap Twin - a racing RPG - awesome!

Quote from: Gentlegamer on 02/25/2015, 04:36 PMI've never seriously tried to play Ys, but I can't imagine I will like the "bump into things" combat.
Sorry to respond so late to your post, but if you are still around, as a classic gamer Y's vI and II is a must play. Fondest memories of my video gaming youth come from this game - it's just amazing.
#16
Just to give some idea, I had 2 friends, plus myself, in the early 90's that had the CD attachment (pre-duo) in the virginia beach area.
#17
Keith Courage - When I bought my TG-16 i could'nt afford another game so this was my first impression of the 200 bucks I just spent..  It was way below expectations (although I would never admit it back then). Sure the under world looked good but the shameless repetition was a let down.

Once I saved up and got R-Type all was well again.....

Make the PCE/Supergrafx forum just "Supergrafx" and the Turbo forum "Turbo/PCE"

That would make the most sense to me...

I'd have to go with Psychosis, followed by Ninja Spirit in a close second

Quote from: guest on 08/04/2007, 11:19 AMDevil's Crush/Crash: The PCE version has a pentagram that was changed into something generics in the Turbo version.
I thought that was just on the Virtual Console. I remember pentagrams on the turbo, might just be wishful thinking though.

Agreed- I was blown away when I played Saphire - "How'd they do that?" kept running through my head. For pure visual candy, I've seen nothing on the PC engine that comes close. Now bring on the "But have you seen X game??" posts...

For me, yes. Without getting into too much detail, i could easily spend $1000 in a night on "that other stuff". Plus with games, you tend to at least think before you spend. But I understand what you are saying the games can get expensive too.....

At least the turbo games don't have you peering out a window all night long and mortgaging your home. That sounds like the "good" sort of addiction

Quote from: ccovell on 01/22/2008, 09:24 AMI just checked a couple of screenshots from Golden Axe arcade, and the player characters' sizes range around 32x50 to 50x60...  which quite literally is only 2 sprites on the Turbo!   :)
well in that case, maybe they WERE just lazy, hell i don't know.

lazy bastards were probably browsing gaming fan sites when they should have been working hard on the job  :-"
#34
Quote from: nat on 01/22/2008, 01:25 AMYou're nuts. I remember this shit from the Genesis vs. Turbo thread a few months back. You have some whacky preconceptions about the Turbo hardware.

Golden Axe barely has any sprites on screen at all at any given time. Not even close to the limit. The Turbo is fully competent to handle a few sprites in a two-player version of Golden Axe with plenty to spare. One more wouldn't make an ounce of difference. If you think this is due to some inherent hardware limitation, you're living in la-la land.

I think the "laziness" in the case of the Turbo version is just that-- pure laziness. When you see how lazy they were with the in-game graphics, it's no small wonder.

It's a much bigger mystery why the SEGA CD version of the game lacks the two-player mode, considering a 2 player version of the game had already been created for the system. Laziness was obviously not the issue-- it would take far more work to remove the 2 player functionality than to just leave it in.
OK - so what are those whacky preconcieved notions? not sure I said anything inaccurate. As for the number of sprites-  I may be wrong here but I believe a complex character model will take more than just a few sprites - it's not just two sprites for two characters.
#35
Quote from: guest on 01/21/2008, 10:10 PMIt couldn't handle them loading them from CD where it could loading them from cartridge? Nope, that ain't it. Try again. I think it was just laziness on the part of the programmers, either that or limitations in how much game data they could store in system RAM at any given time.
Actually, What I'm refering to is the maximum of 64 on-screen sprites that the turbo GPU can handle simultaneously. I don't think the transfer of data from media to RAM has much to do with it - the GPU could'nt handle the sprites regardless of whether the data for them could be stored in RAM.  The turbo could handle larger sprites, but not as many as the genesis (which I believe could handle 80 smaller sprites).  Hence the two player mode on the Genesis port. Could it be that the hardware just could'nt handle it on our beloved turbo??? GASP!!!

Programmers get "lazy" when hardware limitations make things difficult to pull off..... If i have to come up with some ingenious algorithm every time I want to get around the hardware limits i am gonna be less likely to do it. Having said that i've seen the golden axe port and i'm sure a better job could have been done on the PC engine port. Two Players??? I'm sure it could have been done by sacrificing other in game sprites or using some other compromising method.
#36
Quote from: Kitsunexus on 01/19/2008, 12:43 AMMultiplayer was removed because due to system limitations at the time, the system could only hold one player. The second player would have to stream directly from disc, and considering 90's console CD access times, it would be unplayable and thus was scrapped.

This of course is 100% bullshit but sounds more logical than anything anyone else has put out so far.
Its probably as simple as the console could'nt handle the extra sprites.
#37

So while we're at it, why does a PC generally take a few seconds to boot up (even just the basic I/O stuff from BIOS, never mind a bloated OS) while most game systems instantaneously boot up?

I always assumed it had to do with the fact that a game system is made for one purpose and does not have to check 16 different card slots, IDE, ram, etc...

what's going on there?

#45
whether you attribute it to the jump button or not the play control is shitty on the pce engine version - challenging and aggravating are two different things, and the pce version was aggravating to me. Play control can be very underrated as it is one of the big things the turbo had going for it over the genesis. the genesis controller was sluggish, while the controller and the feel of the controls (play control)made the turbo games more fun to play in many cases (just not in this one)- in fact play control is almost right up there with PARALLAX SCROLLING!!!  :-"

Too bad they did'nt take advantage in this port...

I actually enjoyed Jack Nicklaus Golf but the backgrounds (if you can call the "3D" view a background) were plain ugly, and they took ages to render just to really piss you off it seemed. Some ugly shades of green, maroon, and grey. Despite all that the game could be fun with a few friends
