Are there any examples of spine cards that actually look cool, rather than examples of spine cards that should've looked cool?

Spine cards for many games were a way to extend the art all the way to the border of the package on some games.

Personally, I love getting spine cards with games as I think it's a cool little thing to go with the package, but I will not cry into my cheerios if it's missing.  Like NecroPhile said they are easy enough to stick in the manual if you want to go that route. 

Yes, I concur--spine cards that extend the art or "add" to the visual presentation are quite neat.

I also think that "boring" spine cards are totally OK if silly/ugly/marketing crap resides **only** on the spine card **instead** of living permanently on the actual cover/tray insert. 

So... spine cards have a purpose in this universe.

I want all the French boxes.

It's all the earlier released TG16 boxes too i've noticed. I've seen the later released games (TTI) get lazy and just add a french insert, instead of redesigning the manual/box. At least that was the case for darkwing duck.

Or how about a black and white Bonk 3 manual?? Yeah! Apparently this photocopied rental store lookin manual was what Canadians got buying Bonk 3. TTI really saved the best for last with this one

Yes! I am intrigued by that manual...it seems like TTi was providing the minimum required by law (understandable)...but I can't help but feel that folks up North felt slightly less loved...

I'll admit that I had a hard time trying to decide which Fearless Youth made sense to pair with this Dunkel Lager from Grimm Brothers Brewhouse. But Yuko from Valis seemed to fit pretty well and I have plenty of games with her in them!

Ha! That's closer than I thought it was. The promotional/marketing juggernaut of SEGA was incredible at that time...I don't think I talked to anyone about DUO...just Sega CD. I only knew a few people who had TG-16, but I don't think any of those folks upgraded to the CD-ROM lifestyle.

TANGENT: I tried, for months, to buy the System Card 3 upgrade for TG-CD, and I just gave up. Even after DUO launched, I couldn't buy the damn System Card (which had been heavily promoted to TG-16 fans)...

...it still irks me! I should let go, but, dammit, was it because folks were too lazy to take an order over the phone? Should I have sent in my order? These memories still haunt me. As a kid, it was a "big deal" because I had to ask my parents to order with a credit card...and I had saved up the cash ($100+) for months already...

This time I'm mixing it up a bit! Hellfire S on the PC Engine, plus some Brown Ale from Upslope Brewing. And to go with the "brown" theme I also included Hellfire for the Genesis and MegaDrive. LOL

Goddamn. I love the brown theme.

Hellfire was one of those PCE games that cost too much 15 years ago, but I wish I bought it back then.

I can't believe no one has mentioned spine cards. Once the game is opened, there is really no decent place to store them, aside from shoving them awkwardly in the manual. Unlike TG16 boxes, which *at least* look good on the shelf, they don't really add extra art, or anything of interesting value to a game. Its a friggin' piece of paper with the game name and manufacturer on it. Honestly, I prefer my games come with pre-lost spine cards. Getting a spine card in a game is like getting an ugly sweater from Grandma at Christmas, you can't throw it away, but you hate keeping it.

Same as you here. If there's ever been a more useless addition to a game, it's a spine card.

A spine card can be (but for PCE, it rarely if ever occurred) an opportunity to add something neat/kool.

So, in principal, it's not a bad thing (quite the opposite--I **love** the idea of getting UPC code off the actual product...but, then again, I care too much about the aesthetics of pop culture media products).

Due to a heavy dose of jet lag induced insomnia, I've started to explore the Kowloon area of Hong Kong as well as Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei "The World's Greatest Electronics Market" late at night on a recent trip to China.

I realised that the unfamiliar place, time of day, the carpark rooftop I found accidentally and misusing Lightroom to create improbable isometric perspectives all help together to create a slightly alien and uncanny atmosphere that reminds me of early 1990's cyberpunk games + films like Syndicate or Blade Runner, which led to developing the aesthetic for this series.

Haha, so someone really cares to see this.
But as I warned you already, apart from the references, the series wasn't very good. So, just watch-it-for-the-references and nothing else! 

I may hide myself in case you eventually find this unbearable and want to beat me up. 

Edit:

* The dad comes home (hops out of Jeep!) and immediately helps his son who is playing some unknown game on a video game system (I am hoping I might recognize the controller when I zoom in and examine it....but it could be anything).

From the photo, the console on the table seems to be a Famicom, but it's a bit hard to tell from the photo(mainly due to the reflection, and the controller was right obscured by the reflection so nothing could be said for it). I think it would be much better when there are proper screen caps.

(1) The first episode was hilarious! My daughter and I were totally entertained by this show, whilst I took notes (times). The first episode alone was worth the price of admission.

(2) Famicom! The distinct "cradle" for the controllers to rest in... I didn't even see that.

(3) WANT LIST: I want the THEME SONG translated into English.

THE STORY THUS FAR: I only had a few minutes this morning to play it on my TV (my laptop wasn't playing the disc, despite being Region 9), but I'll have proper screenshots once I play around with my old laptop (it's nice to revive it once again, with its now-archaic built-in disc drive).

DAT PSG, tho....The opening scene features our hero driving a Jeep as PCE PSG is playing! (I'll get an audio/video rip later so we can identify it)

Quick, random observations (I'm on my phone):
* the lobby and office interiors feature, amongst other things, HUDSON artwork.
* I think I see a framed COBRA poster! (The pic w/ Mr. Bowtie)
* it's blurry, but you can see framed BONK art sandwiched between two men (it's clearer in full motion, I'm hoping a still on my computer will be less blurry)
* There is some RPG (?) game running on the multiple television monitors in the "office".... (see Mr. Bowtie)
* ....you know how movies use generic "office soundscape" of ringing phones and shuffling and keyboard clicking? Well, in the scene here (our first visit to office), the office background soundscape =  random, generic "video game beeps and boops" (not sure if we could determine a specific game, if it is indeed sourced from a specific game)
* Our hero Young Urban Professional has a BEEPER (which was somewhat of a status symbol, depending on your job, of course).
* The dad comes home (hops out of Jeep!) and immediately helps his son who is playing some unknown game on a video game system (I am hoping I might recognize the controller when I zoom in and examine it....but it could be anything).

I was looking at the Aug/Sep 1991 Turboplay magazine and on the Summer CES 1991 article it mentions the Nec Interactive Display Add-on for the Turbografx.  Even mentions that NEC had a demo on their booth.  Is there any info on what was this addon?

Beat Rock On.  It's not as bad of a game as I initially thought.  Though the cave stage was quite annoying since I died a lot there.

It's a generic shootemup, inspired partly by R-Type (amongst others), but, as you said, it really isn't a horrible game.

I think most folks play it for 20 seconds and then turn it off.
