'spenoza, go to www.sega-16.com and talk about it on their forums (you can't make a new thread until you have made 10 regular posts, but there are existing threads dealing with Genesis models and as well as audio).

Here are some pics I took from emulators:

SNES - 108 colors

NEC TurboGrafx-16 Entertainment Supersystem - 77 colors (slight cropping due to Magic Engine's "DEMO VERSION" bar)

Alright, here it is.  And yes, this is for a PC Engine game.  DON'T LET YOUR BROWSER SHRINK-TO-FIT THIS IMAGE!

I was able to do a Dragon Punch and a fireball, and I think in order to do them you must go through the motions much slower than you're normally used to doing, but it is still very hard.  The Hurricane Kick is in there as well, but it is a reverse fireball command instead of the left-right-left-right SF2 command.

Here is my review of the arcade game that I wrote quite awhile ago, reposted from MagicBox:

Street Fighter
1/10
Arcade

IMG
OMG it's STREET FIGHTER 1!!!
Notice nobody is playing the
game in this picture.

Here it is, the game that started it all in 1987!  It must be an amazing game to warrant so many sequels and spin-offs.  In fact, how can it NOT be outstanding?  Let's put a quarter in and play this incredible game.  Ah OK.  Press Start.  Select my country (I choose USA because I am a patriot and not a traitor).  OK.  I guess I am Ryu.  Round 1.  Oh.... my.  What happened?  Am I actually playing or is this just the demo?  Oh wait I am actually playing!  Well... not anymore.

IMG
This game takes place back when Ryu and Ken were
complete stoners, so their moves are very slow.

Graphics: 4/10
Compared to all of it's sequels, Street Fighter really doesn't hold a candle.  It has two layers of scrolling, floaty sprites, good color, no line scrolls (floor "warping") and that's about it.  The backgrounds do look nice and that's why I give the graphics as much as I do.  Capcom usually does very well with that aspect in the arcades.  But the sprites are unacceptable!  Ryu is now a red-head.  In fact I think I'm playing as Adol from the Y's series instead of Ryu.  Except Adol is a hell of a lot easier to control than Ryu is in this game.  The animation is horrible.  Complete choppiness.  When you jump, the sprites just kind of float slowly.  It's bad.  Oh yeah, there are some familiar characters in this game, like Birdie.  We all remember Birdie from the Alpha series, right?  Well Birdie must be the ultimate "wigger" because in this game he is actually white.  He has "Reverse Michael Jackson Disease" I guess.

IMG
It's M.Bison, known here as "Mike". Apparently Ryu
bumped his knee and now he's hopping around in pain.
I did the same thing after kneeing the arcade for
being so damn cheap and frustrating!

Sound: 4/10
The sound is worse than the graphics, by far.  The music is screechy and abrasive sounding.  The actual composition of the music is good, but the sound quality used just destroys it.  So why did I rate the sound the same as the graphics if the sound is so bad?  Because it is also absolutely HILARIOUS!  Every single character in the game has the same exact voice which sounds like a drunk Japanese guy trying to speak English with a mouthful of Play-Doh?... yes even Mike who just happens to be black.  Every character has a witty line that they speak when they win.  With Mike it's "I'm strong!".  When Retsu wins he tells you to "Go to heaven!".  So polite.  If you win, each character will say to you the same exact high-quality phrase in the same exact high-quality voice each time.  Can you understand what is being said?  Fortunately this phrase also exists in text-form in the game, but I'll let those of you who haven't played the game try and guess!  I don't know where they found this guy.

IMG
This stage looks cool.  However it plays
like ass just like all the other stages.

Gameplay: 1/10
This is a Street Fighter game? Daaaaaamn!  Well let's see... it weighs in at 40 megabits.  You can play as Ryu or Ken.  That's it.  You both have the same exact moves.  You can do your favorite moves like the Hurricane Kick, Dragon Punch, or Fireball.  Good luck trying to do those moves at critical moments, though.  Control is EXTREMELY unresponsive to say the least.  It doesn't help that the characters are floaty and only about 5 hits are required to win (or lose).  You start out by selecting a country, and you have to defeat the two dudes there.  Once you beat all 8 characters from all 4 countries, Thailand opens up and you have to then deal with Adon and final boss Sagat.  Both will piss you off tremendously with their super cheap gameplay.  To be honest, it is easier (and definitely more fun) to see how many papercuts you can give yourself all over your body than to play this "game".  It is worth a quarter just to say that you've played the elusive "Street Fighter 1" and to laugh at how bad it is, but beyond that it is sheer torture.

IMG
Ryu is a redhead and I don't know what
Ken did to piss off his barber so much.

The only home conversion
This game only has one version for home consoles thankfully, and it's called "Fighting Street" (for the same reason the Gamecube is called "GCN"...  stupidity) and it exists only for the TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM system.  Not only that, but Fighting Street was the first CD game released in the USA for a home video game system EVER!  Capcom decided it would be best to put it on the system where the game would be least likely to sell since they were so ashamed of it.  The conversion of the arcade is actually quite good.  The graphics are a bit worse and it lost the second layer of scrolling.  The sprites are all pretty close and the game is still just as fun testicle surgery.  Even the voices are just as ridiculous.  However the music is now CD quality and nearly worth listening to.  The gameplay has been reduced to only two buttons, but you won't care as it's like trying to control the game with a box of sand in either version.  I would rate Fighting Street the same as I rated Street Fighter here, but with a higher score for "sound".

IMG
After many tries and much patience, Ryu
is finally able to throw a fireball.

Wrap up:
I can't believe that this game generated enough revenue to warrant a sequel.  I'd rather urinate acid.
#258
Obviously you guys need more help.  Here's another shot from the same exact game:

guesspce2.png

If that doesn't give it away, I don't know what will.  You guys are lucky this is an easy thread and not a challenging one.
#259
Well since that seems to have been guessed, try this easy one:

guesspce.jpg
#260
My Turbo is hooked up via component, but I do that outside the system, I don't have component jacks on the unit itself.  The result is absolutely awesome.  But s-video is also a large improvement.  I think CrackTiger and I discussed this before and I wasn't listening very well since I don't remember all of the details, but I think s-video gets rid of the shimmering that you see in composite (like Feena's hair in the Ys title screen) and the such.  If that's the case, then s-video would be a HUGE jump over the TG-16's already above-average composite.

Ys.gif

This is a slowed down version of the Ys title screen in composite.
No shimmering at all in RGB/component and I assume s-video as well.

Great thread!  I can think of a few right off the bat:

1.
IMG
Strider - Genesis - The awesome sword slash as the lightning sparks always looked awesome, and I saw it here first.

2.
IMG
Strider - Arcade - Same thing at the arcade.  I've only ever seen Strider in the arcade once.

3.
IMG
Katamary Damacy - PS2 - This crazy panda admires his own ejaculation puddle as a GIANT MARIJUANA LEAF hovers above him!  This game is MESSED UP!

4, 5, and 6.
IMG
Phantasy Star - Sega Master System - The awesome smooth 3D dungeons blew me away.  Better animation than most 16-bit 3D dungeons!

IMG

IMG
The graphics were just too good for an 8-bit game.  They almost looked like paintings to me at the time.  This game made a HUGE impression on me.

More to come later.

I used to have a job as a game tester and one of the games was a PC military simulator designed to train soldiers over yonder in that Iraq place.  It was designed to keep them on the look out for IEDs and whatnot.  It had nothing to do with Atari.  I truly hated that job.  Here are two screenshots I swiped and e-mailed to myself (a big no-no) of that game:

I took them mostly with an old crappy Epson digital camera.  Each 3D picture requires two pictures to be taken, one for each eyeball.  I recently got a newer Canon camera... not as nice as yours, but still much better than the Epson and able to do RAW photos.  One night as it snowed I took the following picture of my back yard by setting the camera on my windowsill while I was still inside, and then I just slid it to the right to take the same picture for that eyeball.  I left the shutter open for about 6 seconds or so to get it this bright since it was at 3:00 am.

Corpse Killer is probably the best looking FMV game on the 32X CD.  Unfortunately I don't have the regular non-32X version so I can't do comparisons.  But here are two others:

NIGHT TRAP:
IMG
The Sega CD version uses between 40-50 colors onscreen for the entire game.  The 32X version runs at around 300 colors onscreen.
Not the best looking 32X CD game, that's for sure.

FAHRENHEIT:
IMG
The video is much larger and the Sega CD version puts between 30-40 colors onscreen at a time.
The 32X version puts over 400.
#272
Quote from: TurboXraythe SegaCD was limited to one 16 color palette for *all* the scaling/rotation and was limited to 30fps at best (small window) and much less FPS for full screen window(scaling/rotation).
The huge purple scaling ship in stage 1 (that you fly into) of Soul Star has at least 24 colors on it, and that is not counting the other objects onscreen that are also scaling that have different colors that are not on the giant ship.  I don't mean to sound smug, but that kind of throws your 16-color limit for ALL the scaling and rotation out the window.

SOULSTAR003.png

I cropped everything that wasn't this ship out of the screen, including the player ship (black box in the image), even though the player ship happens to scale.  That leaves us with 23 colors for the purple ship alone, and the entire ship isn't even on the screen.

The Apple IIe was great!  We used it in high school.  No mouse or anything.  I remember drawing stuff line by line with commands such as HPLOT 24,62 to 29,47 and stuff like that.  In fact, that's how I did the two drawings below (which I did in high school right before the Genesis was released).  I printed them out on the awesome dot-matrix printer which had sprockets on the paper itself which you could peel off.

IMG
IMG

If I did these drawings in today's high schools, I'd be arrested for sure since these drawings dictate that I'd be the next candidate who'd likely shoot up the school.  They'd also claim I was racist.  I love political correctness, as you can see!

If you come across DVDs with unskippable menus or previews where pressing the "menu" button doesn't work, try this:

Press the "Chapter Forward Skip" button, or IMG

If that fails, try fast forwarding normally to make it quicker.

A lot of times this works, but it doesn't with Paramount DVDs.  It can also help you skip animated menu intros and outros. Usually when I see the menu pop up and start showing scenes from the movie which I have not yet viewed (I hate that) I just press "Menu" and it goes right to the real menu where I can make my selections.  After I press play I skip the outro with the IMG button.

OK here's my choices based on the systems I have:

Cool looking carts:
IMG
From top to bottom, left to right:
Sega 32X - Much cooler looking than standard Genesis carts with neat little rivets and other fun things.
Sega Master System Card - Cards are just awesome looking.
Sega Master System Cartridge - Clean and simple.  Red and black color scheme = awesome.  I love it!
TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine HuCard - A more refined version of the Sega card.  Just too cool!
Sega Mega Drive Japanese Standard - I always liked the design of these.
Sega Saturn Official Cartridges - Awesome looking carts for Backup saves, extra RAM, King of Fighters '95 and Ultraman.
Sega Mega Drive Japanese Sunsoft - A few different Sunsoft MD games have this cart.  I even like it much better than the standard Mega Drive cart!  Very tough plastic and simply awesome looking.

Lackluster looking carts:
IMG
From top to bottom, left to right:
Sega Genesis Electronic Arts Cartridges - These look stupid.  What's the yellow tab for ?  Looks unlicensed and cheap.
Virtual Boy - Flat, square and boring.  Just like my face.
Neo Geo Pocket Color - A little more boring than GameBoy Advance carts... enough to make this list.
Super Nintendo Lockless Cartridges - I fail to understand why Nintendo changed the design of the carts so that they could now be pulled out with the power on.  It is a close call between this and the regular SNES carts that lock, but this one edges the others out.
NES Tengen Cartridges - Black doesn't suit the system, and these carts are much harder to remove from the system than regular NES carts due to the lack of a notch to grab onto when pulling.
Honorable mentions: (I have these, but forgot to pull them out to include in the pic)
Sega Genesis Virtua Racing - Looks retarded due to giant SVP chip.
Sega Genesis Sonic & Knuckles Cartridge - Looks like it was designed by someone with Down Syndrome™.

There are many types of carts which I don't have which could fit here, like most unauthorized NES 3rd party carts, Accolade Genesis carts, most Saturn 3rd party carts, most pre-NES game system carts, etc.

Carts that fall in neither the "Cool" or the "Lackluster" categories are:
Sega Genesis standard
Neo Geo AES
Nintendo 64
Nintendo Entertainment System
GameBoy Advance
Nintendo DS
etc etc etc

I hate replying to myself, but I want to post these anyway.  It's from Midnight Resistance on the Genesis and the red text is an excellent example of different video signals.  I made sure that these images never went through any sort of compression from the lens to your eyeballs... though I hear Internet Explorer hates PNG files and treats them wrong.  But who uses IE anymore ?

Quoteeach frame's 240 lines are simply sent as a 480i field, which is 240 lines of actual information
Very true, but it looks much worse when it is displayed as 480i instead of 240p.

QuoteYou have the RGB signal transcoded to YPbPr component, right ?  What transcoder do you use ?  What's the model of your TV ?
This one:
scart1.jpg
(Note that I added audio to it)

The TV that I use for SD games is a Toshiba 20"... I forget the exact model and am too lazy to walk downstairs and look.  But it's actually made by Sansui or something like that and they also make Panasonic's in the same size range, and they'll give you the same picture.  The reds are incredibly good and there are no vertical stripes in dithered screens (like some stuff from Ys on the SMS) like there are on the Sony TVs I tried (and took back).

QuoteWhich one ?
I believe that both Space Harrier and SDI do this.  Maybe Quartet but I'm not sure... I'd have to power it up and check.

QuoteYes, RGB and component cables will give you slightly better color quality than S-Video...
Depends.  To a discerning eye, it is quite the improvement.  But the reason s-video seems so much better is simply because composite sucks so bad.  In Midnight Resistance for the Genesis, the text on the item/weapon containers between rounds is much more readable on component than it is in s-video, which itself is a hell of a lot more readable than composite.  I can take new comparison pictures of that part if you like.
#287

#291
I think it's funny how some people say RF/Composite/S-video is OK but not RGB.  Personally I'd put S-video closer to RGB than to Composite.  It is much cleaner, and you only get a little bit of color bleed (usually in the reds).  With my Saturn and SNES it can be pretty difficult to tell the difference between S-video and RGB unless you know exactly what to look for (the hearts in Castlevania IV no longer smear, etc).

Also, I wanted to point out that dithering is not bad.  It can be used when the "magic" of composite isn't even in the equation, like DS games.  Look at this picture I took of "Phoenix Wright 2: Phoenix Touches the Judge Inappropriately":

phoenix.jpg

As you can see, there is plenty of dithering that can be seen by the naked eye with no composite to perform its magic or sorcery to blend it into a new color.  It's simply part of the artwork.  That's not a bad thing.  Same goes with ancient systems that time has long forgotten like the TurboGrafx-16.
#292
Capturing 2 fields in fun!  I can't make the GIF animate as fast as it does on a TV screen in real life, but the picture below shows the shimmering effect that quite a lot of Turbo games have in composite.  NES games, too.  They must use a similar composite encoder (and sound chip).

Ys.gif

CrackTiger, does anything like this happen on your system with S-video ?
#293
My SCART RGB to component (YUV) transcoder is made by CYP.  I had to import it from Australia and it was close to $95 or so.  it works great and I use it for all of my "classic" systems.  Totally worth it unless you plan on using it for only one system.

scart1.jpg

It does need a slight mod for sound, though, as it doesn't support sound at all.  It is very simple, just attach the RCA sound cables to the SCART pins inside.

scart3.jpg
scart2.jpg
#294
I've purchased a few SCART cables from Chaoticjelly on eBay and they've always worked well.  I added an amp and put a DIN-8 socket (from an old TurboTap) into the interface unit of my TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM.  I then removed the resistors from an old Mega Drive 1 SCART cable, made the audio cable fit into regular RCA plugs and there I go.  Since I am in the US, I transcode the RGB into component video.  Looks phuggin' great!

Turbo1.jpg

And, of course, a shot of my TV screen.
sf2turbo.jpg

Note that I do NOT stretch 4:3 images to 16:9, since that is evil.  Of course this TV isn't 16:9 anyway, so that helps.  :)

I agree, Space Harrier is a true gem in almost any form.

Well I played the TG-16 version again and I think the control is a bit twitchy compared to the Saturn and 32X versions which are the ones I usually play (since they're pretty much 100% arcade perfect).  It's funny that there is even a true debate over the SMS vs the TG-16 version... there shouldn't be.  But yeah, the SMS version is a lot slower.

Here's a fun comparison I did.  I took each picture from my TV with my digital camera just for fun, trying to capture each in a similar state:

I've figured out your problem!!!!!  I can't believe nobody caught this before!!!

The Genesis is a high definition video game system like the Xbox360 or the PlayStation 3... perhaps even a bit more powerful than those two combined.  It is much too powerful for your capture card, which is only wimpy standard definition.   Don't try to capture the Genesis' amazing HD graphics with a non-HD graphics card.

IMG

See that ?  "High Definition Graphics".
They wouldn't have put that there
if it weren't 100% true.
